This document provides the syllabus for an Art Appreciation course at Kellogg Community College. The course is a survey of contemporary and traditional visual art themes with an emphasis on communication through various art forms. Students will examine the role of visual art in cultures through history and today. The syllabus outlines the required materials, course content including lectures and activities, attendance policy, grading scale and expectations for participation, assignments, and policies regarding plagiarism and conduct.

4. Description of course A survey of contemporary and traditional visual art themes. Emphasis is on current problems in communications through painting, sculpture, photography, film, and architecture. Recommended for art majors prior to enrollment in Art 212 or 213. Humanities credit. Required Text – ARTFORMS: An introduction to the visual arts. Revised ninth edition, Patrick Frank, Prentice Hall. Supplemental materials – articles and handouts provided by instructor. Limited outside supplies and fees incurred by student.

5. Required materials for each class Scissors Glue stick Pencil Text book Notes and Handouts You will be required to bring in a few other items for class at a later date. These items include but are not limited to masking tape, brads, recycled items, magazines, etc.

6. Course Content The course consists of lectures, videos, and various in-class activities and discussions engaging the student in form and content analysis of visual art. Students will examine the role of visual art in creating and supporting the moral, social, political, economic and spiritual underpinnings of various cultures in both historical and contemporary settings. There will be (subject to scheduling) group visits to exhibitions and possible guest lectures by local and regional artists. Research, writing, and oral presentation skills are integral to successful completion of this class. Students can expect 3 – 6 hours of outside work per week. Students are responsible for any outside costs associated with entry fees to museums, exhibits, etc .

7. Participation is required in this class. You will be given 1 point for each class if you ask questions during class, participate with out being called on, or give feedback during discussions.

8. Attendance requirements This course involves many lectures, hands-on activities, and group participation, your consistent attendance is necessary for successful completion of the class. Attendance points (1 for each day of class) are given for each class period you attend. It is in your best interest to attend class regularly. KCC’s policy is that regular class attendance is considered an essential part of a student’s educational experience and a requirement for an adequate evaluation of student academic progress. Attendance is taken at the start of each class. Tardiness is not acceptable. Leaving early is counted as a tardy. Three tardies equal an absence. More than then 6 unexcused absences will cause you to fail the course. More than 3 unexcused absences lower your grade by a letter (B- becomes C-). Students are required to meet all assignment deadlines. When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what was covered in class from a fellow classmate. After you have exhausted all your resources, come to the instructor for missed assignments. When repeated or extended absence reaches levels where successful completion of the course is jeopardized and Excessive Absences Report will be made to the counseling staff. An attempt is them made to contact the student to resolve any problems. Continued absenteeism may lead to administrative action. All registered students will be expected to complete the course within the semester they are signed up. Incomplete grades for the course are rarely given and will only be granted if the student has completed at least half of the course with a grade of “C” or getter and then has a valid, documented excuse for not being able to complete the course on time, and has contacted the instructor prior to the scheduled last class to request an extension.

9. Make up policy Students must verify the reason for their absences. In case of illness or other documented excuse, make up can be assigned. Inside-class assignments cannot be made up. Make up tests must be taken prior to next scheduled class period. Example – a Monday test must be made up before class time on the following Wednesday at the convenience of the instructor. Meeting deadlines consistently will greatly increase your chances of succeeding in this course. Please pay attention to assigned readings and due dates. Homework assignments are considered late if not turned in at the start of class. Late assignments, including in-class projects, will be accepted up until the start of the next scheduled class period unless student has arranged a later make-up lab with instructor. No credit will be given for late work finished beyond the start of the second class period or make up lab after the assignment is due. Make up tests and quizzes can only be arranged if the student has phoned, emailed or directly contacted the instructor prior to the next full class following the original test date. Notify your instructor ASAP in the event of extended illness or other emergency that might require academic counseling to resolve.

11. Extra credit Extra credit up to 20 points is available when all work is completed. Extra credit assignments/events will be announced in class. 4 events @ 5 pts each = 20 points 10 extra credit points can be earned for attending all class sessions. Other opportunities will be posted in class

Grading Scale 100 - 96 = A 80 – 76 = B- 60 – 56 = D+ 95 - 91 = A- 75 – 71 = C+ 55 – 51 = D 90 – 86 = B+ 70 – 66 = C 50 – 46 = D- 85 – 81 = B 65 – 61 = C- 45 and below = F Grade based on quality of and completion of assignments, as well as effort, motivation, and personal progress toward class work.

13. Goals of the Course The student will - 1. Develop a basic understand of the role that visual arts play in our culture and how they affect the student throughout their life. 2. Develop awareness of the need for critical thinking and analysis to bring a better understanding and quality to art and daily living. 3. Establish a working vocabulary of terms, concepts, and media used in the making of art through writings and presentations. 4. Gain an appreciation for art of the past as well as art of other cultures. 5. Develop skills to work in collaboration with small groups of peers.

14. Notes Please turn off all cell phones during class, interruptions will not be tolerated. No food consumption in the classroom. Bottled water with a sealable top is acceptable.

15. Plagiarism/Academic Dishonestly There are just a few writing and research projects in this class. It is in your best interest to write in your own words. Plagiarism or cheating will be recorded and an incident report will be filed. Students found plagiarizing or cheating will also receive a zero on the project which could cause failure in the class and/or suspension or dismissal from the college.

16. NOTICE to the Students Instructional use of nude images will be used during class. Images of the human form are used to assist in student instruction. It is the opinion and policy of the Art and Communications Department that the study of nude images is an essential component of this course. If any student objects or would be offended by the use of nude human images, the Art and Communications Department respectfully asks that the student consider changing his/her course selection. For policy, instructional, and cost reasons, the Department is unable to provide alternative courses.
