Kiran Desai was born in 1971 in Chandigarh, India and spent her early years in Pune and Mumbai. She is the daughter of renowned author Anita Desai. Desai studied in India and later moved to England and the United States to continue her education. Her first novel "Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard" was published in 1998 and received praise from Salman Rushdie. Her second novel "The Inheritance of Loss" won the 2006 Man Booker Prize and National Book Critics Circle Fiction Award.
