Kawasaki disease is an acute febrile vasculitic syndrome that primarily affects children under 5 years old. It was first described in 1967 and is most common in East Asia. While the exact cause is unknown, it is believed not to be hereditary or contagious. Symptoms include fever for at least 5 days along with red eyes, rash, cracked lips/tongue, swollen hands/feet and lymph nodes. Treatment involves hospitalization, aspirin and intravenous gamma globulin to prevent complications like heart disease. Most children recover fully within weeks.
