The human body has two bean-shaped kidneys located on either side of the backbone, each measuring approximately 10cm by 5cm by 3cm. The kidneys function as filters in the body, and are made up of an inner lighter medulla and outer darker cortex region. The functional filtering unit of the kidney is called the nephron, which filters blood to produce urine that is collected in the pelvis area.
