EPWORTH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH’S HISTORY
Massillon, Ohio
175th Anniversary “SEPTAQUINTAQUINQUECENTENNIAL”
(Septa-Quinta-Quinque-Centenial)
(according to Emerson A. Paulus, Epworth UM Historian)
No matter how you say it—175th
Anniversary is truly a major milestone on the journey of the life, mission and
ministry of Epworth United Methodist Church in Massillon, Ohio. If we are to fully understand and appreciate
Epworth UMC we need to know a little about the community in which it was founded—West Brookfield,
(Massillon) Ohio.
As we heard from Margy Vogt on May 21st
it was Judge William Henry, a prominent Methodist Layperson,
who owned much of the land and who was responsible for the establishment of the city of West Brookfield; lo-
cated on the West side of the Tuscarawas River. He lost the battle to establish the Canal on the West bank of
the Tuscarawas.
The town of West Brookfield flourished as a stopping place for people coming and going to the canal. And
some of the businesses were very busy taverns.
William Henry’s home was a 14 room home built at what is now 3242 Lincoln Way West. The second floor
was filled with tables and chairs and became the early meeting place of Methodists in that area. We are told
that a number of famous people stopped there, including William Henry Harrison, who became president of the
United States in 1840. William Henry was the great-grandfather of the wife of President Herbert Hoover, Lou
Henry Hoover.
The property 3061 Lincoln Way West, has been the home of Epworth UMN since it was established. The prop-
erty was purchased in 1841, by Henry Doxsee another original settler. Reverend A. S. Bissel of the Dalton Cir-
cuit appointed a building committee with William Henry, Andrew Sponseler and Michael Slusser serving as
members. They built a building 40 feet by 80 feet without a basement. The church was dedicated December
24, 1842 and was completed in 1843. People contributed their offerings ranging from 12 ½ cents to $100.00
when requested.
Epworth was served by various circuit riding preachers until 1895. And Emerson Paulus, (who was the church
Historian from whom much of this was gathered) stated that there was an EUB church on the East side of the
property and a Lutheran church on the West side. The EUB church became a part of Epworth and the Lutheran
congregation moved further West beyond the city limits.
As we celebrate this milestone may we continue with the dedication of our founders in serv-
ing the surrounding community. (More History to come….by Pastor Les and oth-
ers)
