Someone Was Movin Into Mrs. Dirk s Old House
Someone was movin into Mrs. Dirk s old house, she had died many years back. She used to rock in
her rocking chair on the porch. I remember she was a kind, old widow. Me and Hattie used to play in
her old costumes: her hats, jewelry, and her dance shoes. She d tell us stories of when she was in the
Harlem Renaissance, she would show us pictures. She was beautiful. She was eighty nine when she
died. Now someone was movin into her old house. We watched the big, green truck drive up the dirt
road and up the hill where Mrs. Dirk s house sat. Me and Hattie watched behind the old wooden fence.
I hope they got a girl my age, said Hattie. I wished the same thing and I know why. Hattie and I have

The man took a box out of the truck and marched into the house. A lady came around the truck to the
back and pulled out a box . She was tall and thin. She wore ripped jeans and a long sleeve, yellow
shirt. It was cut at the bottom in little strips. She wore a vest that was cut into little strips as well. She
had long, blonde hair with a headband around it. She had long earrings and she wore sandals. She
looked the same age as the man. She took the box into the house and a girl followed with a box. The
girl was tall, definitely taller than me and skinny. She wore very short shorts, they were light blue. She
wore a short sleeve tie die shirt that was cut into little strips at the bottom. She wore long earrings and
dozens of bracelets. She had long, red, curly hair that was thick and wild. They continued to unload
their truck. White folks movin into Mrs. Dirk s house. I guess there s nothing wrong with it, they got
as much right to live here as we got as much right to live anywhere else. I wondered if that girl would
want to play with me and Hattie. Hattie started to run toward her house. Hattie, wait up! I ran after her.
We stopped under the big oak tree. I thought we was gonna to say hello to them, I asked Hattie. I ain t

Globalization And Localization
Globalization, like most phenomenon, is controversial. It is defined as the increasing cross border flow
of goods, services, money, people, information, and culture (as cited in Ariely, 2011). Though, it has
been around for many years, the extent at which it impacts economies, international relationships, and
everyday life has become more profound than ever before. Due to its controversial nature, there have
been many critiques of its process. Postcolonial critics have argued that it is merely the latest stage in
a long history of oppression and exploitation by Western nations, and that the idea of global
citizenship is just another way for the West to impose its values on the rest of the world. This is not the
first claim to be made against globalization, with many others throwing around claims of
Americanization , and global erasing the local . This is due to the lack of understanding of
globalization as not just a historical process, but also a conceptual change in which people are aware
of world as a single place, ... [with] an important effect on various types of social identities around the
world (as cited in Ariely, 2011). However, this process does not seek to eliminate local, social, or
national identities. Globalization and localization are inseparably linked (as cited in Sobol, 2016). It
creates a symbiotic relationship between the global and the local, where they complement and aid
each other. The process of globalization is not the latest stage of oppression by Western countries, but
rather the global integration [that] hastens the worldwide convergence of cultures (as cited in Sobol,
2016). Globalization is a phenomenon that benefits our world, as it is responsible for the integration of
cultures, the rise in economies, and aids in international relationships. Globalization stimulates the
integration of cultures as it opposes nationalism and xenophobic attitudes towards immigrants.
Nationalism is defined as a sense that one s country is superior to other nations (as cited in Ariely,
2011). Nationalism along with constructive patriotism which reflects an attachment to country
characterized by critical loyalty are two aspects of national identity tied in with postcolonial
perspectives

The Economic Disaster Of Detroit
Detroit, Michigan once stood as the epitome of industrial American cities. In the mid 1990s Detroit
had the highest income per capita and a booming automotive industry. During prohibition in the 1920s
Detroit served as a major gateway for the importation of alcohol from Canada, whereby it thrived
from this lucrative business. Also, around this same time the automotive industry was growing at a
pace where jobs were begging to be filled, and the population of Detroit rose to nearly 2,000,000.
There was a point in time where many other major U.S. cities envied Detroit and were jealous of its
ever growing economy and infrastructure. At this time it seemed as though nothing would stop the
economic growth of the Motor City. Sadly, these are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main causes of this economic collapse are the loss of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the state
of Michigan due to globalization, the subtle racism of residents leading to the suburbanization of the
Detroit area, and a group of crooked municipal government leaders that stole from the community.
Despite these overwhelming obstacles Detroit is on the mend, and many see a bright future for this
once great city.
It is however, important to note that everybody have a weakness, and the same remains true when
referring to a cities infrastructure. The most astounding reason for the quick decline of Detroit was the
closure of many automotive factories and the deterioration of the American auto industry. Detroit was
a city with everything going for it. Its quick economic growth in the early 20th century had a lot to do
with its geographical location. It was located close to the nations major coal and iron distributors and
it was easily accessible by water via the Detroit River. Edmund Wilson wrote in a critique of Detroit,
You can see here, as it is impossible to do in a more varied and complex city, the whole structure of an
industrial society. Wilson elegantly notes that Detroit depends entirely on the automotive industry as
its source of sustainability where other cities have a more diversified industrial scene. At the
beginning of the 20th century Detroit s auto industry began. Henry Ford opened the Ford Motor
company in 1903 and

Villains of All Nations
The Villains of All Nations is book written by Marcus Rediker that follows the origins of the pirate
boom before and after the War of Spanish Succession. The book covers infamous pirates like
Bartholomew Roberts, William Fly, and Edward Teach also known as Blackbeard. It discusses the grim
environment of working the seas for the government, what lead many people to turn to piracy, the tale
of the first women pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, how piracy impacted slavery, the pirates
bonds of brotherhood under the Jolly Roger, and the events that lead to the death of the pirate era
itself. Many times the writing style of the book at time felt distracting, confusing, and even frustrating.

The brand of justice pirates toward vessels they captured was something I found fascinating. For

Snelgraves and is taken by the pirates. Certain that Snelgrave will be killed or beaten for resisting,

Because of the degree of respect Snelgraves had, Cocklyn not often seeing a government captain
holding such admiration from a crew offered him a new ship and profits from a captured slave ship for
his return to England. This story really caught my attention because of the level of hospitality pirates
show to a captain who held such respect with his own crew. Putting myself in the the position of a
sailor back in that time I can see why many were attracted to the life of a pirate. The life of a sea
faring man during the early 18th century was a grueling way of work. Wages were low, decease was
rampant, ships were cramped, and discipline from officers was brutal, sometime murderous. The
pirate life symbolized freedom and liberty and a brotherhood that stood for being one for

queers were known as Gay in the West. Later it began to be used in the manner we note these days to

basic reason is a question about the structure based theory of identity, held by postmodernist and on
entering it into the sexual socio sexual literature of queer.
Another reason may be considered that LGBT is the first took ownership of this social movement. As
LGBT foundations, ACT UP and Queer Nation which is founded in March 1990 took an important
step in order to assess queer in LGBT movement. The member of these two foundations adopted the
word of Queer consciously and strategically, and they consciously embraced the opposite face of the

The infants LOS and DOT that were weaned off Methadone without a standardized treatment protocol
will be compared to those in the LOS and DOT of infants that received the standardized weaning
treatment protocol. The problem was discovered by Ashley Kilpatrick, NNP, Project Manager of this
process improvement initiative. Ashley saw the opportunity to improve patient care by standardizing
the care of the infants by decreasing the variation in care. I was made aware of the problem in weekly
discharge rounds that occur every Tuesday in RNICU/CCN with the nurse managers, assistant nurse
managers, social services, utilization management, UAB Police and the discharge coordinator to talk
about any financial or social barriers to discharge. During discharge rounds, we discussed infants
whose mother was addicted to drugs, whether prescription, illegal, or opioid substitutions. We also
discuss whether the infants are having withdrawals and receiving Methadone. There would always be
questions about weaning the Methadone, what day of weaning were the infants on so they could be
discharged. There would be questions whether we were monitoring 3 5 7 days off Methadone to send
the infant home. This could ultimately be a safety and quality issue for the organization. This project
will focus on using Methadone as a pharmacological treatment strategy as well as the normal non
pharmacological treatment strategies to

Competition between Emerging Market and Multinational Firms: Wal Mart and Mexican Retailers
Dante Di Gregorio, Douglas E Thomas, Fernán González de Castilla. International Journal of

Abstract (Summary)
We analyze how competitive dynamics within the Mexican retail sector have shifted following the
entrance and ascendance of Wal Mart, and how Mexican retailers have responded individually and
collectively to Wal Mart s dominance. We discuss implications for strategic management and
international business research as well as for managers of emerging market firms that face dominant
foreign competitors. Within fifteen years of entering Mexico, Wal Mart has become the dominant ...

To analyze these competitive interactions, we draw on the competitive dynamics stream of research
within strategic management (e.g., Grimm Smith, 1997; Smith, Ferrier Ndofor, 2001; Ketchen, Snow
Hoover, 2004). We show how competitive dynamics have evolved in the Mexican retail industry
following the entrance and dominance of Wal Mart. We conclude with a discussion of the implications
for both theory and practice.
1. Competitive Dynamics between Dominant Multinationals and Emerging Market Firms
Emerging economies are generally characterized by a rapid pace of economic growth, increasing
liberalization of trade and investment regimes, and economic restructuring (Hoskisson et al, 2000).
Mexico, for instance, maintained high trade barriers and imposed strict limitations on foreign
investment through the mid 1980s. From the point at which Mexico joined the General Agreement on
Tariffs and Trade in 1986 through the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement
with Canada and the United States in 1994 and a broad range of similar agreements with other
countries, Mexican firms became increasingly exposed to competitive pressures from foreign firms in
the form of imported products as well as foreign owned operations in Mexico. In this respect, the
Mexican experience is similar to that of emerging economies throughout Latin America (which also
moved away from import substitution industrialization toward a more

Rhetorical Analysis Of LGBT Discrimination And The Advocates
Losing rights for being one s self
Even though fellow Americans use the constitution as an excuse to discriminate against LGBT
peoples and women because of their freedom of speech, the civil rights act should protect all LGBT
communities and women. John Oliver s LGBT Discrimination and The Advocates The Equality Act is
Necessary demonstrates that all Americans should be treated as equals and not discriminated against
because of Color, Race, Sex, or National Origin.
Have you ever thought that progress would move backwards? Even though the gay rights movement is
gaining back the respect and rights of gay people, it should go even further than that. It should include
all peoples of the LGBT community. The movement started in the mid 1960 s and is still continuing
today, but very gradually. John Oliver s LGBT ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Synovus Servant Leadership
Synovus Financial Corporation is known for taking care of their people, both employees and
customers, an idea that began with the company s original leadership and has been passed down for
generations. The culture of Synovus and doing the right thing extends into every aspect, both inward
and outward, of the organization and everyone they come into contact with, making everyone aware
that they are performing meaningful work and working for a higher purpose (Hess Cameron, 2006.)
These values, modeled throughout the organization are said to be contagious, as employees are valued
for themselves and not the values they bring in (Hess Cameron, 2006.) Organizations that are built and
operate with a sense of purpose, truly motivating their employees (Birkinshaw, Foss, Lindenberg,

leadership takes this approach, many decisions become more obvious, and to an extent easier to make.
While leadership sets these goals or standards that may seem unreasonable to others, once they are
established, they become not just the standard way of operating, but for many the standard way of
living. These servant leaders also demonstrate that they put their followers first, organizations second,
and themselves last in their careers (Sendjaya et al.

Allusions In Frankenstein
All literature has an underlying message of a constant battle between the forces of good and the forces
of evil. Mary Shelley s Frankenstein is no different. The forces of supposed good and evil come to
clash with the persistent battle between Dr. Frankenstein and his monster. This conflict between the
two forces can be seen to represent the forces of God and Lucifer (or the Devil), as both the literary
and religious characters share a number of characteristics. Mary Shelley, in Frankenstein uses
symbolism and allusions to portray Dr. Frankenstein and the monster as God and the Devil, leading to
their constant battle between good and evil.
The historical context of the novel helps to develop the characters and their personalities.

The monster, within a few months to the day when Frankenstein ran away, becomes an articulate,
educated being who learns to speak and read French, (Watkins). The creature takes life into his own

communication and learning from a family (unbeknownst to them) led him to trust the family,
thinking that they would look past his facial features. At one point, he presents himself to the blind

and grabbing the elder blind man, looking as if he was attacking the blind man, the monster was sent
out and forced the family to leave the area. Over the course of the novel, The monster [becomes] at
once more intellectual and more emotional than his maker... the greatest paradox... is that the monster
is even more human than his creator, (Bloom). The monster gradually begins to learn about the outside
world, and the culture developed, unlike Frankenstein, who would lock himself up and only focus on
the task ahead. While the monster has good characteristics, his inability to control his rage leads to his

Abstract. The most parsimonious definition of absenteeism is the failure to report to work (Robbins,
2003). In general, absenteeism is a tendency to be away from work or school without a good reason.
Absence nowadays cannot be differentiated from the person who was called a student. This
phenomena, it is comfortable to see even likened it has become a necessity in the nature of students. It
is not surprising if this habit continues to fall proceeds among school students as examples of primary,

Active Shooter Evolution
The Evolution of Police Response to Active Shooters Whenever they occur, active shooter situations

them in the future. The U.S. Department of Justice (n.d.) defines an active shooter as, an individual
actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area (para.1). The reason we see
more active threat incidents in the news is not due to the media, but because there has been an
increasing trend of such events. A study of 160 active shooter incidents from 2000 to 2013 has shown

In the early morning hours of July 20, 2012, Holmes entered the theatre and shot 70 people, killing 12
(TriData Division, System Planning Corporation (TDSPC), 2014). Police response to this incident was
quick with 14 units on the scene within 4 minutes, 6 of them there in just over two minutes (TDSPC,

victims on the scene. One of the officers that arrived on the scene was a SWAT paramedic who
conducted triage on the victims inside the theatre itself (TDSPC, 2014). Having a police officer
conduct triage inside the theatre allowed fire and emergency medical services personnel in safe zones
conducting medical treatment likely save time and lives (TDSPC, 2014). Additionally, police cars
were used in the transport of 27 individuals to area hospitals, some of which may have died waiting on
transportation via other means (TDSPC, 2014). The Aurora Police Department actually transported
more people than ambulances, who transported 20 victims (TDSPC, 2014). Recommendations from
the TDSPC report included having more officers with small tactical medical kits, the department
training more SWAT paramedics and knowing their locations at all times should an active shooter
incident occur (2014). Aurora teaches us that police departments across

The Veil Of Oppression Essay
As a Turk, I view the veil as a symbol of oppression and male dominance; as a Spaniard, the veil is a
beautiful accessory worn by passionate female flamenco dancers to emphasize character. When I was
asked to cover myself with a burqa at the Sultanahmet Mosque in Istanbul, my home city, I sensed a
growing uneasiness as a hot blooded Spaniard in Istanbul s most respected location. Clearly displaced,
I felt as if I was insulting my Spanish family by ultimately succumbing to authority and hiding my
body. I offended the confident spirit of the flamenco dancers that I so admire. In the mosque, I felt
entirely Spanish as I came to understand my place as a knot between the Middle Eastern and Spanish
sides of my family. I see beyond dualism as I carry the layered perspectives of my cultures and

same passion and excitement so prevalent in the city is particularly absent in my Spanish family.
Rather than embracing their connection to Spain s daily vigor and movement, my family has isolated
itself within their aristocracy and is submerged in depression and distanced affection. As I refine my
relations with each country, I use my Turkish family s strength as a means to inspire my own purpose.

Holden Caulfield And Its Effects On Society
After a heated argument, rough day, or traumatizing event, many of us say we would rather be left
alone. When something negative happens to any of us we tend to isolate ourselves, leaving ourselves
to our thoughts for a while before blending back into society. This isolation is good for a while, it
allows us to clear our heads and think things through before going back into a normal routine.
Prolonged isolation however, has been proven to be potentially dangerous. Holden Caulfield isolates
himself from the phoniness of the world, thinking highly of himself and somehow believes he is
different from everyone else he s ever met. Holden s way of putting himself on a pedestal harms his
social prowess, and isolates him to the point of loneliness. He longs for social contact and in many
situations makes a strong effort in order to get to know somebody. After 5 minutes of conversation
however, Holden proves to us his social impairment. Holden Caulfield is an example of a person who
does not fit into normal social interactions, yet some of his personality exists in all of us.

Canada in the Global Economy Essay
Canada in the Global Economy
Over the past few years, Canada s economy has done comparatively well and has demonstrated some
resilience to the fluctuating global economy. However, Canada remains to be relatively less
competitive with respect to other developed countries. In this paper I will attempt to take a closer look
at Canada s position in the global economy today and examine the relevant issues.
Competition is an important driver of innovation and productivity growth. Looking at the domestic
Canadian economy, perhaps one of the most significant barriers to a strong domestic economy is the
lack of intense competition among domestic firms. There are many reasons for this. First of all, the

This is in part due to the fact that the Canadian economy fails to support the development of domestic
giants because of the reasons discussed above. As a result, value added activities, for example R D, are
not performed in Canada. The branch plant operations simply carry out non strategic and non value
added operations that do not give the county any competitive advantages or innovative drives.
Furthermore, re investment is limited in the Canadian operations because the majority of the resources
are allocated to build the companies? competitiveness, which is often done elsewhere.
Besides a relatively non competitive business environment, Canada?s labour force also lacks the
competitive mindset. Structural employment remains high, which is partly due to the existence of
social assistance and unemployment insurance systems. Work incentives are low under the protection
of the employment insurance program, which indirectly contributes in a higher than the desirable
unemployment rate. Furthermore, unions and other similar groups do not promote many incentives for
workers to stay competitive in the workplace by continuously learning and improving productivity.

Essay on Potentiometeric Titrations
Title: Potentiometric Titration
Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to construct a titration curve by titrating Formic acid using a
standardized sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and a pH meter through potentiometric titration. After the
data for the rest of the class is collected, compare and contrast the equivalence points to see how the
concentrations of the various acids affected the acids weakness and strength.
Methods:
Obtain 0.020 M of Formic Acid (HCCOOH). Calibrate the pH meter using the instructions for
calibrating the pH meter in the appendix. After the calibration of the pH meter, 150 mL of Formic acid
solution was dispensed into a clean dry beaker, and then 50 mL of the formic acid was transferred into
a 250mL beaker. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The size of (NaOH) was reduced to about 0.1 mL per intervals. A titration curve was made for 0.20 M
of Formic Acid and results were shared in class. After the data has been collected from the rest of the
class, compare and contrast the properties of various acids titrated with a strong base. Keep in mind
that that the pH of the strong acid reacted with strong base will give a pH of about 7 and a weak acid
with a strong base will give a pH higher then 7.
Data:
Table 1: Acids Studied in the Experiment
Acid Ka1 Ka2
Hydrochloric acid, HCl very large N/A
Acetic acid, CH3COOH 1.76E 5 N/A
Formic acid, HCOOH 1.77E 4 N/A
Maleic acid, HOOCCHCHCOOH 1.42E 2 8.57E 7
Acids with very large Ka values are very strong acids. Acids with very small Ka are very weak acids.
Hydrochloric acid is very strong because of its very large ka value, and the rest of the acids are weak
because of their small Ka values. Hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, and formic acid are all monoprotic.
Maleic acid is diprotic because it has two acidic protons that leave it when it reacts with a base.

Lender Liability and the Duty of Good Faith
Lender Liability and the Duty of Good Faith I. Introduction From time to time, lenders and their
attorneys announce that lender liability is no longer an issue with which the lending community needs
to be concerned. What usually prompts this proclamation of the death of lender liability is a recent
case in which a court has summarily rejected a borrower s claim that the lender violated the duty of
good faith and fair dealing. Many courts have rejected borrowers lawsuits which are based on
allegations of the violation of the lender s duty of good faith. Nevertheless, lender liability should
continue to be an area of concern to lenders. Although courts often dismiss cases based on a borrower
s claims of lender bad faith, in other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then a discussion of the objective and subjective test of good faith will take place before finally
concluding that the good faith obligation should not be imposed in debtor creditor situations to
override express terms of a contract. II. The U.C.C. A. The Good Faith Performance Obligation and
the U.C.C. The central provision of the U.C.C. s good faith requirement is found in § 1 203, which
provides that every contract or duty within this Act imposes an obligation of good faith in its
performance or enforcement. With regard to debtor creditor relationships in particular, this obligation
of good faith performance imposes on a lender a duty to deal in good faith with its borrower in all
situations, not only in situations where, because of the circumstances of the loan, the lender has
assumed actual control over and a fiduciary responsibility for the borrower. One troublesome but
important aspect of the good faith performance obligation is its application to contracts, which provide
that one party to the contract may, in its sole discretion, take certain actions pursuant to the contract. In
such cases, the actions of the party who can exercise its discretion may affect all parties to the
contract, and dependent parties must rely on the good faith of the party given the right to exercise its
discretion. Often, the discretion exercised by the party in control will adversely affect the dependent
party. However, it does not necessarily follow that

How Is Hamlet Selfish
The Bible says Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written,
Vengeance is mine, I will repay. (Romans 12:19). In modern society, most people do not think about
revenge as a bad thing, but rather as a natural part of life. Sometimes it is viewed down upon and
questioned by those with high moral standards, or when a person wants revenge so severe that it
would require blood to be shed. This was the case for Hamlet in the play Hamlet, by Shakespeare.
After finding out his father had been killed by his Uncle, who had taken over the throne of Denmark,
he is filled with anger and hatred, along with a feeling of self loathing. Throughout the course of the
play, Hamlet pretends to be a madman so he can have his way, questions death and what comes after
dying, and wonders if he should actually kill another human being. After the conflict is resolved,

During the first act of the play, after he found out his uncle, Claudis, killed his father, he was enraged.
This is demonstrated during his conversation with the ghost of his father when he says Haste me to
know t , that I, with wings as swift / As meditation or the thoughts of love / May sweep to my revenge
(1.5 31 37). By saying this, Hamlet acknowledges that he is ready to kill and is not afraid of what
follows. However, somewhere in his line of reasoning, he questions whether killing a person is
morally justified. He comes up with multiple reasons on why not to kill him, one being that the king is
praying and he wants to send him to hell, not to heaven. Eventually, his resolve hardens when he sees
Fortinbras s army march across Denmark, and makes the remark:
That, for a fantasy and trick of fame
Go to their graves like beds, fight for a plot

Impact Of The Age Of Exploration
The era known as the Age of Exploration, sometimes called the Age of Discovery, officially began in
the early 15th century and lasted through the 17th century. The period is characterized as a time when
Europeans began exploring the world by sea in search of new trading routes, wealth, and knowledge.
The impact of the Age of Exploration would permanently alter the world and transform geography
into the modern science it is today.
THE BIRTH OF THE AGE OF EXPLORATION
Many nations were looking for goods such as silver and gold, but one of the biggest reasons for
exploration was the desire to find a new route for the spice and silk trades. When the Ottoman Empire
took control of Constantinople in 1453, it blocked European access to the area, severely limiting trade.
In addition, it also blocked access to North Africa and the Red Sea, two very important trade routes to
the Far East.
The first of the journeys associated with the Age of Discovery were conducted by the Portuguese.
Although the Portuguese, Spanish, Italians and other had been plying the Mediterranean for
generations, most sailors kept well within sight of land or traveled known routes between ports. Prince
Henry the Navigator changed that, encouraging explorers to sail beyond the mapped routes and
discover new trade routes to West Africa.
Portuguese explorers discovered the Madeira Islands in 1419 and the Azores in 1427.
Over the coming decades, they would push farther south along the African coast, reaching the

Comparing A Streetcar Named Desire And The Glass Menagerie
The text from A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie, both written by the renowned
author Tennessee Williams, deal with the topics of life s pressures, and the desire to succeed in
everything we do. Oftentimes, people place unrealistic expectations upon us and set the bar higher
than we can achieve, or even want to reach. People end up developing mechanisms to deal with these
stresses and tensions that have been created (Billington 2016). We find other unhealthy habits and

Benefits Of Mobile Edge Computing In Mobile Edge Computing
Introduction:
This report will talk about Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) within the Radio Access Network (RAN).
Although not a new concept, this report will explore why MEC is relevant for network applications
and how it can be used to cope with the increasing demand of computing power from the cloud. It will
also explore the potential application scenarios and the benefits it can bring in our everyday life.
Mobile Edge Computing Background Information:
The number of smart devices connected to the internet is expected to increase significantly over the
next decade. Thus, data generated by these smart devices sent to the remote cloud will also increase
significantly. The European Commission predicts that there will be 50 to 100 billion smart ... Show

MEC is also relevant in the implementation of 5G networks. The benefits that MEC will bring into the
evolution of 5G networks are listed below:
 Compute intensive applications executed at the network edge will help optimize mobile resources
[3]
 Large data can be processed at the edge before being sent to the clouds [3]
 Context aware services, such as real time traffic updates, become available with the help of RAN
information [3]
Networks operators are motivated to maintain quality of experience and generate revenue and
therefore need to efficiently cope with the increasing mobile traffic. As mobile applications and
content migrate to the cloud, the latency of the network to access the cloud becomes a major concern.
For application and content providers to deliver more efficient, secure and low latency connections,
deployment of such applications or content at the edge of the network becomes essential [4].
According to the European Standards Institute, the market drivers of MEC are:
 Business transformation: Technology improvements and new revenue generating applications help
innovate new business strategies
 Industry collaboration: Collaboration between network operators and application and content
providers is essential for optimal access

The next case we will look at is considered by some as the greatest corporate fraud in Australian
history, Firepower. Firepower International was a company founded and run by Tim Johnston, which
offered a product called a Firepower Pill 6, which claimed to improve engine efficiency and reduce
emissions when placed into a vehicles engine. Johnston claimed that the fuel pill would eliminate all
poisonous gas emitted from vehicles5.
Tim Johnston convinced investors that he had such a product as well as convince investors that proof
of the product was not necessary5. Later, with the money he had acquired he would sponsor some of
Australia s biggest sports teams to attract more investors as well as to satisfy those still unconvinced
by the product5.
Amazingly Johnston s strategy had worked and by late 2006 reputable people were tipping him for
greatness. Many believed that Johnston was about to tackle one of the world s biggest problems the
global energy crisis. As more reputable people invested in Firepower, this further increased hype and
potential investors were eager to get on board or miss out.
Johnston also surrounded himself with very successful people such as Warren Anderson, one of the
country s best known property developers, as well as a host of others such as Steve Waugh, former
Australian cricket team captain5.

Apollo 11 Moon Landing Conspiracy
The Apollo 11 Moon Landing Conspiracy
Officially Accepted Story
During the 1960 s and 70 s, America and the USSR were in the midst of the Cold War Era, a period of
time where instead of fighting each other they competed against each other in order to be the first
nation to win the space race and that meant landing a human on the moon and have them return safely
before the other country.
In 1961 Russia was ahead of America in the space race after managing to launch Yuri Gagarin into
space, have him orbit the earth and return him safely , 23 days before American astronaut Alan B
Shepard was able too. In response to trailing behind Russia, President John F. Kennedy gave a speech
at Rice University Stadium in which he challenged America to find a way to put a man on the moon
and return him safely before the end of the decade.
After launching from the Kennedy space centre on July 20th 1969 the crew of Apollo 11 orbited the
earth one and a half times before being given permission to go to the moon, three days later the crew
are in orbit around the moon. Six hours after the lunar module lands on the moons surface, Neil
Armstrong becomes the first man to walk on the moon.

mentally impaired are immediately labeled as different. Questions on what to do with these people are
common. In literature they are seen being locked into a tower room where they are forced to live their
days peeling back the yellow wallpaper. This confines the characters to a world where it s just them
and their insanity. These characters are present in many different stories. Lewis Carroll s Alice in

Critical Analysis of a Passage from Horace Walpole s...
Horace Walpole s The Castle of Otranto, is acknowledged by many as the first gothic novel. It was the
first of it s kind and many of the conventions used by Walpole, which put it in a literary genre of it s
own, were continued by authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Lewis. Many of these defining
characteristics can be seen within the very first few pages of the text and for the purposes of this essay,
to identify some of these conventions used and the relevance of this text to modernity I shall focus this
analysis on the passage between pages twenty four and twenty six from the Oxford World s Classics
edition.

In Otranto, Walpole challenges his societies views of modernity and transgresses social laws by
introducing the theme of incest into his novel with Manfred preying of his deceased son s betrothed,
Isabella. This brings into play three defining features which became prevalent within gothic novels of
the late eighteenth century: women in distress; women being threatened by powerful males; and the
major theme of fear and in this example, specifically female fear. Isabella, a young, virginal woman
becomes half dead with fright when faced with potential rape and becoming a spoiled woman at the
hands of the powerful and threatening Manfred. Such suggestions, by Walpole s age were seen as
scandalous and caused moral outrage, a thread that was carried through the gothic genre. This new
genre may have provided for many, an escape from the rigid world of enlightenment. It brought to
them a world of imagination and allowed them to immerse themselves in a world which had been
morally forbidden and they could do it from the privacy of their own homes, allowing their
indulgence, and perhaps, immoral thoughts to go unnoticed, providing a way for the darkness and
immoral thoughts to come alive outside of the novel. At the end of the novel however, society s moral
ideals surface as Manfred retires to a convent after the realisation of his sins and order is restored. In
this way, although Walpole is exposing his readers to these ideas, he would

Taking a Look at Photosynthetic Pigments
Photosynthetic pigments
Introduction
Some animals and most plants use photosynthesis to convert light energy into chemical energy. The
energy that is created can be stored and is accessed later on by consumers. The consumers of the
organisms break bonds while digesting the plant material and the stored energy is released into their
perspective systems. The entire process of photosynthesis can be summarized as carbon dioxide and
water reacting with light to create sugar, water and oxygen. Although put deceivingly simple terms,
the process of photosynthesis energy conversion can be broken into two different reaction pathways, a
light independent reaction and a light dependent reaction. In the light independent reaction, the energy
stored by the plant as ATP and NADPH is used to fixate carbon dioxide and create sugar. Inversely,
the light dependent reactions use the absorption of light to produce ATP and high energy electrons that
are stored. The absorbing molecules found within the plant are referred to as pigments and each one
absorbs different wavelengths. For example, chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light while other
pigments absorb all other wavelengths of light that are left over. The other pigments found in plants
fall into a group called carotenoids. Within the carotenoid group, the wavelengths for violet and blue
light are absorbed. To understanding pigments in plants in relation to light, Thin Layer
Chromatography (TLC) and spectroscopy are used to test the

On January 1, 2004, over one thousand people in the mountain hamlet of Oventic, Chiapas, celebrated
the 10th anniversary of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) rebellion with song and

refusal to take money from the mal gobierno (bad government).? In addition, the Zapatistas have
created five organizational centers (caracoles) and established Juntas of Good Government in each of
them in order to ?resolve conflicts and disequilibrium between the centers and the outlying

autonomy. These Zapatista achievements can be attributed to the local terrain of Chiapas, restrictive
legislation, and local and national scrutiny.
The Mexican government has faced legal and practical restraints on launching an all out war on the
Zapatistas. The first government counter attacks encountered tactical difficulties in the jungles of
Chiapas and the army failed to score a quick military victory. In 1995, the federal congress passed a ?

areas under Zapatista control. This legislation catalyzed the signing of the San Andrés Accords by the

jungles of Chiapas, made overt military action politically and tactically unviable. The EZLN?s
national popularity and visibility also guaranteed its survival. Though the Mexican government

Motive For Murder In Hamlet
Murder often represents the revenge or hatred felt by a desperate soul attempting to fill an empty
space. Shakespeare s Hamlet Prince of Denmark is full of death, but the true purpose behind tragic
murders is buried beneath a cynical reason. King Claudius slowly unravels the details of his dirty act,
and Queen Gertrude, Hamlet, and Ophelia all have a part in the deaths that occur throughout this
eventful play. The crimes that are committed only help to destroy the pitiful existence that each of
these characters portray. The horrific murders that take place throughout Shakespeare s Hamlet
provide the motive for revenge by the characters of Claudius, Hamlet, Ophelia, Laertes and Gertrude.

Ophelia is a confusing and emotional character because her body does not match her mind;
mesmerizing on the outside but devious on the inside. Her life is constantly surrounded by men who
have either taken advantage of her beauty or people who believe she is actually going insane. King
Claudius and Hamlet are prime examples of men who continually disrespect her kind heart. Letters are
given back to Hamlet by Ophelia and this causes an intense conflict between these two artful
characters. Hamlet becomes extremely upset and states, That if you be honest and fair, your honesty
should admit no discourse to your beauty (Shakespeare 3.1. 107 108). Her destiny appears to be in a
nunnery to prevent her dreadful life from progressing to insanity, but reality snatches her first. Ophelia
s motive of revenge is brought upon several characters through a shameful crime; suicide. Her lifeless
body floats in a bed of water surrounded by flowers after the drowning occurs. Shakespeare s brilliant
imagery provides the reader with an insight of just how peaceful her death is, but it also guides the
reader towards why she killed herself in the first place. Revenge is the main reason of Ophelia s
suicide and her wishes come true after her brother, Laertes, is deeply affected. His sister has just died,
and he is desperate to prove himself worthy of living

Theory of Democratic Peace

Theory of Democratic Peace The idea of democratic peace was brought up in the enlightened era. The
theory of democratic peace was based off of Immanuel Kant s Perpetual Peace. The theory of
democratic peace argues that nation states governed by democratic regimes do not tend to have
conflicts with other countries that would lead to wars. With this theory, it shows that nation states with
a democratic rule are more likely to not go to war with other countries. In some cases, this theory has
been proven to be true, but in other cases it has not, especially with the United States. There are many
proponents and opponents for this theory. Through this essay, the theory ... Show more content on

This is a way that the theorists distort the definition of war, so it portrays democratic states as peaceful
nations, who don t go to war with each other. In fact, it s the opposite because the democratic nations
do fight each other, but based off the criteria of having a thousand deaths they never had a war with
each other. Last, the democratic nations recognizing each other as democratic nations. With this
recognition, it is used as a standard to determine whether democratic states fight each other. Without
the mutual recognition, there is no proof that democracies fight each other. In order to be recognized
as a democratic state, many of the states that claim to be democratic have to fit the liberal principles.
Opposing views of the democratic peace theory believe as times go on this theory will continued to be
distorted to fit the different circumstances that are to come in the future.
Further in this essay, three different countries with different governing styles will be used to test the
theory of democratic peace s accuracy or falseness. For the democratic rule, the country is South
Africa. Using Russia as the authoritarian rule, and China as the totalitarian rule. By using these
countries, it shows if the democratic peace theory applies to other governing styles.
Although South Africa is now a democratic rule, it did not start off with this rule.

Tigers Delight The largest tiger in the world has been measured at over ten feet long and over six

the bunch. Within just the tiger species there are nine different subspecies and three of which are
already extinct. Their differences are not as drastic in appearance like other animals, such as dogs for
example, but they still noticeable to the trained eye. All tiger subspecies are currently classified as
being endangered but there are many actions being taken to help keep the current surviving species
from going extinct. Most tigers in nature live to be ten to fifteen years old. Tigers by nature are
carnivores and are only found in nature in one continent on earth, which is Asia. Unlike most cats tiger
enjoy swimming and spend the majority of the hot summer days resting in rivers or lakes.
OneKind.org is an animal relief organization and they explain that tiger s roar can carry more than 2

subspecies of tigers and their differences, whether it be physical make up or social habits, and what
organizations are out there and what they are doing to help the endangered species, is a brilliant start

Project finance is best understood in terms of a risk allocation which reconciles the potentially
conflicting objectives of borrowers and lenders by utilizing the long term economic and commercial
linkages between the sponsors, lenders and third party participants involved with a project. (Howcroft
Fadhley, 1998).
In theory, the basic principle of risk allocation for the project finance is Allocating project risks to the
most suitable participant whose risk preference is higher (Xiao, 2003).
Severe consequences follow from the failure to accurately identify and allocate risks. These
consequences often extend beyond the immediate parties to the ... Show more content on

In this paper, an extensive literature review is undertaken to evaluate the importance of risk allocation
to project stakeholders and discuss current practices. However, the complexity of this topic is beyond
the scope of this paper. Hence, the attention is towards the direct participants, even though other
stakeholders will also be tangentially mentioned. Also, as PPP is developing fast in the area of project
finance and its importance is increasing, I have used it to illustrate some of the points made in the
current risk allocation practices.
II. Importance of risk allocation in structuring from the angle of stakeholders
The structure of a project s financing depends on the industry the transaction is taking place, the
underlying business model and in particular the allocation of risks and responsibilities between the
individual partners (Weber Alfen, 2010).
Risk allocation is performed as part of the development of the project structure, which takes into
account the distribution of responsibilities and risks during the planning, construction, financing and
operating phases (Corner, 2006). The aim is to identify an efficient and effective structure that
optimises the costs of the project and ensures that the risk occurrences do not damage the project
(Delmon, 2009). According to Grimsey and Lewis (2007) risk allocation has two elements: optimal
risk management and value for money. The first implies that the

Guns Do Kill People By Philip Caputo
In Guns do kill people, an article by Philip Caputo on the changes that need to be made to gun safety
and gun laws, Caputo brings to light the problem that mass destruction firearms create in our world.
Most do not understand the harm of semi automatic handguns, but as someone who has had
experience firsthand of the destruction they have, he shows the impact that is made by them. Based on
his experience with semi automatic weapons and his research of past violence in the United States,
Caputo makes a compelling argument to justify outlawing mass destruction firearms.
Caputo has had first hand experience with the harm that semi automatic firearms have. He served a
tour of duty with a Marine Rifle Company in Vietnam and was seriously wounded by an AK 47. He is
intimately aware of the design of what these weapons are meant to do. These weapons are made to kill
people; as many as possible, as quickly as possible (Caputo). According to Caputo s experience, it is
shown that he is aware of the repercussions that these weapons have and what they can do. Caputo,
being a hunter who owns shotguns and rifles, says it is prohibited to bring a weapon of mass
destruction into the fields. A semi automatic 9mm handgun is not meant to injure or severely wound, it
is meant to kill no matter what the cost. For example, the use of semi automatic firearms outside of the
military and the federal government could be extremely detrimental to many civilians and their
everyday lives. Most

In India, women entrepreneurs constitute a negligible proportion of the total entrepreneurs. the typical
enterprises are the extension of kitchen activities i.e. the 3 P s: Pickle, Powder, Papped or traditional
cottage industries of basket making etc. in India women have contributed mainly in household
industries due to less technical know how required and little competition from men in these industries.
In recent survey of business women in Delhi and surrounding areas it was estimated that 40% of these
entrepreneurs have ventured into non traditional areas such as electronics, engineering, consultancy
etc.
The state of Kerla where the literacy among women is highest in India provides a good example of
women entrepreneurship. As on march 1984, there were 782 women s industrial units in Kerla, of
these 592 were Proprietary concerns, 43 partnership concerns, 42 charitable institutions, 3 joint stock
companies and 102 cooperative societies.

Abstract
In this paper I will discuss the history of the Cherokee Indians in the United States. First by describing
the tribes pre Columbian history to include the settlement dates and known cultural details. Then a
brief description of the cultural and religious beliefs of the tribe will be given, as well as the tribe s
history after contact with settlers. Finally discussing John Ross, who he was and how he affected the
Cherokee Indians.
Cherokee Indians The word Cherokee is believed to have evolved from a Choctaw word meaning
Cave People . It was picked up and used by Europeans and eventually accepted the adopted by
Cherokees in the form of Tsalagi or Jalagi. Traditionally, the people ... Show more content on

Use of a caste system was a part of the Cherokees social structures before contacts with whites. The
white south created its own social caste system with white planters as the aristocracy and the African
slave at the peon (Bullard, F.B. 1989). The colonists who settled in the south were different than their
counterparts in the North. The main heritage of the southern colonists was the Celtic in contrast to the
English heritage of the colonists who settled in the north. The Celtic heritage these southerner
colonists brought to North America from Europe had a profound effect on their folkways as well as
influencing their Indian neighbors. Traditional Cherokee lands had incorporated ass of Kentucky,
much of Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, North Carolina and a small part of Virginia
and what is now West Virginia. The spatial proximity was one reason for the development of an
identity with the Southern colonist and their institutions and traditions (Bullard, F.B. 1989). Indian
agent for the United States, George Butler, commented that he felt the majority of the material
progress in the Indian Territory was a result of slavery. The age of masters measured in the distribution
in slaves provides evidence for the upward mobility of slavery for the Cherokee. The principal
difference from the white south was the treatment of slaves in the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee
avoided mistreatment of the slaves and Major Ridge s wife

In John Cheever s short story, The Swimmer he writes about the loss of the American Dream. The
American Dream means many things to many people, but for Ned the main character it is being
wealthy, living the high life, hanging around friends and drinking around a pool (Cheever 2250). Ned
has been fooling himself into believing everything is okay financially as he travels from house to
house drinking and swimming in the pools in order to reach his house at the end of the housing
community (Cheever 2250 54). What Ned finds as he travels from each of his friends houses is a
change in his friends; some are happy to see him, whereas, others barely notice he is there or are away,
but he never awakens to the realization that things have changed until he gets to his old house
(Cheever 2250 54). When Ned gets to his house, it is dark and nobody is home and reality begins to

King Herold Research Paper
During the time of King Herold, there was a priest named Zechariah. He belonged to the priestly
division of Abijah and his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. They were righteous and
they observed all of the Lord s commandments and decrees. Elizabeth was childless because she was
not able to conceive, and they were both old. An angel of the Lord, Gabriel, appeared to him, standing
at the right side of the altar of incense and when Zechariah saw him, he was afraid and fearful. The
angel said told him to not be afraid and that his prayer has been heard and Elizabeth will bear a son,
and they were to name him John. Zechariah asked the angel of God that how can he be sure of this and

Solar Energy Essay
Solar Energy
What do the bubonic plague in the 14th century, the influenza epidemic of the early 20th century and
the spread of HIV/AIDS in the late 20th and early 21st centuries have in common? One answer,
according to Joel B. Stronberg author of the American Solar Energy Society s Common Sense, is that
they have all been called pandemics. According to Merriam Webster.com, a pandemic occurs over a
wide geographic distribution and affects an exceptionally high proportion of the population. Joel B.
Stronberg declares that we are currently facing another pandemic. This pandemic is the combination
of the consequences of burning fossil fuels. The two major problems from burning fossil fuels are
global warming and decreasing oil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The potential of solar energy is tremendous. We should take advantage of this opportunity and make
solar energy usage more common!
Since solar radiation produces so much energy, why aren t we using a lot more of it? Solar energy
does have some disadvantages. One of the major problems with solar energy is the intermittent speed
at which it arrives at the Earth s surface. This causes problems with consistency when heating or
lighting. Another drawback to solar energy is that it requires great space to be gathered in effective
quantities. This makes it difficult to place the solar panels in areas where space is costly, valuable, or
unavailable. A final reason why we are not using solar energy is because it is quite costly. According
to JC Solar Homes, it would cost a homeowner roughly one hundred to two hundred thousand dollars
to convert his or her home to solar energy. Obviously, this is not realistic or reasonable for most
people; therefore, solar energy is often overlooked as a serious possibility for solving our approaching
energy pandemic.
There are different types of commonly used solar energy conversions. Photovoltaic energy is
commonly called solar cell energy. PV is a non mechanical device that converts sunlight into
electricity. Solar thermal heat is being used in swimming pools, space heating and to heat water for
domesticated uses. Solar thermal power plants use sunlight to heat a liquid which turns into steam.

  • 3. Globalization And Localization Globalization, like most phenomenon, is controversial. It is defined as the increasing cross border flow of goods, services, money, people, information, and culture (as cited in Ariely, 2011). Though, it has been around for many years, the extent at which it impacts economies, international relationships, and everyday life has become more profound than ever before. Due to its controversial nature, there have been many critiques of its process. Postcolonial critics have argued that it is merely the latest stage in a long history of oppression and exploitation by Western nations, and that the idea of global citizenship is just another way for the West to impose its values on the rest of the world. This is not the first claim to be made against globalization, with many others throwing around claims of Americanization , and global erasing the local . This is due to the lack of understanding of globalization as not just a historical process, but also a conceptual change in which people are aware of world as a single place, ... [with] an important effect on various types of social identities around the world (as cited in Ariely, 2011). However, this process does not seek to eliminate local, social, or national identities. Globalization and localization are inseparably linked (as cited in Sobol, 2016). It creates a symbiotic relationship between the global and the local, where they complement and aid each other. The process of globalization is not the latest stage of oppression by Western countries, but rather the global integration [that] hastens the worldwide convergence of cultures (as cited in Sobol, 2016). Globalization is a phenomenon that benefits our world, as it is responsible for the integration of cultures, the rise in economies, and aids in international relationships. Globalization stimulates the integration of cultures as it opposes nationalism and xenophobic attitudes towards immigrants. Nationalism is defined as a sense that one s country is superior to other nations (as cited in Ariely, 2011). Nationalism along with constructive patriotism which reflects an attachment to country characterized by critical loyalty are two aspects of national identity tied in with postcolonial perspectives ... • 4. The Economic Disaster Of Detroit Detroit, Michigan once stood as the epitome of industrial American cities. In the mid 1990s Detroit had the highest income per capita and a booming automotive industry. During prohibition in the 1920s Detroit served as a major gateway for the importation of alcohol from Canada, whereby it thrived from this lucrative business. Also, around this same time the automotive industry was growing at a pace where jobs were begging to be filled, and the population of Detroit rose to nearly 2,000,000. There was a point in time where many other major U.S. cities envied Detroit and were jealous of its ever growing economy and infrastructure. At this time it seemed as though nothing would stop the economic growth of the Motor City. Sadly, these are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main causes of this economic collapse are the loss of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the state of Michigan due to globalization, the subtle racism of residents leading to the suburbanization of the Detroit area, and a group of crooked municipal government leaders that stole from the community. Despite these overwhelming obstacles Detroit is on the mend, and many see a bright future for this once great city. It is however, important to note that everybody have a weakness, and the same remains true when referring to a cities infrastructure. The most astounding reason for the quick decline of Detroit was the closure of many automotive factories and the deterioration of the American auto industry. Detroit was a city with everything going for it. Its quick economic growth in the early 20th century had a lot to do with its geographical location. It was located close to the nations major coal and iron distributors and it was easily accessible by water via the Detroit River. Edmund Wilson wrote in a critique of Detroit, You can see here, as it is impossible to do in a more varied and complex city, the whole structure of an industrial society. Wilson elegantly notes that Detroit depends entirely on the automotive industry as its source of sustainability where other cities have a more diversified industrial scene. This story really caught my attention because of the level of hospitality pirates show to a captain who held such respect with his own crew. The life of a sea faring man during the early 18th century was a grueling way of work. Competitive Dynamics between Dominant Multinationals and Emerging Market Firms Emerging economies are generally characterized by a rapid pace of economic growth, increasing liberalization of trade and investment regimes, and economic restructuring (Hoskisson et al, 2000). Mexico, for instance, maintained high trade barriers and imposed strict limitations on foreign investment through the mid 1980s. From the point at which Mexico joined the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in 1986 through the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and the United States in 1994 and a broad range of similar agreements with other countries, Mexican firms became increasingly exposed to competitive pressures from foreign firms in the form of imported products as well as foreign owned operations in Mexico. The central provision of the U.C.C. s good faith requirement is found in § 1 203, which provides that every contract or duty within this Act imposes an obligation of good faith in its performance or enforcement. With regard to debtor creditor relationships in particular, this obligation of good faith performance imposes on a lender a duty to deal in good faith with its borrower in all situations, not only in situations where, because of the circumstances of the loan, the lender has assumed actual control over and a fiduciary responsibility for the borrower. One troublesome but important aspect of the good faith performance obligation is its application to contracts, which provide that one party to the contract may, in its sole discretion, take certain actions pursuant to the contract. In such cases, the actions of the party who can exercise its discretion may affect all parties to the contract, and dependent parties must rely on the good faith of the party given the right to exercise its discretion. By saying this, Hamlet acknowledges that he is ready to kill and is not afraid of what follows. However, somewhere in his line of reasoning, he questions whether killing a person is morally justified. He comes up with multiple reasons on why not to kill him, one being that the king is praying and he wants to send him to hell, not to heaven. Eventually, his resolve hardens when he sees Fortinbras s army march across Denmark, and makes the remark: That, for a fantasy and trick of fame Go to their graves like beds, fight for a plot Whereon the numbers cannot try the cause, Which is not tomb enough and ... • 25. Impact Of The Age Of Exploration The era known as the Age of Exploration, sometimes called the Age of Discovery, officially began in the early 15th century and lasted through the 17th century. The period is characterized as a time when Europeans began exploring the world by sea in search of new trading routes, wealth, and knowledge. The impact of the Age of Exploration would permanently alter the world and transform geography into the modern science it is today. THE BIRTH OF THE AGE OF EXPLORATION Many nations were looking for goods such as silver and gold, but one of the biggest reasons for exploration was the desire to find a new route for the spice and silk trades. When the Ottoman Empire took control of Constantinople in 1453, it blocked European access to the area, severely limiting trade. In addition, it also blocked access to North Africa and the Red Sea, two very important trade routes to the Far East. The first of the journeys associated with the Age of Discovery were conducted by the Portuguese. Although the Portuguese, Spanish, Italians and other had been plying the Mediterranean for generations, most sailors kept well within sight of land or traveled known routes between ports. Prince Henry the Navigator changed that, encouraging explorers to sail beyond the mapped routes and discover new trade routes to West Africa. Portuguese explorers discovered the Madeira Islands in 1419 and the Azores in 1427. Over the coming decades, they would push farther south along the African coast, reaching the ... It was the first of it s kind and many of the conventions used by Walpole, which put it in a literary genre of it s own, were continued by authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Lewis. Many of these defining characteristics can be seen within the very first few pages of the text and for the purposes of this essay, to identify some of these conventions used and the relevance of this text to modernity I shall focus this analysis on the passage between pages twenty four and twenty six from the Oxford World s Classics edition. In Otranto, Walpole challenges his societies views of modernity and transgresses social laws by introducing the theme of incest into his novel with Manfred preying of his deceased son s betrothed, Isabella. This brings into play three defining features which became prevalent within gothic novels of the late eighteenth century: women in distress; women being threatened by powerful males; and the major theme of fear and in this example, specifically female fear. Isabella, a young, virginal woman becomes half dead with fright when faced with potential rape and becoming a spoiled woman at the hands of the powerful and threatening Manfred. Such suggestions, by Walpole s age were seen as scandalous and caused moral outrage, a thread that was carried through the gothic genre. This new genre may have provided for many, an escape from the rigid world of enlightenment. It brought to them a world of imagination and allowed them to immerse themselves in a world which had been morally forbidden and they could do it from the privacy of their own homes, allowing their indulgence, and perhaps, immoral thoughts to go unnoticed, providing a way for the darkness and immoral thoughts to come alive outside of the novel. At the end of the novel however, society s moral ideals surface as Manfred retires to a convent after the realisation of his sins and order is restored. • 33. Taking a Look at Photosynthetic Pigments Photosynthetic pigments Introduction Some animals and most plants use photosynthesis to convert light energy into chemical energy. The energy that is created can be stored and is accessed later on by consumers. The consumers of the organisms break bonds while digesting the plant material and the stored energy is released into their perspective systems. The entire process of photosynthesis can be summarized as carbon dioxide and water reacting with light to create sugar, water and oxygen. Although put deceivingly simple terms, the process of photosynthesis energy conversion can be broken into two different reaction pathways, a light independent reaction and a light dependent reaction. In the light independent reaction, the energy stored by the plant as ATP and NADPH is used to fixate carbon dioxide and create sugar. Inversely, the light dependent reactions use the absorption of light to produce ATP and high energy electrons that are stored. The absorbing molecules found within the plant are referred to as pigments and each one absorbs different wavelengths. For example, chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light while other pigments absorb all other wavelengths of light that are left over. The other pigments found in plants fall into a group called carotenoids. Within the carotenoid group, the wavelengths for violet and blue light are absorbed. Based on his experience with semi automatic weapons and his research of past violence in the United States, Caputo makes a compelling argument to justify outlawing mass destruction firearms. Caputo has had first hand experience with the harm that semi automatic firearms have. He served a tour of duty with a Marine Rifle Company in Vietnam and was seriously wounded by an AK 47. He is intimately aware of the design of what these weapons are meant to do. These weapons are made to kill people; as many as possible, as quickly as possible (Caputo). Solar Energy Essay Solar Energy What do the bubonic plague in the 14th century, the influenza epidemic of the early 20th century and the spread of HIV/AIDS in the late 20th and early 21st centuries have in common? One answer, according to Joel B. Stronberg author of the American Solar Energy Society s Common Sense, is that they have all been called pandemics. According to Merriam Webster.com, a pandemic occurs over a wide geographic distribution and affects an exceptionally high proportion of the population. Joel B. Stronberg declares that we are currently facing another pandemic. This pandemic is the combination of the consequences of burning fossil fuels. We should take advantage of this opportunity and make solar energy usage more common! Since solar radiation produces so much energy, why aren t we using a lot more of it? Solar energy does have some disadvantages. One of the major problems with solar energy is the intermittent speed at which it arrives at the Earth s surface. This causes problems with consistency when heating or lighting. Another drawback to solar energy is that it requires great space to be gathered in effective quantities. This makes it difficult to place the solar panels in areas where space is costly, valuable, or unavailable. A final reason why we are not using solar energy is because it is quite costly. According to JC Solar Homes, it would cost a homeowner roughly one hundred to two hundred thousand dollars to convert his or her home to solar energy. Obviously, this is not realistic or reasonable for most people; therefore, solar energy is often overlooked as a serious possibility for solving our approaching energy pandemic. There are different types of commonly used solar energy conversions. Photovoltaic energy is commonly called solar cell energy. PV is a non mechanical device that converts sunlight into electricity. Solar thermal heat is being used in swimming pools, space heating and to heat water for domesticated uses. Solar thermal power plants use sunlight to heat a liquid which turns into steam. The ...
