Political Analysis is the official journal of the Society for Political Methodology. It publishes quantitative and qualitative political methodology articles. Until 2012, data sharing policies were voluntary or lacked verification. Now, authors must upload data and code to the journal's Dataverse before publication. There has been 100% compliance, with over 15,000 downloads of the 241 replication datasets. Issues include occasional missing files or personal information in initial submissions, and the replication review occurring outside the journal management system. The publisher is working to integrate Dataverse access directly into the system.

Data Stories: Using Narratives to Reflect on a Data Purchase Pilot Program

The Ohio State University Libraries, driven by campus demand, developed and implemented a data resource purchase pilot program that took place over one fiscal year. Having previously only prioritized the purchasing of subject-related data resources on a small scale, this initiative included large data resources, most of which can meet the research and teaching needs of a variety of academic disciplines. Beginning the pilot with very few criteria for selection and potential acquisition, the Collections Strategist and Electronic Resources Officer encountered various challenges along with way, each requiring additional exploration, research, and eventual resolution. As the pilot program proceeded, other criteria emerged as important considerations when examining data resources, particularly for content and licensing.
To best develop an understanding of what was learned over the year of this pilot program, the Collections Strategist and Electronic Resources Officer collaborated in writing "data stories," or narratives about each of the data resource options investigated for acquisition. Each narrative is structured similarly, from the requestor and initial stated need through the end result. Any pertinent details regarding content, access, or licensing were incorporated to complete the narratives. The data stories will be further analyzed to track commonalities among both the successful and unsuccessful acquisitions, with the proposed outcome of developing tested criteria for future acquisition of data resources.

Jean-Claude Bradley had an incredible passion for providing open science tools and data to the community. He had boundless energy, no shortage of ideas and ran so many projects in parallel that it was often difficult to keep up. But at RSC we tried. We provided access to our data, our application programming interfaces and lots of our out-of-hours time to help turn his vision into reality. As a result we helped in the delivery of the SpectralGame to help people learn about NMR and we supported the integration of our services into GoogleDocs underpinning the management and curation of physicochemical property data. We tweaked a number of our services based on JC’s input and as a result we have ended up with a suite of capabilities that serve many of our existing efforts to integrate to electronic lab notebooks and support the ongoing shift towards Open Chemistry. JC was very much ahead of his time….and we were glad to have supported his work. This presentation will give a snapshot of some of the work we did to support his vision. Repositories are responsible for maintaining identifier persistence and researchers should treat data as first-class objects in the scholarly process. Following these guidelines would radically improve transparency and enable both humans and machines to access and interpret cited data.

DataTags: Sharing Privacy Sensitive Data by Michael Bar-sinai
The DataTags framework makes it easy for data producers to deposit, data publishers to store and distribute, and data users to access and use datasets containing confidential information, in a standardized and responsible way. The talk will first introduce the concepts and tools behind DataTags, and then focus on the user-facing component of the system - Tagging Server (available today at datatags.org). We will conclude by describing how future versions of Dataverse will use DataTags to automatically handle sensitive datasets, that can only be shared under some restrictions.

Persistent identifiers (Pids) provide machine-actionable links to data and metadata that are vital to APIs (application programming interfaces) for publishing and citation. APIs are essentially request/response patterns that use Pids to reference things and metadata to describe not only the things themselves, but also any actions requested or taken. As a result, metadata design and standardization is wedded to API design and enhancement. With Pids as nouns and metadata as adjectives and qualifiers, Pid services play a key role in API implementation.

Scholars Portal, a program of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL), provides the technical infrastructure to store, preserve, and provide access to shared digital library collections in Ontario - including hosting a local instance of Dataverse since 2011. This document proposes a method to quantify the political leaning of Twitter users based on their tweet and retweet activity. It formulates the inference of political leaning as a convex optimization problem that incorporates two ideas: (1) a user's tweets and retweets should be consistent in sentiment, and (2) similar users tend to be retweeted by similar audiences. The method is evaluated on 119 million election-related tweets from the 2012 US presidential election and achieves 94% accuracy in classifying frequently retweeted sources. A quantitative analysis of the tweets also finds that parody accounts and less vocal users are more likely to be liberal, while hashtags usage changes significantly with political events.

This document proposes a method to quantify the political leaning of Twitter users based on their tweet and retweet activity. It formulates the inference of political leaning as a convex optimization problem that incorporates two ideas: (1) a user's tweets and retweets should be consistent in sentiment, and (2) similar users tend to be retweeted by similar audiences. The method is evaluated on 119 million election-related tweets from the 2012 US presidential election and achieves 94% accuracy in classifying frequently retweeted sources. A quantitative analysis of the tweets also finds that parody accounts and less vocal users are more likely to be liberal, while hashtags usage changes significantly with political events.

iRODS/Dataverse Project by Jonathan Crabtree
This document outlines a project between the Odum Institute and IQSS Dataverse team to integrate the Dataverse data repository system with iRODS, an open source data management system. The goals are to expand storage options for Dataverse, integrate curation workflows, and connect Dataverse to national research data infrastructure. A prototype will be developed to enable automated ingest of data from Dataverse to iRODS using rules and APIs. Challenges include migrating both systems to newer versions while maintaining authentication between them. An initial prototype is expected in August 2015.

The DataTags framework makes it easy for data producers to deposit, data publishers to store and distribute, and data users to access and use datasets containing confidential information, in a standardized and responsible way. The talk will first introduce the concepts and tools behind DataTags, and then focus on the user-facing component of the system - Tagging Server (available today at datatags.org). We will conclude by describing how future versions of Dataverse will use DataTags to automatically handle sensitive datasets, that can only be shared under some restrictions.

The CLIO INFRA project (http://www.clio-infra.eu) hosted at the International Institute of Social History (IISH, http://www.socialhistory.org) integrates a number of data(hubs) on global social, economic and institutional indicators over the past five centuries. Considering a switch to Dataverse, the IISH is currently developing visualization tools that fit on top of Dataverse, especially historical maps with temporally accurate borders, such as provided in the NLGIS (http://nlgis.nl), Labour conflicts (http://laborconflicts.socialhistory.org) projects.
This talk will introduce the Dataverse widget developed to extract, transform and load data from datasets storage to platform independent internal data warehouses with possibilities to validate and check the quality of research datasets.

TwoRavens is a gesture-based web application that allows users to easily explore, analyze, and conduct interactive statistical modeling on tabular data files stored in Harvard's Dataverse, which contains nearly 25,000 datasets. It provides easy access to descriptive statistics and uses a directed graph interface for statistical modeling. The application is browser-based, device independent, and does not require any statistical expertise. Future directions include automated statistical model selection, accumulating user results, and an interface for curator privacy models.

It would be useful to be able to discover what kinds of data are contained in the myriad general-purpose public data repositories. It would be even better if it were possible to query that data and/or have that data conform to a particular context-dependent data format. This was the ambition of the Data FAIRport project. I will be demonstrating the "strawman" demonstration of a fully-functional Data FAIRport, where the meta/data in a public repository can be "projected" into one of a number of different context-dependent formats, such that it can be cross-queried in combination with the (potentially "projected") data from other repositories.
Contributing Code to Dataverse by Gustavo Durand
Dataverse is an open source data repository platform built using Java and Java EE technologies like JSF, EJB, and JPA. It uses PostgreSQL for the database, Solr for indexing and search, and supports file storage on the file system with plans to abstract this. Developers can contribute code through GitHub pull requests following an agile development process. The architecture includes models for datasets, fields, permissions, and APIs. Third party plugins can integrate with Dataverse through its APIs for search, data access, deposit, and administration.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is

Overview of Political Analysis • Political Analysis is the official journal of the Society for Political Methodology • We publish articles that provide original and significant advances in the general area of political methodology, including both quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches. • Editor-in-Chief: R. History of Replication at Political Analysis • 2000 to 2010: The journal essentially had a voluntary data accessibility and replication policy. • 2010 to 2012: Authors were suppose to provide a DOI for their data, but there was no independent verification. • 2012 to Present: Authors are required to upload their data and code to the journal’s Dataverse before any accepted article can be moved to production and these materials’ DOI must cited in the manuscript’s references. A research assistant and an editor verify the replication materials. 3
- 4. Political Analysis Dataverse 4 • Since mandating replication we have had 100% compliance. • Currently, there are 241 replication datasets in our Dataverse. • These materials have been downloaded more than 15,000 times.
- 5. Issues with Replication at Political Analysis • As noted, no author has refused to provide replication materials. • We occasionally find missing files or unnecessary personal identifying information in datasets in our review. These are typically easily fixed. • Central problem is that replication review happens outside of our journal management system, ScholarOne. This makes it more time consuming and error prone. • OUP, our publisher, and ScholarOne are working with us on implementing access Dataverse via the API. 5
