Cultural Characteristics

* KOREAN LANGUAGE, HAN’GUL. MOST SPEAK ENGLISH AS WELL
-COMMUNICATION( STAND CLOSE WHEN TALKING/APPRECIATE SILENCE
--SMALL TALK CONSIDERED INSINCERE, TOUCHING AMONG FRIENDS NON- SEXUAL
--HUGGING AND KISSING UNCOMMON WITH PARENTS. CHILDREN, RELATIVES
Cultural Characteristics
• Respect for elders, whether right or wrong
• Children are expected to care for parents in
old age
• Age, gender, social status determines making
eye contact( do not look elders in the eye)
• Feelings not expressed in facial expressions
• Traditional Koreans focus on the past and
ancestry.
Cultural Characteristics
*Yearly during the Harvest Moon,
chusok(respect) is paid to ancestors by
bringing fruits, dry, fish and rice wine to
gravesites
*Two important family holidays that are
celebrated with feasts include the 60th
and 70th birthday
•The traditional Korean family is based on
the male family line. Males head the family
•Religion is usually Buddhist or Christian..
Temples and churches are social and
educational centers. They provide housing
to Korean visitors and students when
visiting the U.S.
Korean Health Values and Beliefs
Elders prefer Hanbang or Hanyak( “oriental medicine”) to Western medicine. Practioners
are called Hanui.( acupuncture,herbs,moxibustion,cupping)
Illness-interrupted flow of life(Ki)
*lack of daily patterns from physical exertion(arthritis, HTN,pain)
*lack of control of food intake (diabetes, syncope)
*lack of blood/”drying blood”(neuralgia,cramps)
*coldness, dampness, wind/Pung( internal cause of neuralgia, indigestion, abd. Pain
Spriritual causes of illness.
Health Promotion
*Prefer natural/organics(diet, raw or natural foods, walking around home, local park
*Exercise ranked lowest in priority
*Traditional medicine for prevention of disease (fomentation bath/sauna)
*Herbal medicine uses with western biomedicine ( ginsing, seaweed soup, and haigefen
or clamshell powder)
Korean Response to Illness and Disease
• Stoic, slow to respond to pain
• Other express their even smallest pain
• Do not usually offer organs for donation/transplantation(
attitude of purity and integrity)
• There is a stigma of mental illness( Hwa-Byung, occurs from
suppression of anger)
• Mental illness or emotional disregulation expressed physically
as headaches, anorexia, insomnia, asthenia
• Prefer health-care providers who speak Korean(or bilingual)
• Women prefer female health care providers(Pap smear,
mammograms, breast examinations)

Factors that Affect Response to Illness
*Religion(Buddhist/Confucian/Christian)
*Age/Gender ( born in Korea or U.S.)
*Socioeconomic/Educational level reached
*Nutrition(i.e most Korean-Americans are at a high risk for
calcium deficiencies due to lactose intolerance
*Korea continues to manufacture and use asbestos products
*Smoking by women in public is taboo;may smoke at home
*Korean men consume alcohol at a high rate
Jamaican Cultural Background
Cultural Characteristics
• Hx. of slavery and resistance-developed independent spirits
• Known to be hard workers-strong respect for education
• Acknowledgement of presence important-greeting begin with
“Miss”, “Mrs” or “Mr”. (less formal..preceded first name only)
• Strong sense of family duty and responsibility
• Extended traditional family living in one household or nearby
• Contemporary families are nuclear( single mothers)
• Kinship bonds help raise children
• Matriarchal( woman is primary financial provider)
• Oldest child keeps family intact/oldest male surrogate father
• Diet-Carbohydrates (Jamaican American consume more meat)
• Religion integral to all aspects of life(school, social, etc)
Health Values and Beliefs/Response to Illness
• Health is absence or presence of illness
• Illness as punishment for wrongdoings or sin (passed on to
next generation)
• Higher educational or socioeconomic class view natural
causes as the cause of illness( mistake from medical
professional or body’s failure to self-heal)
• Obeah(Guzu)- belief that supernatural forces cause
good/evil/sickness/health/death (unexplained/incurable
illness the result of Obeah
• This prompts the use of rituals,herbs, baths, oils, recitation of
biblical scriptures( may seek equivalent practice in other
culture)
• Self-medicate-ex. Bush tea,hot peppers, papaya juice
Positive Nursing Strategies
*Assign Korean –American nurses to perform
assessment and initial care
*Make them feel comfortable, explain to
patients new to the system how primary care
teams and its members and how to get
referrals
*Ask client, “What do you call your
problem?What do you think caused the
problems? And Have you taken any herbal
medicines for it? How is your life going
lately?”
*Consider supplements of herbal or
traditional medicine with western care, assess
if beneficial, consider Rx interactions, inform
PCP.
*Consider a request for client to meet with
social worker (in language of preference)
*When administering medicine, explain that
doses are specific to weight. Teach need to
take full dose. Consult pharmacy to see if any
*Understand personal space
*Understand norms of eye
contact
*Understand norms of modesty

Positive Nursing Strategies *Assign Korean –American nurses to perform assessment and initial care *Make them feel comfortable, explain to patients new to the system how primary care teams and its members and how to get referrals *Ask client, “What do you call your problem?What do you think caused the problems? And Have you taken any herbal medicines for it? How is your life going lately?” *Consider supplements of herbal or traditional medicine with western care, assess if beneficial, consider Rx interactions, inform PCP. *Consider a request for client to meet with social worker (in language of preference) *When administering medicine, explain that doses are specific to weight.
