We highlight how organizations are using Apache Kafka® as a fast, reliable event streaming platform alongside Rockset, a serverless search and analytics engine, to create stateful microservices to analyze their event streams.
In this talk, we will discuss a stateful microservices architecture, where events from multiple channels are collected and streamed into Kafka and continuously ingested into Rockset with no explicit schema or metadata specification required. Developers then use serverless compute frameworks, like AWS Lambda, in conjunction with serverless data management from Rockset to build microservices to derive insights on the data from Kafka. Organizations can leverage this pattern to support low-latency queries on event streams, providing immediate insight on their business.

The challenge with today’s “data explosion” is finding the most appropriate answer to the question, “So where do I put my data?” while avoiding the longer-term problem: data warehouses, data lakes, cloud storage, NoSQL databases, … are often the places where “big” data goes to die.
Enter Physics 101, and my corollary to Newton’s First Law of Motion:
Data in motion tends to stay in motion until it comes rest on disk. Similarly, if data is at rest, it will remain at rest until an external “force” puts it in motion again.
Data inevitably comes to rest at some point. Without “external forces”, data often gets lost or becomes stale where it lands. “Modern” architectures tend to involve data pipelines where downstream consumers of data make use of data generated upstream, often with built-for-purpose repositories at each stage. This session will explore how data that has come to rest can be put in motion again; how Kafka can keep it in motion longer; and how pipelined architectures might be created to make use of that data.

You cannot operate what you cannot measure. In this talk, I am going to present the built-in metrics framework of Kafka Streams that supports monitoring Kafka Streams applications. You will learn how to setup monitoring of metrics for your Kafka Streams applications and you will hear about the following recent improvements to the metrics framework that aim to extend and simplify monitoring. KIP-444 aims to simplify and extend the built-in metrics framework. The RocksDB metrics introduced in KIP-471 and KIP-607 allow you to look directly into the built-in persistent state stores of your Kafka Streams applications. Finally, KIP-613 specifies metrics that measure end-to-end latencies in your applications. Using Kafka to stream data into TigerGraph, a distributed graph database, is a common pattern in our customers’ data architecture. In the TigerGraph database, Kafka Connect framework was used to build the native S3 data loader. In TigerGraph Cloud, we will be building native integration with many data sources such as Azure Blob Storage and Google Cloud Storage using Kafka as an integrated component for the Cloud Portal.

Enhancing Apache Kafka for Large Scale Real-Time Data Pipeline at Tencent | K...
In this session we share our experience of building a real-time data pipelines at Tencent PCG - one that handles 20 trillion daily messages with 700 clusters and 100Gb/s bursting traffic from a single app. We discuss our roadmap of enhancing Kafka to break its limits in terms of scalability, robustness and cost of operation.
We first built a proxy layer that aggregates physical clusters in a way agnostic to the clients. While this architecture solves many operational problems, it requires significant development to stay future-proof. With retrospection with our customer and careful study of the ongoing work from the community, we then designed a region federation solution in the broker layer, which allows us to deploy clusters at a much larger scale than previously possible, while at the same time providing better failure recovery and operability. We discuss how we make this development compatible with KIP-500 and KIP-405, and the two KIP (693, 694) that we submitted for discussion.

For a long time we discuss how much data we can keep in Kafka. Can we store data forever or do we remove data after a while and maybe having the history in a data lake on Object Storage or HDFS? With the advent of Tiered Storage in Confluent Enterprise Platform, storing data much longer in Kafka is much very feasible. So can we replace a traditional data lake with just Kafka? Maybe at least for the raw data? But what about accessing the data, for example using SQL?
KSQL allows for processing data in a streaming fashion using an SQL like dialect. But what about reading all data of a topic? You can reset the offset and still use KSQL. But there is another family of products, so-called query engines for Big Data. They originate from the idea of reading Big Data sources such as HDFS, object storage or HBase, using the SQL language. Presto, Apache Drill and Dremio are the most popular solutions in that space. Lately these query engines also added support for Kafka topics as a source of data. With that you can read a topic as a table and join it with information available in other data sources. The idea of course is not real-time streaming analytics but batch analytics directly on the Kafka topic, without having to store it in a big data storage.
This talk answers, how well these tools support Kafka as a data source. What serialization formats do they support? Is there some form of predicate push-down supported or do we have to always read the complete topic? How performant is a query against a topic, compared to a query against the same data sitting in HDFS or an object store? And finally, will this allow us to replace our data lake or at least part of it by Apache Kafka?

How Priceline uses Kafka Streams technology to effectively save TBs on daily licenses of our monitoring systems. Kafka Streams powers a big part of our analytics and monitoring pipelines and delivers operational metrics transformations in real time. All logs and operational metrics from all of the APIs of Priceline’s products flow into Kafka and is ingested into our Monitoring System Splunk for Alerting and Monitoring. We have now implemented data transformations, aggregations and summarizations using Kafka Streams technologies to effectively eliminate PCI/PII violations on the log data; do aggregations on metrics to avoid ingesting sub-second metrics and ingest metrics only at the granularity that we need to. We will cover the need for custom Serdes, custom partitioners, and why we don’t use the confluent registry. You will also learn how Priceline uses a self service model to configure its streams, topics and consumers using Data Collection Console, which is our UI for managing the Kafka streaming pipelines.

In this talk, I will walk through how someone can set up and run continuous SQL queries against Kafka topics utilizing Apache Flink. We will walk through creating Kafka topics, schemas, and publishing data.
We will then cover consuming Kafka data, joining Kafka topics, and inserting new events into Kafka topics as they arrive. This basic overview will show hands-on techniques, tips, and examples of how to do this.

Mainframe offloading and replacement with Apache Kafka and its ecosystem can be used to keep a more modern data store in real-time sync with the mainframe, while at the same time persisting the event data on the bus to enable microservices, and deliver the data to other systems such as data warehouses and search indexes.
This session walks through the different steps some companies are already gone through. Technical options like Change Data Capture (CDC), MQ, and third-party tools for mainframe integration, offloading and replacement are explored.

Using Kafka to stream data into TigerGraph, a distributed graph database, is a common pattern in our customers’ data architecture. In the TigerGraph database, Kafka Connect framework was used to build the native S3 data loader. In TigerGraph Cloud, we will be building native integration with many data sources such as Azure Blob Storage and Google Cloud Storage using Kafka as an integrated component for the Cloud Portal.

Enhancing Apache Kafka for Large Scale Real-Time Data Pipeline at Tencent | K...
In this session we share our experience of building a real-time data pipelines at Tencent PCG - one that handles 20 trillion daily messages with 700 clusters and 100Gb/s bursting traffic from a single app. We discuss our roadmap of enhancing Kafka to break its limits in terms of scalability, robustness and cost of operation.
We first built a proxy layer that aggregates physical clusters in a way agnostic to the clients. While this architecture solves many operational problems, it requires significant development to stay future-proof. With retrospection with our customer and careful study of the ongoing work from the community, we then designed a region federation solution in the broker layer, which allows us to deploy clusters at a much larger scale than previously possible, while at the same time providing better failure recovery and operability. We discuss how we make this development compatible with KIP-500 and KIP-405, and the two KIP (693, 694) that we submitted for discussion.

Kafka as your Data Lake - is it Feasible? (Guido Schmutz, Trivadis) Kafka Sum...
For a long time we discuss how much data we can keep in Kafka. Can we store data forever or do we remove data after a while and maybe having the history in a data lake on Object Storage or HDFS? With the advent of Tiered Storage in Confluent Enterprise Platform, storing data much longer in Kafka is much very feasible. So can we replace a traditional data lake with just Kafka? Maybe at least for the raw data? But what about accessing the data, for example using SQL?
KSQL allows for processing data in a streaming fashion using an SQL like dialect. But what about reading all data of a topic? You can reset the offset and still use KSQL. But there is another family of products, so-called query engines for Big Data. They originate from the idea of reading Big Data sources such as HDFS, object storage or HBase, using the SQL language. Presto, Apache Drill and Dremio are the most popular solutions in that space. Lately these query engines also added support for Kafka topics as a source of data. With that you can read a topic as a table and join it with information available in other data sources. The idea of course is not real-time streaming analytics but batch analytics directly on the Kafka topic, without having to store it in a big data storage.
This talk answers, how well these tools support Kafka as a data source. What serialization formats do they support? Is there some form of predicate push-down supported or do we have to always read the complete topic? How performant is a query against a topic, compared to a query against the same data sitting in HDFS or an object store? And finally, will this allow us to replace our data lake or at least part of it by Apache Kafka?

How Priceline uses Kafka Streams technology to effectively save TBs on daily licenses of our monitoring systems. Kafka Streams powers a big part of our analytics and monitoring pipelines and delivers operational metrics transformations in real time. All logs and operational metrics from all of the APIs of Priceline’s products flow into Kafka and is ingested into our Monitoring System Splunk for Alerting and Monitoring. We have now implemented data transformations, aggregations and summarizations using Kafka Streams technologies to effectively eliminate PCI/PII violations on the log data; do aggregations on metrics to avoid ingesting sub-second metrics and ingest metrics only at the granularity that we need to. We will cover the need for custom Serdes, custom partitioners, and why we don’t use the confluent registry. You will also learn how Priceline uses a self service model to configure its streams, topics and consumers using Data Collection Console, which is our UI for managing the Kafka streaming pipelines.

In my modern approach, we utilize several open-source frameworks to maximize the best features of all. We often start with Apache NiFi as the orchestrator of streams flowing into Apache Pulsar and/or Apache Kafka. From there we build streaming ETL with Apache Spark and enhance events with serverless functions for ML and enrichment. We build continuous queries against our topics with Flink SQL. We will stream data into Iceberg and other data stores.

NDC London 2017 - The Data Dichotomy- Rethinking Data and Services with Streams
When building service-based systems, we don’t generally think too much about data. If we need data from another service, we ask for it. This pattern works well for whole swathes of use cases, particularly ones where datasets are small and requirements are simple. But real business services have to join and operate on datasets from many different sources. This can be slow and cumbersome in practice.
These problems stem from an underlying dichotomy. Data systems are built to make data as accessible as possible—a mindset that focuses on getting the job done. Services, instead, focus on encapsulation—a mindset that allows independence and autonomy as we evolve and grow. But these two forces inevitably compete in most serious service-based architectures.
Ben Stopford explains why understanding and accepting this dichotomy is an important part of designing service-based systems at any significant scale. Ben looks at how companies make use of a shared, immutable sequence of records to balance data that sits inside their services with data that is shared, an approach that allows the likes of Uber, Netflix, and LinkedIn to scale to millions of events per second.
Ben concludes by examining the potential of stream processors as a mechanism for joining significant, event-driven datasets across a whole host of services and explains why stream processing provides much of the benefits of data warehousing but without the same degree of centralization.

Evolution of NRT Data Ingestion Pipeline at Trendyol
"Trendyol, Turkey's leading e-commerce company, is committed to positively impacting the lives of millions of customers. Our decision-making processes are entirely driven by data. As a data warehouse team, our primary goal is to provide accurate and up-to-date data, enabling the extraction of valuable business insights.
We utilize the benefits provided by Kafka and Kafka Connect to facilitate the transfer of data from the source to our analytical environment. We recently transitioned our Kafka Connect clusters from on-premise VMs to Kubernetes. This shift was driven by our desire to effectively manage rapid growth(marked by a growing number of producers, consumers, and daily messages), ensuring proper monitoring and consistency. Consistency is crucial, especially in instances where we employ Single Message Transforms to manipulate records like filtering based on their keys or converting a JSON Object into a JSON string.
Monitoring our cluster's health is key and we achieve this through Grafana dashboards and alerts generated through kube-state-metrics. Additionally, Kafka Connect's JMX metrics, coupled with NewRelic, are employed for comprehensive monitoring.
The session will aim to explain our approach to NRT data ingestion, outlining the role of Kafka and Kafka Connect, our transition journey to K8s, and methods employed to monitor the health of our clusters."

Exactly-once Stream Processing with Arroyo and Kafka
"Stream processing systems traditionally gave their users the choice between at least once processing and at most once processing: accepting duplicate data or missing data. But ideally we would provide exactly-once processing, where every event in the input data is represented exactly once in the output.
Kafka provides a transaction API that enables exactly-once when using Kafka as your source and sink. But this API has turned out to not be well suited for use by high level streaming systems, requiring various work arounds to still provide transactional processing.
In this talk, I’ll cover how the transaction API works, and how systems like Arroyo and Flink have used it to build exactly-once support, and how improvements to the transactional API will enable better end-to-end support for consistent stream processing."

"Real-time 24/7 monitoring and verification of massive data is challenging – even more so for the world’s second largest manufacturer of memory chips and semiconductors. Tolerance levels are incredibly small, any small defect needs to be identified and dealt with immediately. The goal of semiconductor manufacturing is to improve yield and minimize unnecessary work.
However, even with real-time data collection, the data was not easy to manipulate by users and it took many days to enable stream processing requests – limiting its usefulness and value to the business.
You’ll hear why SK hynix switched to Confluent and how we developed a self-service stream process portal on top of it. Now users have an easy-to-use service to manipulate the data they want.
Results have been impressive, stream processing requests are available the same day – previously taking 5 days! We were also able to drive down costs by 10% as stream processing requests no longer require additional hardware.

Beyond Tiered Storage: Serverless Kafka with No Local Disks
"Separation of compute and storage has become the de-facto standard in the data industry for batch processing.
The addition of tiered storage to open source Apache Kafka is the first step in bringing true separation of compute and storage to the streaming world.
In this talk, we'll discuss in technical detail how to take the concept of tiered storage to its logical extreme by building an Apache Kafka protocol compatible system that has zero local disks.
Eliminating all local disks in the system requires not only separating storage from compute, but also separating data from metadata. This is a monumental task that requires reimagining Kafka's architecture from the ground up, but the benefits are worth it.
This approach enables a stateless, elastic, and serverless deployment model that minimizes operational overhead and also drives inter-zone networking costs to almost zero."

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
