Thomas Chan, Vice President of the company, meets with software engineer Suzanne Chalmers after she calls to resign. Though Chan offers her a 25% salary increase, more stock options, a larger office, and paid leaves to stay, Suzanne had concerns about the stressful work routines, monotonous work, and cramped workspace. She ultimately rejects the offers and leaves to join a startup, where she hopes to find more diverse roles, responsibilities, and address her other issues. Chan is an experienced executive who understands employee problems but was limited in how he could immediately improve Suzanne's work environment and accommodate her needs.
