But what does that mean for developers and what impact does this have on the user? How do we convey the understanding and competence? Sascha covers IoT challenges and inspires with creepy examples. He also introduces a prototypic approach for hardware and software ideation based on visual programming and games like Minecraft. Of course, it is shown that this pragmatic approach is also suitable for professional projects using IoT platforms and smart home solutions.
Sacrificing the golden calf of "coding"
Chris Heilmann gave a talk at BTConf in Munich in January 2018 about machine learning, automation worries, and coding. He discussed how coding used to refer to creative programming within technical limitations but now often refers to programming for work. He addressed common worries about new technologies and dependencies, and argued that abstractions are not inherently bad and help more people build products together through consensus. The talk focused on using tools to be more productive and enabling rather than seeing them as dangers, and creating solutions for users rather than fighting old approaches.

Big Crypto for Little Things
The team proposes to develop encryption solutions suitable for common microcontrollers used in IoT devices. Their goal is to create transparent encryption that is easy for makers to implement. Their initial idea is an open source encryption library, educating the public, and a website hosting the libraries. They discuss alternative ideas like encrypted chips or an encryption software optimized for medical devices. Their final MVP is a communication system design service to improve cybersecurity in medical devices, with the goal of transitioning to other applications.

This dynamics illustrates the "power of social".

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
