Strategic human resource managementHR challenge during merger,Potential chall...Md.Shakilur rahman
Katherine Montgomery is the human resources manager of a faith based hospital. She has been hearing rumors that the hospital might merge with the academic medical center, which is situated in the same city. Compared to the faith based hospital, the academic medical center is larger. It has greater number of beds i.e. 804 beds as to 658 beds, higher revenue, more number of staffs and greater research grants. The medical center is state associated and most of the employees are either union members or have civil service job protection. On the other hand, Katherine’s hospital is private and is not for profit organization and her workers have no labor union representation. To make things clear, she had spoken to a member of the human resources department in the academic medical center and that person told her that according to him/her neither of the hospitals are involved in merger negotiation and planning. However, she found out from the news that the two organizations were merging. She was upset since she knew that most of the mergers fail due to lack of communication and due to differences in corporate cultures. She is deeply saddened by the fact that the institution did not include the human resources department in the initial phase of the merger planning. According to her, the greater the involvement of the human resources department in the merger planning, the greater the chances of success of the merger. She lists down some of the challenges which the two institutions may face before, during and after the merger. She has yet to decide about the probable human resources tactics/ strategies which may help in successfully tackling the problems/ challenges faced before, during and after the merger.
