The Kali River in western India is 180km long and flows into the Arabian Sea. It supports forests and wildlife but suffers from illegal sand mining and pollution from a paper mill. A proposal to build a 7th dam was cancelled after fraudulent environmental impact assessments. The West Coast Paper Mill, operating since 1959, discharges untreated toxic effluents into the Kali, contaminating water sources and impacting community health. Despite protests, the mill plans to expand operations.
