This tour is about how African American school children gained the right to receive an equal education too. First, students are introduced to the concepts of slavery, the Underground Railroad, and the Civil War. Next, students are introduced to the Jim Crow Era and segregation. Finally, students are introduced to segregation cases, the demolishing of Jim Crow laws, and integration.

2. INTRODUCTION TO SLAVERY
• The Kidnapping
In 1916 African families and
their children who lived freely in their
own country were kidnapped from
their villages.
• The Voyage
After being kidnapped the
once free African men, women ,
and children were forced to board
ships that took them on a long harsh
and grueling voyage to America.

3. INTRODUCTION TO SLAVERY
CONTINUED
• The Auction
Once in America the kidnapped
Africans including the children were sold on
the auction block. They were then the
property of white men who became their
owners and masters.
• Enslavement
The masters forced the kidnapped
Africans into harsh, cruel, and degrading
lives. Enslavement meant that the slaves
including the children worked long hard
days without pay. Many slaves worked in
the fields taking care of the crops. Some
worked in the master’s house doing all the
cooking, cleaning, and caring of the
master’s children.

4. UNDERGROUND RAILROAD
Slaves were punished harshly for not
following the master’s orders, rules, and
wishes. They were beaten, killed, and often
sold off to another owner for their
disobedience.
Some slaves decided that they would
rather try to escape from the harsh life of
slavery through the Underground Railroad.

5. CIVIL WAR
• In 1861 an Civil War was fought on
American soil. One of the major causes
of the war was the abolishment of
slavery. Explore the map of the Civil
War to find the Union and Confederate
states. List five Union states and five
Confederate states. Explain the
difference between the Union and the
Confederate states. When and why did
West Virginia become a state? What
side of the war was West Virginia on?

6. EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION
In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln
signed a document called the
Emancipation Proclamation. This
document ended slavery and freed
the slaves.

• Although slavery ended in 1863, Jim
Crow Laws prevented African
Americans from experiencing true
freedom and equal rights.

9. BROWN VS. BOARD OF
EDUCATION
• The 1954 Brown vs. Board of
Education landmark ruling by the
Supreme Court became one of the
biggest game changers in the
desegregation for African American
students across America.
