Keywords: The Basics
Keywords are the foundation to the
majority of your SEO efforts. Keywords
are phrases or words that users type in
to the search bar of a search engine. It’s
important to target keywords that will
not only bring you the most traffic but
also the correct kind of traffic.
Let’s looks at how different types of keywords
can predict a user’s desired action.
Types of Keywords
Transactional Keywords: Phrases
used when a user is looking to take
action, typically making a purchase.
Ex: “Kanye West concert tickets”
Ex: “Quote for car insurance”
Types of Keywords
Informational Keywords: Phrases used
when a user is looking for information
to educate themselves on a future
decision.
Ex: “best SEO companies in San Diego”
Ex: “Top movies of 2012”
Types of Keywords
Navigational Keywords: Phrases used
when a user wants to be directed to
a particular website.
Ex: “ESPN”
Ex: “Mark Cuban’s blog”
Types of Keywords

Researching Keywords
Analyzing Your Company: What phrases do you believe
your target market would use when they are trying to
find you? Use Google Analytics to identify what
keywords your current traffic is using.
Analyzing Traffic: Use Google’s Keyword Tool to identify
what keywords in your industry have the most search
volume.
Analyzing Your Competition: Use SEMRush to identify
what keywords your competition is targeting for their
traffic. Is there a keyword that accounts for a good
portion of your competition’s traffic that you haven’t
thought of?

Analyzing Your Competition: Use SEMRush to identify what keywords your competition is targeting for their traffic.
