Postoperative complications can range from minor issues like fatigue to life-threatening problems like blood clots. The highest risk period is 1-3 days after surgery. Complications can be general, like fever or infection, or specific to the type of procedure. Common general issues include wound infections, blood clots, collapsed lungs, and kidney problems. Without treatment, some complications can lead to serious problems or even death. Close monitoring in the first few days after surgery can help address potential complications early.
1. Carcinoma of the oral cavity is most commonly found on the tongue, floor of mouth, and lips. It spreads locally and via lymphatics, most often to cervical lymph nodes. Distant metastases occur in 15-20% of cases, most commonly to lungs.
2. Diagnosis involves history, physical exam, biopsy of the lesion and lymph nodes, imaging like OPG, CT/MRI to assess bone and lymph node involvement. Staging helps determine prognosis and management.
3. Treatment involves surgery, radiation, chemotherapy depending on stage. Close surveillance is needed due to high risk of recurrence and second primary cancers.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a neuropathic facial pain condition characterized by sudden, severe, brief stabbing pains in the face that are triggered by everyday activities like eating or talking. The pain is caused by abnormalities in the trigeminal nerve that transmits sensations from the face to the brain. Carbamazepine is first-line pharmacological treatment to slow nerve signaling, providing pain relief. When medications fail to control pain, surgical options like microvascular decompression or gamma knife radiosurgery aim to decompress the trigeminal nerve from vascular compression. Proper diagnosis involves distinguishing TN from other facial pain conditions through evaluation of pain characteristics, triggers, and response to treatments.
This document provides guidance on examining swellings and lumps. It describes the key steps and characteristics to assess when examining a swelling. The examiner should first inspect the swelling to note its position and any abnormalities of the overlying skin. They then perform initial palpation to check for pulsation and tenderness. Further detailed palpation allows assessment of mobility, shape, surface, edge, consistency, ability to indent, fluctuation, temperature and size. Transillumination may also be attempted. A thorough swelling examination provides important clinical information to help determine the underlying cause.
CBCT provides high quality 3D images that allow for more accurate implant planning compared to traditional 2D radiography. It allows visualization of anatomical structures in multiple planes, and accurate measurements. While it provides more information, inexperienced clinicians may misinterpret data. CBCT is recommended for implant planning in aesthetic zones, complex cases, and when vital anatomy needs to be assessed. Virtual planning with CBCT can be used to determine grafting needs, tumor resection plans, and angled implant positions to avoid lifting sinus floors.
Management of oral cavity cancer 23072018Varshu Goel
1) Oral cavity cancers are the most common head and neck cancers, occurring mainly in older males due to tobacco use.
2) Diagnostic workup involves biopsy, imaging like CT to determine tumor extent and lymph node involvement.
3) Treatment involves surgery like wide local excision with neck dissection for early stage disease or chemoradiation for advanced stages. Reconstruction after major resections uses flaps to minimize functional deficits.
The document discusses the anatomy and pathology of the buccal mucosa and related structures. It provides details on:
- The anatomy of the buccal mucosa, muscles, nerves, blood supply, and related structures.
- Common tumors that can arise in the buccal mucosa, including carcinomas which are often associated with pre-existing leukoplakia or tobacco/betel nut use.
- Evaluation, staging, and treatment options for buccal mucosa tumors, which may involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination depending on the size, extent, and staging of the cancer.
Lip cancer is most commonly squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lower lip. Risk factors include outdoor occupations, fair skin, immunosuppression, rural areas, tobacco use, and poor oral hygiene. Treatment depends on tumor size and neck node involvement. For small T1 lesions, shave excision or vermillionectomy may be sufficient. Larger T2-T3 lesions require wide local excision. Neck management ranges from observation for cN0 to neck dissection for N+. Reconstruction uses primary closure for small defects, but larger defects require local flaps or free flaps. Prognosis is good for early T1-T2 lesions but worse for advanced T3-T4 tumors or neck
Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
SCC of the skin is a malignant tumor of keratinocytes, arising in the epidermis.
SCC usually arises in epidermal precancerous lesions and, depending on etiology and level of differentiation, varies in its aggressiveness.
The lesion is a plaque or a nodule with varying degrees of keratinization in the nodule and/or on the surface.
Thumb rule:
Undifferentiated SCC: is soft and has no hyperkeratosis;
Differentiated SCC: is hard on palpation and has hyperkeratosis.
Exposure:
Sunlight. Phototherapy, PUVA (oral psoralen + UVA). Excessive photochemotherapy can lead to promotion of SCC, particularly in patients with skin phototypes I and II or in patients with history of previous exposure to ionizing radiation or methotrexate treatment for psoriasis.
Lesions :
Indurated papule, plaque, or nodule ; adherent thick keratotic scale or hyperkeratosis ; when eroded or ulcerated, the lesion may have a crust in the center and a firm, hyperkeratotic, elevated margin
Clark levels
level I, intra-epidermal;
level II, invades papillary dermis;
level III fills papillary dermis;
level IV, invades reticular dermis;
level V, invades subcutaneous fat.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

LAS 1000 in the Field
The LAS 1000 detects snipers and other forward observers before they fire a shot. This system is ideal
for border and perimeter security as well as VIP protection details.
While most sniper detection systems are acoustic and help operators respond to a threat after it has
already inflicted damage on the unit, the LAS 1000 functions on optical principles and can therefore
pinpoint the location of a threat before it has a chance to act.
Utilizing an eye-safe laser scanner, the LAS 1000 detects lenses and reflectors in its line of site even
if these objects are covered behind bushes, windows or windshields. The detector can be handheld or
mounted on a tripod and when an optical reflector of any kind is detected, its position is marked with a
red dot visible through the eyepiece. For added situational awareness, an audio signal can also be set
to automatically activate.
Once revealed, the detected threat’s distance range vector is displayed and can be verbally dictated to
the operator. Equipped with an IR as well as a green laser illuminator, the LAS 1000 can reliably detect
snipers and other optical equipment in a variety of tactical situations.
