Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.

What Is Renewable Energy?
Renewable energy is energy which comes from Natural
Resources such as solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, biomass,
geothermal resources, and bio-fuels, rain, tides and hydrogen
which are renewable (naturally replenished).
About 16% of global final energy consumption comes from
renewable, with 10% coming from traditional biomass, which is
mainly used for heating, and 3.4% from hydroelectricity.
New renewable (small hydro, modern biomass, wind, solar,
geothermal, and bio-fuels) accounted for another 2.8% and are
growing very rapidly.
The share of renewable in electricity generation is around 19%,
with 16% of global electricity coming from hydroelectricity and
3% from new renewable.
Renewable energy is derived from natural processes that are r
eplenished constantly.

Background Of Solar Energy
Solar energy is the energy
derived from the sun through the
form of solar radiation.
A partial list of other solar
applications includes space
heating and cooling through solar
architecture, day lighting, solar
hot water, solar cooking, and high
temperature process heat for
industrial purposes.
The total solar energy absorbed
by Earth's atmosphere, oceans
and land masses is approximately
3,850,000 exajoules (EJ) per
year.

Background Of Solar Energy
During recent years, due to the
increase in fossil fuel prices and the
environmental problems caused by
the use of conventional fuels, we are
reverting back to renewable energy
sources.
In today's climate of growing energy
needs and increasing environmental
concern, alternatives to the use of
non-renewable and polluting fossil
fuels have to be investigated. One
such alternative is solar energy.
Solar energy is quite simply the
energy produced directly by the sun
and collected elsewhere, normally
the Earth.

Why Solar Energy?
Today there are various ways to get hot water by using electricity, firing
woods, coals, waste materials, LPG gas and by using solar energy. One of
the cheapest ways to get hot water is by using solar energy at long run.
Because
Reduced Energy Costs.
No need to operate
No use of electricity, coal, LPG gas or firing woods & waste
materials, so no any fear of short circuit, blasting and accidents.
Once properly installed and properly maintained solar system has
much long life.
No need to service for long time.

How Solar System Works in Various Industries
In this application, either full or part of the boiler feed water is
heated in solar water heaters to a temperature of 60-80˚C before
being supplied to the boiler. This replaces part of the fuel used in
the boiler.
In general, maximum fuel savings possible are of the order of 5%.
From the point of integration with the existing process, this is simple
to implement.
The economics of this option becomes favorable when petroleum
fuels are being used. The pay-back period after considering
depreciation and subsidy benefits for a furnace oil based industry is
reported to be around 3 years, while for a coal using industry, the
pay-back period is very short.
There are several industrial processes e.g. electroplating, textile
dyeing, cleaning/degreasing, drying, etc. which require hot water
below 100˚C. In these applications, solar water heater in conjunction
with a conventional water heating system can be used.
