Octavius and Antony's armies defeat the forces of Brutus and Cassius at the Battle of Phillipi. During the battle, Cassius believes Titinius has been captured by the enemy and asks Pindarus to kill him. When Titinius returns, he commits suicide upon seeing Cassius dead. Brutus continues fighting but is eventually left with only a few remaining allies. Unable to be captured, Brutus asks several men to kill him but they refuse. Strato finally agrees to hold Brutus' sword so that he can run onto it and take his own life, avenging Caesar.

2. Overview
• Brutus and Cassius advance towards Phillipi to face
Octavius and Antony's army
• Antony thinks that Brutus and Cassius's army is only
advancing towards them to show bravery
• A messenger comes to Octavius and Antony to inform
them that Brutus and Cassius are ready for battle
• Brutus and Cassius insult Octavius and Antony before
they battle
• Octavius tells his enemy to start the battle already

3. OVERVIEW
• The four of them goes off to their battle stations
• Meanwhile, Brutus and Cassius say their last
goodbyes to each other
• Both forces signal the beginning of their battle on
Phillipi
• Antony's forces defeat Cassius’
• Cassius asks Titinius to check if the incoming
army is that of theirs or the enemy's
• Titinius leaves while Cassius asks Pindarus to
check on Titinius

4. Overview
• Pindarus tells Cassius that Titinius is captured
• Cassius then asks Pindarus to kill him
• Pindarus does so and Cassius dies
• Titinius, having been mistaken to be captured,
sees Cassius dead, and kills himself too
• The battle continues. Cato, Brutus' brother-in-law,
dies while Lucilius is captured
• Lucilius tells Antony that Brutus will not allow
himself to be captured by them
• Brutus is left with his remaining allies

5. Overview
• He asks Dardanius, Clitus, and Volumnius to
kill him. All of them refuse
• Strato, being asleep when the three left, is
asked by Brutus to hold the sword while he
runs through it
• Strato follows and Brutus dies. Brutus' last
word was that Caesar's spirit has been avenged

6. • Antony praises Brutus, calling him the only
honest noble among the conspirators for he is
the only one who wished for Rome's welfare
when he killed Caesar
• Octavius orders to take Brutus to his tent so
that he can be given a proper funeral
• Both leave to decide which of their men
deserve an award

8. OCtavius
• Mark Antony's ally
• Adopted son of Caesar
• Did not fully “adore” Brutus
• Quarrelled with Mark Antony as to who gets
the right side of the battle field

9. Antony
• Octavius’ ally
• Follower of Caesar
• Honoured Brutus as the only one who had the
sincere motive to kill Caesar
• Great warrior
• Really wanted to avenge Caesar‘s death

10. Brutus
• Wanted the good of the whole of Rome
• The only one who killed Caesar for the sake of
Rome
• Subconsciously leading his army to defeat to
acquire “punishment” for killing Caesar
• Desired death at the hands of his ally
• Saw everyone's death as “atonement” for the sins
they've committed
• Relates everything to Caesar's ghost

11. Cassius
• Killed Caesar because of jealousy and greed
• Tried to “manipulate” Brutus' mind with
flattery
• Killed himself because he sensed that they
were losing
• In my opinion, used Titinius as an excuse to
die

12. Lucilius
• Was loyal to Brutus
• Pretended to be Brutus so that Brutus could
escape
• Had strong faith in Brutus
• Even when Brutus died, Lucilius praised him

13. Titinius
• Was loyal to Cassius
• Cassius' dear friend
• Followed all of Cassius' orders
• Committed suicide when he saw Cassius dead

14. Pindarus
• Was loyal to Cassius
• Mistaken Titinius to be captured
• Caused Cassius' death

15. Strato
• One of Brutus' remaining followers
• Obeyed Brutus when he asked for death
• Eventually was the one who “killed” Brutus

16. ANALYSIS on
the events

17. • Octavius and Antony start to prepare for
battle but had a little quarrel among them to
where the should go.
• Even though Antony was an experienced
soldier because Octavius was gaining power
because he was the chosen successor, being
the adopted son.

18. • After discussing where they will go in their
position the four leaders meet and started
exchanging insults.
• This showed that words and swords can both
cause harm to a person.

19. • SUPERSTITION & FORSHADOWING
– Cassius explain to Messala that there were two
eagles with them the day before the battle. On
the day of the battle, these two eagles were
replaced by legion of ravens and other scavenger
birds
– This was a foreshadowing that nothing much good
was going to happen to the group of Brutus and
Cassius

20. • DEDICATION
– Pindarus was a very loyal slave to Cassius
– He was very miserable when he had to kill his own
master
– Titinius was a very good friend to Cassius
– When he found out that he had died because they
misinterprted what he was doing he killed himself

21. • MISINTERPRTATION
– The death of Cassius was another instance of
misinterpretation
– Here applies the Filipino saying that “Maraming
namamatay sa maling akala.”
– His death was “cheapen” because he used Titinius
death as an exuce.

22. • SIMBOLISM
– Cassius was killed with the same sword that he
used to kill Julius Caesar
– This symbolized that Caesar even working beyond
the grave and that Caesar was already slowly
being avenged
– Cassius’s last words are that Caesar has now been
revenged by the very sword that killed him.

23. • DEDICATION
– Licillius was a very loyal friend to Brutus
– He shields Brutus from getting killed by
pretending to be Brutus while the real Brutus flees
to a different place

24. • Brutus preserves his noble bravery by acting calm
even as they were being defeated by the armies
of Octavius and Antony
• This showed how different he was from Cassius
who died cowardly because of a ”captured
friend”
• Antony and Octacius saw what Brutus had done
and said that he was the only that had the pure
motive of all the conspirators. Making him the
hero of the tragedy.

25. • DEDICATION
– The three, Dardanius Clitus and Voluminus were
very dedicated to Caesar that they didn’t want to
kill him
– But also because of Strato’s dedication to Brutus
then agrees to hold the sword for him

26. • SYMBOLISM
– The death of Brutus symbolized that the death of
Caesar has been fully avenged
– He continues to have conflict with himself saying
that he had done was to bless the people
