Jules Rimet, born in 1874 in France, was an excellent student who preferred athletics to football. After working in business and charities, he fought in World War I and became a pacifist with a vision for an international football tournament. In 1921, he became president of FIFA and organized the first World Cup in 1930 with 13 teams. The trophy was later named after him in recognition of his role in founding the tournament and 25 years leading FIFA.
