- The aim of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of snoezelen. In this presentation I will address the following research questions: First:
- One of the new developments within tailored interventions is a personal website. For instance this one, which is developed by the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in the Netherlands. This hospital is specialized in the treatment of cancer patients and they developed their website for lung patients. These patients get a login name and a password, which give them access to the website. On the website they find for instance information about the diagnostic tests or treatments they will receive. The Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital asked us to judge their website, so we did a short pilot study and asked 25 people for their opinion. They perceived the content of the website as rather complex and they noticed that afbeeldingen like photograps and pictures were lacking.
- We therefore decided to conduct an experiment, using a 2x3 design. We used a sreenshot of a website text with information on lung surgeries like wedge and segment resection. 200 respondents were randomly by the computer exposed to a website in which language complexity and afbeeldingen were manipulated. So the first three groups were exposed to a website with the original text, which was considered as complex. This text was either combined with no visuals, with a prhotograph of with a drawing. The last three groups were exposed to a website with non complex language, again combined with no afbeeldingen, a photo or a picture. We pre-tested all conditions and a manipulation check revealed that the manipulation succeeded.
- Here, you see condition 5, which is the non-complex language condition with a photograph.
- This is an example of the non complex language condition combined with a picture. The subjects could look at the website as long as they wanted and the time spent reading the website was measured and controlled for.
- After watching the website, they were exposed to measurements on recall of information. These concerned 5 open-ended questions. The answers on these questions were judged by the researchers using a marking sustem that was developed at forehand. After that, they were exposed again to the website and they received questions about their satisfaction with the website. We used a subscale on the clearness or readibility of the website and one on the attractiveness
- So language complexity seems to be more decisive that visuals when it comes to recall of information, as is clearly shown on this graph. Difference between non complex with photo and complex without afbeeldingen is significant (p=.004). Difference between non complex with photo and complex with photo or picture is marginally significant (p<.10). Difference between non complex with picture and complex without afbeeldingen is marginally significant (p<.10)
- In addition, we explored age-effects. We found that younger people give almost the same score on clearness to a website with or without visuals, but older people perceive a website with a visual as more clear.
- The same counts for satisfaction with attractiveness. There is a significant interaction effect between age and the use of visuals, indicating that visuals are more decisive for older people than for younger people when they judge attractiveness
- Post-hoc analyses revealed that recall is partly mediated by satisfaction with clearness and there is a significant relation between satisfaction with clearness and recall of information.
