· To use laboratory techniques to test for the presence of chemicals/molecules in our water
· To find other resources of information on water quality

· Each pair of students will perform assays on their water sample to determine whether it contains iron, chlorine, ammonia, calcium or magnesium, nitrates and oxygen

Water is a chemical (H2O) that all life depends on. It makes up about 60% of the human body and our cells and organ systems are dependent on its unique characteristics. It is an important solvent, which means that many things dissolve into it (see below for a short list). For example, table salt easily dissolves in water. Also, water naturally has a pH of 7, but when other chemicals are present the pH can change. When pH decreases, we call that acidic.
As human population grow, so do their needs for, including their need for water. Many researchers believe that in the next 20 years over half the world’s population will have a shortage of potable or drinkable water. Despite the fact that 75% of the surface of earth is covered in water, 97% is salt water in the oceans and another 2% is frozen in glaciers, leaving us with less than 1% to use. Scientists hope to develop methods to increase potable water using desalination techniques, but in the meantime we have to take care not to contaminate or pollute our current drinkable water sources.
Toxins in the water are absorbed or consumed by primary producers and primary consumers – those “low”on the food chain – like bacteria, algae, protists and invertebrates. As toxins are transferred “up the food chain” or from one trophic level to the next, they are concentrated and become even more toxic to the organism. This phenomenon is called bioaccumulation or biologic magnification (Figure 1). This is one reason that humans need to be concerned about pollution in natural rivers and lakes in addition to our public drinking water.

Every day, the ocean absorbs about 22 million tons of carbon dioxide. That's about the weight of
15 million hybrid automobiles. Just as you can't see the carbon dioxide that comes out of your
own body each time you exhale, you can't see the gas as it dissolves into the seas.
Space isn't an issue. After all, the oceans cover 72 percent of the planet. Still, there is a problem
brewing beneath the waves. Carbon dioxide in the air helps insulate our planet and keep it warm.
But there can be too much of a good thing: In the last 200 years, humans have added a lot of
extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas to produce
energy. Two hundred years' worth of extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has bulked up our
carbon dioxide blanket. Now, average temperatures around the world are rising. Scientists refer
to this as global warming.
But effects of this global-warming gas go beyond the air and land. Much of the carbon dioxide
emitted into Earth’s atmosphere ends up in the seas. Of every 10 tons of the gas added to the
atmosphere, two or three end up in the water. The growing amounts of carbon dioxide that
human activities add to the air have begun changing the chemistry of the oceans. It's making
them more acidic. This process is called ocean acidification.
Acids include liquids like vinegar and lemon juice that taste sour. These materials react with
bases ― substances, such as ammonia or baking soda, that feel slippery — to form salts. Water is
neutral, which means it's neither an acid nor a base. Scientists measure acidity using the pH
scale; acids have a pH between 0 and 7, and bases between 7 and 14. (Neutral water has a pH of
7.0.)

Ocean water is slightly basic, with a pH of about 8.1. But that number is changing. As the
amount of carbon dioxide in ocean water goes up, the pH of ocean water goes down. And that
means it becomes more acidic.
It's happening now, and it's happening fast. By the year 2100, if we continue to add the same
amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that we are adding now, the oceans will be more
than twice as acidic as they were before the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution
began more than 200 years ago. (That period describes the rapid growth of industry in the
Northerm Hemisphere.)

There are two types of plants Halophytes and Glycophytes (categories on the basis of their responses to the salinity) examples are Thellungiella halophila and Arabidopsis thaliana, respectively.
Earlier Arabidopsis was considered as Model organism incase of plants but it can't tolerate high saline condition that's the reason for the limited study of plant towards salinity responses. But in the year 2004 the discovery of new plant Thellungiella halophila generates new knowledge about the tolerance mechanism of plants towards salinity responses because it's a halophytes which can tolerate extreme saline condition.
And also it has very similarity with the Arabidopsis so it's considered as the Model organism for the study of Salt stress physiology.

Lab: Differential Expression Differential gene expression provides the ability for a cell or
organism to respond to a constantly changing external environment. The specific constellation of
proteins required for optimal function and growth varies with cellular age and environmental
context. Thus, protein production is carefully regulated by multiple mechanisms that modulate
both transcriptional and translational pathways. Control of transcription initiation by RNA
polymerase is a predominant mechanism for regulating expression of specific proteins,
presumably because it provides maximal conservation of energy for the cell. We can often
observe the consequence of differential transcription due to the presence or absence of particular
proteins or the growth in particular environments. Control can also occur at translation; the
mRNA is synthesized, but only in certain circumstances is it translated. Control can also occur at
the level of protein function; the protein is inactive, or activity is not observed due to the lack of
the substrate. In this lab we will observe differential expression of two different genes encoded
on plasmids. We will analyze transcriptional activity, translational activity, and protein function.
Plasmids are extra-chromosomal DNA. Bacteria often have plasmids and will replicate the
plasmid and pass it to daughter cells (vertical transmission) and to neighboring cells (horizontal).
Plasmids are a mechanism of gene diversity. In order to stably retain the plasmid, there needs to
be some type of metabolic reason for the bacteria to maintain the plasmid. In other words, the
plasmid confers an advantage. Plasmids contain: 1. Ori: the plasmid may present is low or high
copy number. 2. Lab generated plasmids typically also contain a selectable marker (antibiotic
resistance), 3. Additional gene for ease of visual screening 4. Multiple cloning site
pUC19 is one of a series of plasmid cloning vectors created by Joachim Messing and co-workers.
The designation "pUC" is derived from the classical "p" prefix (denoting "plasmid") and the
abbreviation for the University of California, where early work on the plasmid series had been
conducted. It is a circular double stranded DNA and has 2686 base pairs. pUC19 is one of the
most widely used vector molecules as the recombinants, or the cells into which foreign DNA has
been introduced, can be easily distinguished from the non-recombinants based on color

There are two types of plants Halophytes and Glycophytes (categories on the basis of their responses to the salinity) examples are Thellungiella halophila and Arabidopsis thaliana, respectively.
Earlier Arabidopsis was considered as Model organism incase of plants but it can't tolerate high saline condition that's the reason for the limited study of plant towards salinity responses. But in the year 2004 the discovery of new plant Thellungiella halophila generates new knowledge about the tolerance mechanism of plants towards salinity responses because it's a halophytes which can tolerate extreme saline condition.
And also it has very similarity with the Arabidopsis so it's considered as the Model organism for the study of Salt stress physiology.
There are major two pathways involved in response to Salt stress (described in presentation).

organism to respond to a constantly changing external environment. The specific constellation of
proteins required for optimal function and growth varies with cellular age and environmental
context. Thus, protein production is carefully regulated by multiple mechanisms that modulate
both transcriptional and translational pathways. Control of transcription initiation by RNA
polymerase is a predominant mechanism for regulating expression of specific proteins,
presumably because it provides maximal conservation of energy for the cell. We can often
observe the consequence of differential transcription due to the presence or absence of particular
proteins or the growth in particular environments. Control can also occur at translation; the
mRNA is synthesized, but only in certain circumstances is it translated. Control can also occur at
the level of protein function; the protein is inactive, or activity is not observed due to the lack of
the substrate. In this lab we will observe differential expression of two different genes encoded
on plasmids. We will analyze transcriptional activity, translational activity, and protein function.
Plasmids are extra-chromosomal DNA. Bacteria often have plasmids and will replicate the
plasmid and pass it to daughter cells (vertical transmission) and to neighboring cells (horizontal).
Plasmids are a mechanism of gene diversity. In order to stably retain the plasmid, there needs to
be some type of metabolic reason for the bacteria to maintain the plasmid. In other words, the
plasmid confers an advantage. Plasmids contain: 1. Ori: the plasmid may present is low or high
copy number. 2. Lab generated plasmids typically also contain a selectable marker (antibiotic
resistance), 3. Additional gene for ease of visual screening 4. Multiple cloning site
pUC19 is one of a series of plasmid cloning vectors created by Joachim Messing and co-workers.
The designation "pUC" is derived from the classical "p" prefix (denoting "plasmid") and the
abbreviation for the University of California, where early work on the plasmid series had been
conducted. It is a circular double stranded DNA and has 2686 base pairs. pUC19 is one of the

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing.
