ASSIGNMENT 08
C01 Introduction to Business
Directions: Be sure to save an electronic copy of your answer before submitting it to Ashworth College for grading. Unless otherwise stated, answer in complete sentences, and be sure to use correct English, spelling and grammar. Sources must be cited in APA format. Your response should be four (4) double-spaced pages; refer to the "Assignment Format" page located on the Course Home page for specific format requirements.
Part A
1. The text says that Toyota has focused on quality as its operations capability. Describe two (2) ways that Toyota's operations might have changed if it had focused on low cost instead of quality.
2. FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service compete for many of the same customers. Describe two (2) ways that their strategies for attracting customers are different.
Part B
Mary Ann has always loved to cook and is interested in starting a catering business. Being aware of the failure rate of new businesses, she is considering buying an existing catering business that is up for sale. The current owners claim that the business is highly profitable, but Mary Ann has her doubts. She wonders why the owners would be so interested in selling the business if it is such a money maker. Furthermore, the price that they are asking seems high to Mary Ann. Without any formal training in accounting, Mary Ann asks a friend, Rolanda, for advice.
1. Rolanda suggests that Mary Ann may benefit from the services of a noncertified public accountant. Describe two (2) types of services that could be provided.
2. The auditor's report has come back and Mary Ann is reviewing the financial statements. The current balance sheet shows that the business has more liabilities than assets. Why would this explain the need to sell the business? Provide two (2) supporting facts.
3. Rolanda suggests that, even with the negative owners' equity, this business might still be worth buying. Describe one (1) other indicator, a financial term found within the auditor's report that they should consider for this decision.

by Donald Bittar

Annual Report Workbook
Getting under the hood of an Annual Report
and knowing what’s inside
by Donald Bittar
Introduction
You can use this workbook for analyzing many companies and saving your analysis for each one, like many professionals. Just like them, over time, you can compare a company’s actual performance to your analysis and predictions. Saving your analysis sheets can help sharpen you analytical skills.
The questions in the workbook are numbered the same way as they are in the book, ‘Getting Under the Hood of an Annual Report’. As there are no questions in the first chapter of the book, the workbook starts with Chapter 2. It will make it easier for you to relate the questions in the workbook to those in the book.
Your input to the workbook will appear in a dark green font while the questions appear in blue. The different font colors can make it easier for you to see your work.
You’ll need to do some number crunching to complete your annual report analysis. The Big Calculating Tool, located on your CD, can save you a great deal of time and make the number crunching nearly painless. Every ratio and calculation for the book is included in the Big Calculating Tool. You’ll have more time for analysis if you use the Big Calculating Tool.

Comment on whether the U.S. government would support a business owner's decision to expand internationally or import in light of the balance of payments and how the move internationally may affect the business's reputation as a local small-business owner.
Decision-Making in a Global Economy
In a recent State of the Union Address, the President of the United States announced the formation of the "National Export Initiative," an important endeavor that is necessary for long-term, sustainable economic growth for the country. The president's goal is to double exports within 5 years, which, it is hoped, should reduce unemployment by adding 2 million jobs.
This is the first time in history that the United States has put a real focus on government-wide export promotion.
Since then, the president has signed an Executive Order that formed the "Export Promotion Cabinet" within the presidential administration. The Department of Commerce is an important player in this initiative and is charged with making sure that U.S. businesses can actively participate in international markets by increasing their exports of goods, services, and agricultural products.

Cash Flow Planning Bonus Project
Plan Ahead
We are told, in business, that we should be proactive; and broadly what is meant by that is to focus our efforts and attention on the long-term and to think in terms of the long-term consequences of our actions.
Proactive people simply will not accept that there is nothing that can be done about the unreasonable boss or the events of daily life - they will point out that there are always choices. It is by the decisions we make, our responses to people, events and circumstances that proactive people can and do affect the future. We may have no control over what life throws at us but we always have a choice about how we are to respond. —Stephen Covey's landmark book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
The purpose of creating a Cash Flow Plan is to spend your paycheck on paper before you actually spend it during the month
Remember:
Money is active and always moving
Wealth is no longer measured in what you make a year
Wealth is measured in what you do with your money during a year
You will either be on your way to being wealthy, broke, or poor
Give your money a name
Rent/Mortgage, food, utilities, taxes, insurance, etc.
Money that is simply left unaccounted for will always find a way out of your personal financial plan
This Cash Flow Plan should be done every pay period!
Recommended Percentages used for Budgeting
The following are a compilation of several sources to derive the suggested percentage guidelines. However, these are only recommended percentages and will change dramatically if you have a very high or very low income.
For instance, if you have a very low income, your necessities percentages will be high. If you have a high income your necessities will be a lower percentage of income and hopefully savings (not debt) will be higher than recommended.
ITEMACTUAL %RECOMMENDED %
CHARITABLE GIFTS _________ 10%

Cash Flow Planning
Every dollar of your income should be allocated to some category on this sheet. Money "left over" should be put back into a category even if you make up a new category. You are making the spending decisions ahead of time here. Almost every category (except debt) should have some dollar amount in it.
Fill in the amount for each subcategory under "Subtotal" and then the total each main category under "Total." As you go through your first month, fill in the "Actually Spent" column with your real expenses or the saving you did for that area. If there is a substantial difference in the plan versus the reality something has to give. You will either have to adjust the amount allocated to that area up and another down or you will have to better c ...

3. Read the following text:
Many studies have examined the effect of unemployment insurance on job search. The most persuasive studies use data on the experiences of unemployed
individuals rather than economy-wide rates of unemployment. Individual data often yield sharp results that are open to few alternative explanations.
One study followed the experience of individual workers as they used up their eligibility for unemployment-insurance benefi ts. It found that when unemployed
workers become ineligible for benefi ts, they are more likely to fi nd jobs. In particular, the probability of a person fi nding a job more than doubles when his
or her benefi ts run out. One possible explanation is that an absence of benefi ts increases the search effort of unemployed workers. Another possibility is that
workers without benefi ts are more likely to accept job offers that would otherwise be declined because of low wages or poor working conditions.
Additional evidence on how economic incentives affect job search comes from an experiment that the state of Illinois ran in 1985. Randomly selected new claimants for unemployment insurance were each offered a $500 bonus if they found employment within 11 weeks. The subsequent experience of this group was compared to that of a control group not offered the incentive. The average duration of unemployment for the group offered the $500 bonus was 17.0 weeks, compared to18.3 weeks for the control group. Thus, the prospect of earning the bonus reduced the average spell of unemployment by 7 percent, suggesting that more effort was devoted to job search. This experiment shows clearly that the incentives provided by the unemployment-in ...

Ethics Case of Managerial Accounting
Edward Saylor is the president of Ramon Company, a company whose stock is traded on a
national exchange. In a meeting with investment analysts at the beginning of the year, Saylor had
predicted that the company’s earnings would grow by 20% by this year. Unfortunately, sales
have been less than expected for the year, and Saylor concluded within two weeks of the end of
the fiscal year that it would be impossible to ultimately report an increase in earnings as large as
predicted unless some drastic action was taken. Accordingly, Saylor has ordered that wherever
possible, expenditure should be postponed to the new year ----including canceling or postponing
orders with suppliers, delaying planned maintenance and training, and cutting back on end-of-
year advertising and travel. Additionally, Saylor ordered the company’s controller to carefully
scrutinize all costs that are currently classified as period costs and reclassify as many as possible
as product costs. The company is expected to have substantial inventories at the end of the year.
The following aspects should be covered in your report:
1. Why would reclassifying period costs as product costs increase this period’s reported
earnings?
2. Do you believe Saylor’s actions, such as postponing and canceling expenditures, are
ethical? Why or why not? Please cite the ethical standards (such as competence, integrity,
credibility and confidentiality) to support your opinion.
3. Do you believe Saylor’s action, such as reclassifying period costs as product costs, are
ethical? Why or why not? Please cite the ethical standards (such as competence, integrity,

SAVING _________ 5-10%
HOUSING _________ 25 -35%
UTILITIES _________ 10-15%
FOOD _________ 15%
TRANSPORTATION _________ 10%

MEDICAL/HEALTH _________ 5-10%

DEBTS _________ 5-10%

Task: Individual assignment
· Exercises have to be explained and calculations shown.
1. Consider an economy that produces only pens. In year 1, the quantity produced is 4 bars and the price is 5 €. In year 2, the quantity produced is 5 bars and the price is 6. In year 3, the quantity produced is 6 bars and the price is 7. Year 1 is the base year.
a. What is nominal GDP for each of these three years?
b. What is real GDP for each of these years?
c. What is the GDP deflator for each of these years?
d. What is the percentage growth rate of real GDP from year 2 to year 3?
e. What is the inflation rate as measured by the GDP deflator from year 2 to year 3?
2. Suppose that people consume only three goods, as shown in this table:
Raquets Nets bottle of water
2019 price 3 € 5 € 2 €
2019 quantity 200 200 300
2020 price 3 7 3
2020 quantity 200 200 300
a. What is the percentage change in the price of each of the three goods?
b. Using a method similar to the CPI, compute the percentage change in the overall price level.
c. If you were to learn that a bottle of water increased in size from 2019 to 2020, should that information affect your calculation of the inflation rate? If so, how?
Ethics Case of Managerial Accounting Edward Saylor is the BetseyCalderon89
Please cite the ethical standards (such as competence, integrity,
credibility and confidentiality) to support your opinion.
4. If you were the company’s controller, what would you do?
Instructions
1. The case report should be typed with double-space. No more than 5 pages.
2. Do not just answer the questions presented in this page. The report should be completed in
the paper formant with introduction, major contents, and conclusion.
3. You can cite the ethical standards or moral theories to support your ideas, such as the ethical
code in the IMA Statement of Ethics.
4. Your report will be evaluated based on the rubrics of written communications skills, critical
thinking, and business ethics. The related business ethics rubrics are attached.

Die soon.
“Life is too short”
The poem “We real cool” is written by Gwendolyn Brooks. The poem is basically explaining some of the issues that we as students face. The author wrote this poem when she was walking by a pool hall during school time. She was wondering how the guys who skipped school felt. The poem was banned because of the word jazz, many thought the word jazz was referring to sex. “We real cool” in the first stanza by itself is saying that they think that they are too cool for school so they left school. I believe the poem is describing a situation where they are in or it could be talking about the listeners. Throughout the poem the author is explaining how they left school and after that everything was downhill.

iLab 6 of 7: Login and Security Levels (30 Points)
Submit your assignment to the Dropbox located on the silver tab at the top of this page.
(See Syllabus "Due Dates for Assignments & Exams" for due dates.)
i L A B O V E R V I E W
Scenario/Summary
In this week's lab, we will create a login form, validate a user based on their login name and password, and allow them to access the system or not. We will assign a session variable to determine the level of security the user has and allow certain functions to be displayed or not displayed in the existing frmPersonnel form depending on the assigned security level. (NOTE: In some cases the instructions for this lab will be less specific than in earlier labs, because you are expected to apply what you have learned in earlier weeks. Refer to the detailed instructions in previous weeks' labs if you need to do so.)
Instructions for Week 6 iLab: Login and Security Levels
Click on the link above to view the tutorial.
Please watch this tutorial before beginning the iLab.
The tutorial has audio.
Deliverables
When you try to log in, if you use User Name = Mickey and Password = Mouse, the frmMain form should open with all links visible. If you use User Name = Minnie and Password = Mouse, the frmMain form should open with only the Salary Calculator, View Personnel, and Search options should be available. You will have a new option called Manage Users that will allow you to add new users and remove or update existing users. Once you have verified that it works, save your website, zip up all files, and submit in the Dropbox.
Note on database connections: We are using a SQLDataSource control for the Edit employees feature we added. You should be using the connection string stored in the web.config file for your database connection for this control. Rather than creating a new connection each time, just use this connection. If you change the folder where your website is (e.g., you copy each week's work to a new location), you will need to update the web.config. The advantage of using the database connection in the web.config is that you only have to set the configuration in one location.
Before starting this week's lab, make sure everything is working and that all database connections are properly configured.

Need discussion board type answers to the following questions. No wo.docxniraj57
Need discussion board type answers to the following questions. No word length, but must be substantial.
1. Why is the difference between a sign and a symbol so crucial to understanding the nature of human language? Is there a relationship between a culture's basic socio-cultural patterns and the ways in which its members use language?
2.
Can you think of ways in your own lives that sex or gender have an effect on what you ordinarily do?
Optional Credit possibility: In some cultures a woman may marry another woman and a man may marry another man. What does this tell us about the relationships among sex, gender and life in society? In those societies? or in general?
3. What generalizations can you make about the relationships among environment, technology and carrying capacity? Optional Credit Possibility: Some scholars have suggested that ultimately the development of food growing technologies around 10,000 B.C.E. can be thought of as a disaster for human socio-cultural life. Put together some arguments supporting and some arguments contradicting this argumernt
4.
What conditions do you think are necessary for a society to adopt large or small kin groups as a major organizing system?
Optional Credit possibility: What are some of the functions of large extended kin groups in the societies in which they are found?
5. Can you suggest a factor or factors that have contributed to the emergence of stratified societies?
Optional Credit possibility: What is the evidence leading to the assertion that social stratrification is not a natural outgrowth of human nature?
6. How do the ideas of Means of Production and their ownership/control help you to understand the political and economic arrangements of the contemporary world
7.
You need to deal with only one of these, but, of course, you may deal with both. 1) Is there a necessary conflict between science and religion? 2) What is your response to the idea that there are peoples in the world whose local languages do not have a word that can be translated as "art," but who still have some highly developed arts?
Either one of these would be suitable for an Optional Credit essay.
8.
Do you think globalization always puts emerging nations at a disadvantage? What is your evidence?
Optional Credit possibility: Can you see some ways in which some of the processes we include in "globalization? are also gendered?

I do not know where to begin on this topic. The video, that I just watched is very emotional. It is probably the most powerful three minutes and thirty-nine seconds that I have ever witnessed. My answer or opinion on this topic is simple, the individuals who committed those heinous crimes do not deserve to be released back into society. The members of the parole board who made the conscious decision or lack of a conscious decision to release the teenagers who committed the murder of Shanda, I wonder what was going through their mind when they made their decisions? Did they think of Shanda's family? Transition to the two year old, James who was murdered by the ten year old's , Jon Veneables and Robert Thompson. Ten years old or not, they should have not been released back into society. The frightening thing is they have new identities and are they capable of contributing to society? Is it possible they could have a relapse and commit another heinous crime as they did when they were ten years old.
Setting emotion aside, I take the stance of no release for those who have commit cruel, terrorizing, and malicious acts of violence. If prison officials or those who make such decisions are worried about prison overcrowding, then they should focus their attention on the sentences given to those who possess small amounts of controlled substances.
The scales of justice are not balanced in these matters. Where is the justice for the families who have lost a family member to these acts? In my opinion they are being victimized when such decisions are made to release the killers of their family member back into society.

The Work
With Tartuffe, Molière moved further away from the simple structure derived from French farce. In this play, there is again a middle-aged man, Orgon, who can be tricked because of his obsession. Yet, although the trickster, Tartuffe, is a person outside the power structure, in this case he is a vicious hypocrite who must be stripped of his power over Orgon if poetic justice is to prevail. Therefore, there is another pair of tricksters — Orgon’s wife Elmire and his servant Dorine — who must set things right and aid the usual young lovers.
The structure of this play is also unusual in that the title character does not appear until the third act. In the first two acts, the characters voice their opinions of Tartuffe, this mysterious, seemingly pious man whom Orgon, the head of a prosperous Parisian household, has taken into his home as an honored guest. Except for Madame Pernelle, Orgon’s mother, the family members are unanimous in voicing their dislike of the man. Orgon’s young wife, Elmire, her stepson Damis, her stepdaughter Mariane, and her brother Cléante, the raisonneur, as well as the impertinent servant Dorine, all see Tartuffe for the hypocrite that he is.
After this preparation has been made, Orgon enters, and Molière begins to substantiate the fact that he is indeed besotted by this stranger. In a hilarious dialogue, Dorine attempts to report on the family, only to be answered over and over again by Orgon’s anxious inquiry, “And Tartuffe?” followed by a heartfelt “poor fellow.” Since Tartuffe’s activities involve gluttonous eating and a good deal of sleeping, Orgon’s concern about the man is ridiculous. The fact that Orgon’s infatuation could have serious results is soon made clear, when he reveals his plan to make Tartuffe a member of the family by giving him his daughter in marriage. It is at this point that Elmire and Dorine begin to formulate plans to deceive the deceiver by attacking his own weaknesses.
Tartuffe’s susceptibility to lust is revealed as soon as he makes his long-awaited entrance in the third act, when he begs Dorine to cover her bosom, so as not to tempt him to sin. Elmire’s plan seems foolproof: She will lead him to make his designs upon her explicit and then threaten to tell Orgon unless Tartuffe relinquishes his claims on Mariane. The plan fails, however, and Tartuffe plays upon Orgon’s emotions so skillfully that he manages to get Damis disinherited and himself made Orgon’s heir. Now both o.

Autonomy –When autonomy is removed in order to treat
someone ‘for their own good’ this is called paternalism.
Paternalism is often referred to in a
negative context as it removes autonomy, however it may be a
positive if it is used in cases where autonomy is not possible.
For example, someone who is
in a coma without an ACD, or an elderly patient with advanced
dementia (ethics here can be grey).
Veracity is telling the truth, and is often compared with
deception. Deception may be implying a falsehood or allowing
11. someone to believe a falsehood
without explicitly lying to them – the concept may be morally
similar to lying as you have allowed a lie to exist even without
verbalising it.
12. Journal 1 (10%)
Description
In assignment 1 , you are asked to research current news articles
in reputable online or print news media sources. Your research
goal is to find an important issue facing Canadian society
currently. You can use one of the issues discussed in the wiki
last week. Once you have found a reputable media source, you
are to complete the tasks below that will help you learn to be an
analytic reader.
This assignment relates to the following Course Learning
Requirements:
• CLR1: Identify current issues in Canadian society.
• CLR2: Distinguish between fact and opinion as they are
expressed in a variety of viewpoints.
Task
paste or enter the information listed below:
13. 1. Cite the article you are using in proper APA format. You
can find out how to do this here: LINK to OWL APA
Electronic Sources
2. Restate the issue concisely in your own words. (one
sentence)
3. State the conclusion the article has arrived at with regard
to the issue (one sentence)
4. List the reasons the author gives to support that conclusion
(use a bullet list)
Grading
As the instructor cannot read over every article students select
in detail, this is more of a participation-based exercise than a
direct evaluation of your skill in analyzing the media and
distilling articles into argument. You will be given full marks if
you complete all four tasks and do so in clear, concise, and
correct English. One mark will be deducted for every spelling,
grammar or content error (e.g. the citation not being properly
done). You may also lose marks for not completing the tasks
correctly (e.g. if you list what is clearly a reason as the
conclusion).
See the attached rubric for more grading details.
