The Economic Benefits Of Economic Welfare Essay
Economic welfare is defined as the well being or standard of living of an individual or individuals
taking part in an economy (Business Dictionary, 2015). This can be measured through statistics
such as individual income, health care expense, educational achievement and opportunity for
economic growth. The better one fares among these categories, the more likely one is to have a
higher standard of living and possess an inherent socio economic advantage. Currently, the
aboriginal population scores poorly across all of these standards. Despite governmentincentives, the
average indigenous person is born into an economic disadvantage with little room for vertical
movement, indicating a need for major social and legislative change.
Among the aboriginal population in 2005, 18.7% of individuals living with family were below the
poverty line. Unattached, or single, individuals were even more likely to fall into this low income
bracket at 42.8%. Conversely, these rates among the non aboriginal population were 8.4% and
28.0% respectively (Collin Jensen, 2009). These numbers highlight the economic disparity
Aboriginals face, the cause of which lies rooted in their historical mistreatment. To better
understand the situation today and how it came to be, one must begin by looking at early Canadian
policy involving Aboriginals.
The first important document concerned with indigenous rights was the Royal Proclamation.
Signed in 1763, it recognized the sovereignty of the aboriginal

Compare And Contrast Child Care Practices In Austria Vs Usa
Childcare Practices in Austria vs. USA Nurseries in Austria are tailored specifically for children
up to the age of three. A group of four school employees usually take care of about 15 children. In
Vienna alone, there are 549 nurseries taking care of 5000 children. Once your child reaches the age
of three, they graduate into kindergarten, then they go on to primary schoolat the age of six. In the
nurseries, children are taught physical activities and cultural practices, and they are first
introduced to the English language and computers. In kindergarten, there are twenty five children
per group. After school services are typically found nearby primary schools. There, the staff
concentrates on various activities, including homework (Practical Life in Vienna). Similarities in
childcare practices in Austria vs. the USA include how informal babysitting is. It is done on an
informal basis in both countries (Practical Life in Vienna). They both offer childcare facilities for
working parents, and both are equally expensive at the preschool level and below. Both countries
have nannies for more wealthy families to hire to help take care of their children while they are
away at work (Childcare in the US).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Horrors of the Jewish Holocaust
What if there was a choice on whether to be Jewish or Non Jewish, to either be Jewish and fight
back or to go with the flow, and to be Non Jewish and fight back or go with the flow? Being non
jewish and going with the flow would be the smart choice, if survival is the goal. In that time
period being Jewish was awful. Being Jewish basically meant you were an outcast. During the
Holocaustit would have been better to not be Jewish and to stay out of the way, or go with the flow.
Even though being Non Jewish and not fighting back is the easiest way to go, being Non Jewish
and fighting back is the most sincere thing to do. Fighting back is a great thing to do too. If the
Non Jewish people are fighting back they could be saving peoples lives which is great; however,
taking the risk of fighting back can affect more than just one person. Sure if the Non Jewish
people are fighting back they could be helping the Jewish people which is a great thing. If your
Non Jewish and fighting back then they could also be considered heroes in the long run, and
maybe could convince the Nazis to stop harming the Jewish people. There is always a possibility
that if the Jewish people would have fought back that maybe the black and white issue would not
have happened. Yes, fighting back is the most sincere thing to do, but if survival is the key then
fighting back shouldn t be done.
Staying out of the way and not making more problems is honestly the smart thing to do. Simply
going with the flow is

Film Analysis Of The Film Edward Scissor Hands
Essay
The film Edward Scissor Hands by Tim Burton is seen as a modern day fairytale with the story of
a young man being pulled out of a solitary life into a large town that has a very social community.
When you look closely at the film you can see that it has many deeper meanings and emotions that
are displayed themes throughout the film, some of these are: appearance vs reality, Conformity
/sameness and Self discovery.
Throughout this film we see the theme appearance vs reality which is shown many times. For
example, at the start of the movie we see the mansion which makes the film look like a horror film
but when you see it you are surprised since it has a big colorful well kept garden and it makes it
look a lot less intimidating. The most noticeable example of this theme is Edward, when you
first get a glimpse of Edward we see him in a dark corner inside his mansion. He is spotted by
peg who is trying to sell make when she first sees him she doesn t feel threatened by him, then
she sees that he has a lot of features that make him look like a dangerous person some of these
are, sharp scissors/blades as hands, scars on his face, pale skin and dark clothes with black untidy
hair, when she sees these she tries to leave the mansion but Edward tells her not to go.
Peg Boggs: Why are you hiding back there? You don t have to hide from me I m Peg Boggs, your
local Avon representative and I m as harmless as cherry pie...

Discuss The Impact Of Globalization On American Football
Globalization has long been attributed as one of the main factors contributing to the overwhelming
popularity of football around the world. Through this process of global diffusion, football has
managed to reach across borders and cultures to amass an astounding 3.5 billion fans from all over
the world (McGowan). Globalization has also provided football with another gift: migration. This
particular effect is highlighted in European football with the rise of increasingly diverse national
teams. Immigration in Europe has always been substantial, but after World War II many Western
European countries saw an increase of people crossing their borders. Migrations to various
European countries have continued to rise exponentially in the 21st century... Show more content on

There was a definite loss of identity as Germans tried to move on from the war. The rebuilding
process was not going to be easy. And as history had it, it took a miracle for the German people to
finally be able to claim a new national identity. The West Germanynational team s win in the 1984
World Cup was the start of a new era for the German people, it mark[ed] the beginning of Germany s
rebirth as a gradually more self confident nation... (Krauss 3). Thus their national team became their
new source of national vitality and symbol of strength. When Germany became officially reunited
in 1990, the West German national team had just won another World Cup months before, marking a
historic moment in Germany with another, and strengthening the connection between football and
Germany. This is still true today, but the team that won the country s first World Cup and the team
that won their most recent 2014 World Cup could not be more different. That squad boasted an
impressive selection of foreign heritage players. Among them were Mesut Г–zil (Turkey),
JГ©rГґme Boateng (Ghana), Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose (Poland), Shkodran Mustafi
(Albania), and Sami Khedira (Tunisia). The demographic changes in Germany that have been
happening for a while have finally achieved representation at the highest level of German society.

Gender Roles In Rebecca Solnit s Cassandra Amongst The...
Hysteria derives from the greek work uterus. That notion refers to women everywhere having to
live by the myth of gender roles. Most of the time these stereotypes turn into name calling which
result in a harassment of words sticking long enough to the point where it s deemed as normal. The
significance of that myth by people who endure verbal attacks correlates to how the rest of the
crowd then perceives the judged. The consequences that follow are in the form of reputation
creating these social norms that are unfair. In the tale Cassandra Amongst the Creeps, author
Rebecca Solnit exemplifies the topic of how myths create social norms with the setting stone story
of the goddess denying a Gods sexual request. As a result the curse of disbelief and tainted
credibility of women was made normal as that myth stayed alive throughout history even to this day.
In conjunction to Solnit, Lauren Holmes author of Barbara the Slut exhibits the modern setting of a
high schoolto portray how impactful perceptionand credibility derived from that myth are. Both
authors entertain how certain attitudes perpetuate future problems that can destroy characters
esteem. Barbara s scarred credibility was in result of other people s false conscious of her
character. Barbara the Slut s story represents the meaning of Solnit s belief of myth changing reality
by exhibiting how women s sexuality is tied to perception, and how that perception changes
individual s credibility and reputation.

Four Signs Of Groupthink
Groupthink is a theory of social interaction involved with methods of group decision making,
originally developed by Irving Janis, a social psychologist, in 1972 (Communication Theory).
Groupthink was initially described by Janis as the thought processes of people engaged in group
decision making with a deep desire to conform to in group members гѓјrequiring extreme loyalty to
group values and the exclusion of those deemed part of an out group . In situations when groupthink
occurs, the need for members of the group discussion to conform their ideas to those of the group
overpowers the individual s need to evaluate group choices critically, whether or not one fully
agrees or supports an alternative answer (Psychology Today). There inlies danger... Show more

The first of these signs of groupthink named Out , due to the nature of the phenomenon, arises
when people disagree with majority consensus receive accusations of doing so purposefully,
resulting in conflict from the argumentative nature of the situation (Janis). This ties into the Direct
Pressure on Dissenters trait, which details how group members will threaten/ put pressure on those
expressing opposition to majority opinion to persuade them not to contradict the expectations of the
group. This then leads into the next phenomenon of groupthink called Self Censorship . Self
Censorship, produced by pressures to conform, explains that, when a member believes they are the
only person who has a certain belief, they self censor for fear of being outcast from the group.
Instead of speaking out, they keep their thoughts hidden from othersгѓјnot wanting to be a dissenter
or seen as disagreeable. Because of Self Censorship, the next symptom of groupthink, Illusions of
Unanimity , emerges. Illusions of Unanimity describes when a member silences their own voice, so
the group infers that the person agrees, even if this is

Economic Inequality And Its Effects On Economic Growth
The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer is an aphorism elicited from the topic of economic
inequality. Over the past decades, economic inequality has been rising and at an increasing rate,
expanding the gap between the rich and the poor. The direct relationship between inequality and
poverty has shown that while inequality increases, so too does poverty. Increased inequality is
harmful for economic growth and its effects also bear social implications. Although there are
arguments on the consequences of wealth redistribution and its unintended impact on economic
growth, wealth should be redistributed to reduce inequality and poverty, sequentially leading to
more economic development and a higher standard of living for society.
Economic inequality occurs in two forms: income inequality and wealth inequality. There remains
a dispute between whether income inequality or wealth inequality should be the focus to
reducing economic inequality. Considerable attention has been given to income disparities,
however, it is important to realize that simply addressing income inequality will not adequately
address the gross disparity between the poor and the ultra rich. For example, Bill Gates is
estimated to earn around $7 billion per year (estimates vary wildly depending on how his income
is calculated). However, even if this income was taxed at 100%, Gates would still have in excess
of $70 billion in accumulated wealth. Gates could continue spending a million dollars per day,

Religion s Role In Puritan Society
Puritan society was very different to our way of life today. They wanted to live the purest life
possible. Their beliefs and values had a major impact on how they lived and governed their people.
They took criminal matters very seriously, and their punishments were brutal enough to make one
regret their actions. Actions considered almost normal to us today, such as skipping out on church,
public displays of affection, were considered crimes in the PuritanSociety. Punishments for these
actions ranged from public humiliation, to death by hanging.
Crime could be found in every aspect of Puritan life. Religion played a major part in Puritan society.

The Differences Between The Arab People Of Arabia And...
Culture in Syria With the United States being involved in Iraq and Afghanistan, we as soldiers
learn a completely new type of culture. We also know that in each of the two countries that their
way of living is different from each other even though their religion is same. This is true throughout
the world and that is what makes it hard for one to understand why there cannot be more cohesion
between countries. The same true of Syria. The way they live day to day and worship is different
from either of the other two countries, despite that they are an Islamic country. The Syrian people
are different in the approach to people, economy, government, and cultural life.
Ethnic and Linguistic The people of Syria draw their influence from several origins over a long
period. The Greeks and Romans ethnic influence was negligible. The people of Arabia and
Mesopotamia left their influence on what we see today. Even though the Turks, Greeks, and
Romans influenced the political and economic structures of Syria, they could not change in the
dominant Arab character of the Syrian people. Ninety percent of the population speaks the official
language, which is Arabic. There three other languages that are spoken in the country and they

John Stuart Mill s Final Chapter Summary
Mill begins his final chapter by trying to cover the meaning of justice, by coming up with a list
of things that are frequently classified as just or unjust. He examined what justice is and says that
it is the concept of the moral rights of an individual. He talks about so many solid examples of
injustice. Firstly, it is unjust to deprive one of his legal rights, violating one s moral rights,
everyone should receive what the deserve whether good or bad, break contracts and be partial. Mill
differentiated other outlines of moralityfrom justice through the idea of a perfect duty. Perfect
duties, are what one must always fulfil and have not choice over it, and imperfect duty is we have
a choice and just decide to help someone on our own, e.g

Porters Five Forces Of New Entrants
Porters Five Forces
Threat of New Entrants
There are barriers to entry of new firms to the fast fashion industry such as economies of scale,
product differentiation as new entrants could possibly sell a product for a low cost and resulting
low quality.
H M are in a position where they are at a medium threat as them being one of the biggest brand
within the high street and fast fashion sector, they are in a secure position where new entrants
wouldn t be able to compete to H M as quick, this is evident as H M have a strong brand presence.

Power of Suppliers
Power of the suppliers is relatively strong as they are able to sell high priced resources and
materials for instance: the price on cotton has been increasing and with organic cotton, the price
would be higher which puts the supplier at a strong powerful position or they can either sell low
quality resources and material in which retailers would purchase as costs would be very low. They
even have the power to drop out on contracts last minute if they feel like the price they are getting
paid is low, this can affect the quality of the work. Furthermore, it can raises the question of
supplying and production held in Britain. The production prices would increase but it would mean
there are chances of employment.
Suppliers are in great power over their employees, this is when ethics is involved as employee
working for the suppliers would be giving out very low wages, disrespect to employees, in which
can be covered up and ensure the brand doesn t find out. However with the power of the internet,

The Degree of Success of Reza Shah Pahlavi after the 1925 Coup
A passionate but ruthless nationalist with little formal education, Reza Khan had a clear vision for
Iran s transition to modernity often using Ataturk s Turkey as a model. Milani, Mohsen M. The
Making of Iran s Islamic Revolution.
Iran entered the interwar period in a troubled state. Iran s economy was devastated and its current
ruler Ahmad Shah seemed to have little authority over his country as it was in effect governed by
the ruling powers Britain and Russia. However in October 1917 the balance of power was altered
with the victory of the Bolsheviks in Russia, forcing them to withdraw: Britain determined to

Then, with the support of the army, the British and the ulama, Reza Khan persuaded the Majlis to
entrust the crown of the oldest monarchy on earth to (his) family [5] thus marking the beginning of
the Pahlavi dynasty.
Reza Khan, now firmly in power, began a period of rapid modernization. Modernization is defined
as the process of changing the conditions of a society by forcing them to accept many of the
attributes and conventions of the current century. This is exactly what the new shah tried to do,
however his methods proved ineffective. The shah s reforms were on numerous occasions
superficial and not successful. The shah based many of his ideals on his role model, Mustafa
Kamal Attaturk. But he was less successful than Ataturk in forging a strong national ideology
because Ataturk was able to control the mullahs and to find a place for them as well as for
merchants and intellectuals in the new Turkey. He governed as an autocrat but also as a twentieth
century politician. By contrast, Reza Shah ruled as a monarch, proving adept as centralization but
not at delegation. [6] He saw the clergy as a hindrance to his plans for modernization and did

Unique Paths to the Supreme Court Essay
Article III of the Constitution of the United States vests judicial power in one supreme Court . With
incredible adaptability, the Constitution has stood the test of time. Largely due to the limited
specificity as to the application of its words, the Constitution has allowed the character of the Court
to be historically defined by the individuals who have held the position of Chief Justice of the
United States. The ideology and individual Constitutional interpretation of each Chief Justice has
changed both the influential power and message of the Court. Earl Warren, Warren Burger, and John
G. Roberts, Jr. have all successfully been appointed to the Court as Chief Justices. And although the

It had been a long time since Warren had practiced law and he had only practiced for a short
amount of time after law school (Newton 42). During a private meeting at the McClellan Air
Force Base in California, Eisenhower s Attorney General Herbert Brownell, Jr. told Governor
Warren that President Eisenhower was going to appoint him as Solicitor General until a spot on
the Supreme Court became vacant. The President believed that service as Solicitor General
would be valuable prior to membership on the Court (Schwartz 2). Typical of standard informal
appointing procedure, Attorney General Brownell, Jr. played a large role in Warren s transition
from Governor to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. According to David O Brien in Storm
Center, Most presidents delegate responsibility to their attorneys general and close White House

days after the meeting with Attorney General Brownell, Jr., Earl Warren s future changed when
Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson died unexpectedly of a heart attack (Schwartz 3). President
Eisenhower had promised Warren the first vacant seat without expecting Chief Justice Vinson s
seat to become vacant; Eisenhower had an Associate Justice s seat in mind for Earl Warren
(Schwartz 3). While talking with President Eisenhower at a White House breakfast, Representative

There are no proven facts behind their phrase Always One of a Kind. Dr Pepper has a unique
flavor that many soft drink consumers enjoy. However, it does not change who the consumer is
as an individual or make them stand out any more than the next person drinking Dr Pepper. The
claim that Dr Pepper makes is used to persuade people to buy their product and know their own
uniqueness. From the very beginning, the Dr Pepper company states the importance of
protecting their recipe. It is said that there are two halves of the recipe. They are kept in two
different safe deposit boxes, located in two separate banks in Dallas, TX. The fact is that Dr

Gender, Contingencies of Self Worth, and Achievement Goals as Predictors of Academic Cheating
in a Controlled Laboratory Setting
Study Objective:
In this research, experimenters were curious as to see how gender differences related to cheating.
Based off this the experimenters further evaluated how competition and virtue played an affect on
how little or how much one might cheat. As noted in the title, Gender, Contingencies of Self Worth,
and Achievement Goals as Predictors of Academic Cheatingin a Controlled Laboratory Setting,
these contingencies were the focal point of this study. Studies before had been based off self report
and observation, which created a problem and produced errors as to the rate of cheating. ... Show

In this time, the confederate obtained the answer key and proceeded to copy the answers as well as
asking the participant if they wanted to cheat. If the participant rejected the offer they then asked
again. The confederate then left the classroom to use the restroom leaving the participant alone.
This allowed for them to either cheat off the confederates test or the answer key. The experimenter
returned shortly after and collected the test. Then, the participants took a short 4 question
questionnaire with open ended questions about the test. Afterwards the participants were debriefed.
The research conducted in this study was experimental. You can tell because it was in a laboratory
setting where every situation was controlled. They were searching for whether or not the
participants would cheat and manipulated the variables in a way that allowed for participants to
cheat by having the experimenter leave the classroom as well as the confederate.
Results:
After the experiment was conducted and the results analyzed the study found that 57% of the
participants showed cheating on one or more of the 5 questions that could not be solved. When is
comes to differences in gender, men were shown to have cheated more then women. But, within the
number of participants who cheated the number of questions they cheated on did differ among

Pete Rose Baseball Scandal Essay
Throughout the history of America s pastime, baseball has continually battled scandals and
controversies. From the 1919 Black Sox scandal to the current steroid debate, baseball has lived in
a century of turmoil. While many of these scandals affected multiple players and brought shame to
teams, none have affected a single player more than the 1980 s Pete Rose betting scandal. Aside
from the public humiliation he brought his family and the Cincinnati Reds, nothing has done more
to hurt Pete Rose than his lifetime ban from baseball making him ineligible for hall of fame. While
many are for and against putting Pete Rose in the hall of fame, the four ethical theories, Kantianism,

After retiring entirely from baseball both as a manager and as a player, Pete Rose was believed to
have placed bets on multiple baseball games including his Cincinnati Reds. After investigations by
Major League Baseball and the lawyer John M. Dowd, they were able to discover that Rose had
bet on multiple Reds games, but were unable to discover whether Rose had ever bet against the
Reds, like the Black Sox scandal. With the Commissioner of baseball, Bart Giamatti, pushing the
case to the federal level, Rose and Giamatti came to an agreement which included Rose s lifetime
ban from baseball. During his lifetime ban, Rose came clean stating that he did bet on the Reds
in his autobiography in 2004. Currently, Pete Rose continues to serve his lifetime ban, hoping
to one day manage another team and enter the hall of fame. Knowing that Pete Rose continues
his ban from baseball, we can begin by looking at the ethical theories which agree with keeping
Rose out of the hall of fame. Egoism, the idea of acting in manner which is best for me, is a
theory which does not lead Rose to the hall of fame. With Egoism we have to look at what is
best for the party in charge and which decision will lead to the best outcome. With the Pete Rose
case we have two parties whose ethical decisions can be evaluated, MLB and Pete Rose. Clearly
Pete Rose can be ignored in the egoistic analysis, since the decision to place him in the hall of fame

Fashion Career Purpose Essay
Growing up, I dreamt of getting a job that I enjoy so much that it would feel like I was not
working. It is imperative that the career I pursue satisfies both my internal and external needs. I do
not want to settle for anything other than a job that I love. During my junior year in high school, I
created a fashioninspired blog. Since I enjoyed watching celebrities on the red carpet, and
segments discussing trends and personal styles, I wanted a different platform where I can write
and discuss my own views. I curated a fashion inspired blog on Tumblr where I wrote pieces of
what I thought was stylish and trendy. Having a blog combined two of my greatest interests:

Having a career in the fashion industry will offer the job benefits that are essential to me. The

to take years of hard work and building up from the ground. It will be about establishing and

Before I jump straight into my career in real estate there are a few things that I am going to do. I
plan to go to graduate school to get my Masters of Business Administration. The reason that I am
going to get my MBA is because it will help me manage my brokerage when I eventually have
the funds and resources to open one, and it will also help me to appear desirable to my desired
clients, which are young professionals and business owners. I will also use my degree as a back

Analysis Of Anthem, By Ayn Rand
Is dystopian fiction, unremittingly bleak, leaving no room for hope, or is it a positive warning to
persuade us to speculate about the world that mankind has created.
On the surface, dystopian fiction is a bleak, depressing genre that offers a detailed and destructive
presentation of the very worst of social alternative , but in actuality it is a means of speculation that
reveals to the audience the real threats in society. It extrapolates contemporary socio political trends
taken into extremes , which compels its audience to re examine the values of their society, resulting
in an optimistic tale that gives the audience hope to escape their pessimistic future. Anthem by Ayn
Rand (1937) is a detailed portrait of a collectivist society overstated for the purpose of satire and
storytelling. As a politically conscious writer, Rand writes to communicate to her audience her
political perception into the destructive psychology of collectivism. This exposes the audience to
the risks of conformity, along with providing means to avoid this dystopian imagination
crystallising into reality.
Dystopias are a hyperbolic view of a familiar society s values, and assert that total control is
harmful to the individual. Anthem is a grim future Rand envisioned after experiencing first hand
the impacts of a brutal Stalinist rule . It was influenced by general socio political trend of
increasing signs of collectivism and oligarchy developing into more recent politics during the early

Perspective Of Panchali
New Perspective of Panchali in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni s The Palace of Illusion
Abstract: In The Palace of Illusion, Divakaruni portrays Panchali as a bold, powerful and
independent woman, an equal to the men and not subservient. She presents Panchali s life as a
series of choices made by her and giving her a voice in the overwhelmingly patriarchal society that
was ancient India. Divakaruni interprets the epic Mahabharat which provides a complete narrative.
She gives a stronger role to the women of the story, and portrays them as equals in society. This
paper aims at the new perspective given to Panchali by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. Draupadi has
been portrayed mostly negatively in Hindu society in India and we will fail to find girls being
named after her. Many believe that it was her headstrong actions that brought about the destruction
of the Third Age of Man. She is known to be a kritya one who brings doom to her clan. But
Divakaruni moves away from such interpretations to provide a new outlook of Panchali.
Key words: Perspective View point, Patriarchal Relating to a system run by male in society,
Subservient Submissive, Interpretation Explanation, Headstrong Determined.

in most constructions of Draupadi, in both literary and non literary texts, she is seen as a prey of
patriarchy which is perpetuated by the dominant discourses of the time. In Divakaruni s version,
Draupadi wants to be a maker of her own

Another former intern at Alexander McQueen sued the company recently for exploiting her and

In reality, the very concept of unpaid internship is faulty. To survive in expensive cities like New

while you work forty hours a week for free is both unrealistic and impractical, unless, of course if
you have the financial backing. But that means that fashion internships are just for the rich as a

The Banning Of Banning Catcher In The Rye
There are numerous banned books which are removed from shelves due to their controversial
content not only just in America but also around the world. The novel, The Catcher in the Rye,
written by J.D. Salinger is one of the most well known censored publications throughout American
schools. The novel, set in the 1950s, is narrated by a sixteen year old boy named Holden Caulfield.
The story begins in a mental hospital where Holden is undergoing treatment. From there, he tells his
account of his expulsion from school and his subsequent lonesome journey throughout New York,
all of which happened leading up to his voluntary admission into the sanitorium. Most of the novel s
adversaries argue that the book should be banned due to its vulgar content including the constant
use of profanity, the apparent thoughts of violence, and the descriptions of sexual activity. On the
contrary, I believe that this novel should not be banned because it brings attention to mental
illness. The most valid argument supporting the banning of The Catcher in the Rye is the
abundant usage of profanity. The novel is composed of a variety of negative language which
helps define Holden s character. Salinger uses multiple words with negative connotations such as:
lousy , bastard , sonuvabitch , and phony . It is no surprise that three of the top five words in The
Catcher in the Rye goddam , hell and damn are curse words... (Taylor). So, in a perfect world

Theories Of What Happened To The Dinosaurs
In this task I will be talking about What Happened to the Dinosaurs? . I will be discussing and
explaining two different theories about how the dinosaur became extinct and see what theory has
more evidence to prove that s how the dinosaurs became extinct.
My First theory is the Asteroid Impact Theory. I choose this theory because it has a lot of evidence
suggesting that this is one way that the dinosaurs became extinct. The asteroid that hit 65 million
years ago was approximately 6 15km in diameter, hit the earth with the force of five billion atomic
bombs. The crater of that asteroid was 180km in diameter, was found buried at Chicxulub in
Mexico in 1990 (Oxford Big Ideas, 2012). That Asteroid wiped out three quarters of a species of

Managing Director At Johnson Healthcare Management...
Hypothetical Scenario: I am a managing director at Johnson Healthcare Management Consulting
Firm, the premier provider for innovative solutions to performance enhancement and clinical
transformation. This firm specializes in strategies for improving the health and well being of
mentally ill adults and children with a primary focus on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD). Among the patient population seen at Mount Auburn Hospitalin Cambridge,
Massachusetts are pediatric patients in the Pediatric Associates office practice while across the
campus are adult patients being seen in the Auburn Family MedicineCenter (FMC). In both groups,
providers have observed some patient disruption in the practice waiting areas. It appears that some
parents are unable to manage the child s behavior while in the waiting area, and some adult patients
in the FMC have continued to be overly disruptive. Despite interventions by the office staff in both
clinics, the problem continues and patient satisfaction starts to erode. These physiciangroups have
solicited my assistance to determine the problem and provide recommendations to improve the
efficiency of practice operations.
The Right to Health Care

The Literature On Pay For Play
A Review of the Literature on Pay for Play in College Athletics by Sara J. Singleton
EDU 7253 Legal Environment of Higher Education
May 28, 2015
Abstract
Because of recent court cases such as O Bannon v. National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA), the issue of whether intercollegiate student athletes should be compensated for their
athletic appearances on behalf of colleges has been featured in the news and been the subject of
much scholarly writing. This literature review will focus on the major themes discussed in peer
reviewed journals and law reviews as well as the main judicial opinions on this issue to this point.
As colleges and the NCAA continue to battle over the appropriate role of profit and amateurism ...

Other themes that are pro compensation include redefining amateurism and worker s compensation
and liability issues. The fourth stream of literature focuses on various reasons that intercollegiate
athletes should not be paid to play, mostly viewpoints that consider the use of the Sherman Act
within intercollegiate athletics to be judicial overreach.
The Sherman Antitrust Act
Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act, in part, states that every contract, combination... or
conspiracy, in the restraint of trade or commerce... is declared to be illegal. (Sherman Act,
2006). This law provides a comprehensive charter of economic liberty aimed at preserving free
and unfettered competition as the rule of trade (Northern Pacific Railway Company vs. United
States, 1958; Reiter vs. Sonotone Corporation, 1979). It relies on a fundamental belief in supply
and demand (Baum Research Development Company vs. Hillerich Bradsby, 1998). There are two
main ways by which a plaintiff could challenge the NCAA s no pay rules under Section 1 of the
Sherman Act. First, the plaintiff could argue that the no pay regulations signify a type of wage
fixing that damages not only the market for the student athletes skills but also the value of college
sports as a whole. Second, the plaintiff could argue that the NCAA rules create an unlawful group
prohibition of those

Marist Poll
Poll s Main Conclusions The Marist Poll found that a majority of respondents, 52%, believe
President Trump s response to the Charlottesville attacks has not been strong enough, with 27%
disagreeing. A notable 21% are not sure. Unsurprisingly, there is a partisan split in attitudes.
Marist found that 79% of Democrats and 52% of Independents agree that Trump s response was
not strong enough. Whereas 59% of Republicans believe his response was strong enough. A
majority of Democrats (73%) and Independents (47%) believe race relations have gotten worse
within the past year. Only 32% of Republicans believe race relations have gotten worse in the past
year. In terms of removing confederate statues, 2/3 of Latinx and whites said the statues... Show

Firstly, in its most basic element, this survey brought key issues to the attention of the mass
public and political elites. Secondly, surveys carry the ability to create political change. Days
after public opinion showed meager approval of President Trump s initial response to the
Charlottesville attacks, Trump condemned neo Nazis and white supremacists in a statement
(Manchester 2017). For the premises given above, I find this Marist Poll survey to be
meaningful. The Charlottesville attacks will remain historically important. Polling Entity
Assessment Overall, The Marist Poll, has a respectable reputation. It was founded in 1978, and
is considered the first college based research center to include undergraduates in conducting
survey research (Marist 2017). Accordingly, Marist College places a strong emphasis on
academic led research. Several news networks such as CNN, FOX, and NBC have cited The
Marist Poll in their articles. Additionally, FiveThirtyEight has given Marist College polling an A
grade for its accuracy (Nate Silver 538). Marist does not have a history of partisan or ideological
bias. However, as with any polling entity, their results should be analyzed assiduously.
Methodology of the Poll a. The sample size of this poll is 1,125 adults and was limited to those
that reside in the United States. The margin of error is +/ 2.9 percentage points. Most political

Dog Safety Research Paper
During the winter, dog safety, and the safety of all pets, is critical. When it gets cold outside,
many pet owners are extra cautious with outdoor temperatures, bringing pets inside. Also, space
heaters and other methods of warmth are being utilized. It was estimated that about 500,000 pets
are affected yearly by home fires, and nearly 1,000 of home fires were started by our four legged
family members. While in most cases home fires are accidental, many could be prevented with a
few safety tips. In hopes that more accidental fires can be prevented.
Steps to pet proofing and preventing fires

A few simple safety measures can help you prevent fires. However, if a fire does happen there are a
few things you can do ahead of time to help your pet.
When you leave secure you pet in an area that is closest to an exit and free from hazards. While
crates will keep a pet out of trouble, they can also leave them with no way to escape if a fire
starts. If you must leave your pet created, leave them near an exit where a firefighter can quickly
get them out.
Younger pets may be more likely to get into trouble and potentially cause a fire. Leave them in an
area that is free from any fire hazards. Use a baby gate to block them from no no areas while you
are away. The same goes for cats. Since they love to jump on things and knock things over, be sure
they are not free to roam in the kitchen or other areas that may hold fire hazards.
Have your leashes near a door as well, this way a firefighter not only knows you have pets, but
can use the leash to help your pets out. You can also post a window cling for firefighters. These are
available for free through the ASPCA. This informs anyone that is entering of the animals inside as
well as how many.

Who Is The Giver Intelligent
People all over the world wish for a peaceful society, and while there is nothing wrong with this,
be careful what you wish for. A perfect society is highly unattainable and Lois Lowry s novel The
Giver depicts that. In the novel, the protagonist, Jonas, lives in a community of sameness where
people do not know what emotions are and cannot comprehend a life of vibrance, but he tries to
change that. Jonashas a very dynamic portrayal due to specific events and minor charaters.
In the beginning he is very obedient and intelligent. he rarely gets in trouble and was only
chatised twice in his life. Once for taking an apple home and another time for joking about
release. He believes in his community and follows all rules without question or concern. One can
infer that Jonas is intelligent because he is very careful about his word choice. He often corrects
his friend Asher s precision of language, and when he is anxious about the upcoming Ceremony of
Twelve he uses the word apprehesive rather than frightened. At the Ceremony, the Cheif Elder
comments on Jonas s intelligence when explaining why Jonas was selected to be the new Receiver
of Memory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Jonas recieves memories from the Giver he begins to see beyond. He comprehends colours
which cause him to think of choice. He wonders what it would be like to choose the colour of
one s tunic or one s own job. He watches the release of a newborn with the Giver, a process
performed by his father. After witnessing the footage he discovers that release means death. The
next day, Jonas s father tells the family that Gabe, a newborn living with them, is scheduled for
release. This is the last force that brings about change in Jonas s

Conservation and Preservation at the Turn of the 19th Century
Missing Works Cited
The environmentalist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries presents a picture of
America at the time: torn between the desires to expand while seeking to protect nature. Although
all members of the movement sought to protect nature, there were two predominant schools as to
how to go about this. In their two philosophies, they created two methods for human interaction
with the wilderness. The conservationist movement can be called the utilitarian movement, and
sought the greatest good for the greatest number over the longest term. In contrast, the
preservationist school aimed at keeping nature in its current state, although the ... Show more

This networking would serve him later in life, but first he had to receive an education in forestry,
something unavailable in America. Thus he traveled to Germany to study forestry theory in
Germany and England. The time spent in Europe formed the foundation of his beliefs on
conservation and through him those of the conservationist movement.
Pinchot left Europe with some convictions about forestry. He had learned... that trees are a crop...
Pinchot brought the gospel that forestry was the art of using a forest without destroying it... [He]
preached that through the use of proper methods a forest could be both harvested and preserved.
(McGeary 23) This conviction reveals the underlying theory to all of the conservation movement,
that nature should be viewed in the confines of its economic value. For example, Pinchot s policy
did not allow for the continuation of old growth forests, but demanded that they be cut down and
let new trees to grow back in their place. He clashed repeatedly during his career with
conservationists who were basically devoted to preserving the trees. (McGeary 87)
To understand where the motivation and passion to protect the environment was developed, one
looks to the rapid deforestation of East Coast old growth forests at the turn of the century. As
Gifford Pinchot expressed it, The American Colossus was fiercely at work turning natural resources
into money. A

Censorship In 1984 And Today s North Korean Government
Censorship
Potter Stewart, an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, once said, Censorship
reflects a society s lack of confidence in itself ( Potter Stewart Quotes ). A well built, structured
society can tolerate dissent. On the other hand, some governments censors their citizens to suppress
opposing opinions. This is relevant to the novel 1984, by George Orwell, and today s North Korean
government as both countries use the same types of censorship to censor information and ideas and
influence their citizens opinions. In the novel, the totalitarian government, which is called the Party
ruled by a god like figure who is Big Brother, controls every aspect of human life ranging from
action to thought. This control can be seen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1984, limiting communication comes in the form of language. The Party are inventing a new
language that shortens words, and they call it Newspeak. Syme, a philologist who specializes in
Newspeak discusses this language with Winston:
It s a beautiful thing, the Destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the verbs and
adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as well. It isn t only the
synonyms; there are also the antonyms. After all, what justification is there for a word, which is
simply the opposite of some other word? A word contains its opposite in itself. (Orwell

  • 2. The Economic Benefits Of Economic Welfare Essay Economic welfare is defined as the well being or standard of living of an individual or individuals taking part in an economy (Business Dictionary, 2015). This can be measured through statistics such as individual income, health care expense, educational achievement and opportunity for economic growth. The better one fares among these categories, the more likely one is to have a higher standard of living and possess an inherent socio economic advantage. Currently, the aboriginal population scores poorly across all of these standards. Despite governmentincentives, the average indigenous person is born into an economic disadvantage with little room for vertical movement, indicating a need for major social and legislative change. Among the aboriginal population in 2005, 18.7% of individuals living with family were below the poverty line. Unattached, or single, individuals were even more likely to fall into this low income bracket at 42.8%. Conversely, these rates among the non aboriginal population were 8.4% and 28.0% respectively (Collin Jensen, 2009). These numbers highlight the economic disparity Aboriginals face, the cause of which lies rooted in their historical mistreatment. To better understand the situation today and how it came to be, one must begin by looking at early Canadian policy involving Aboriginals. The first important document concerned with indigenous rights was the Royal Proclamation. Signed in 1763, it recognized the sovereignty of the aboriginal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A group of four school employees usually take care of about 15 children. In Vienna alone, there are 549 nurseries taking care of 5000 children. Once your child reaches the age of three, they graduate into kindergarten, then they go on to primary schoolat the age of six. In the nurseries, children are taught physical activities and cultural practices, and they are first introduced to the English language and computers. In kindergarten, there are twenty five children per group. After school services are typically found nearby primary schools. There, the staff concentrates on various activities, including homework (Practical Life in Vienna). Similarities in childcare practices in Austria vs. the USA include how informal babysitting is. It is done on an informal basis in both countries (Practical Life in Vienna). They both offer childcare facilities for working parents, and both are equally expensive at the preschool level and below. Both countries have nannies for more wealthy families to hire to help take care of their children while they are away at work (Childcare in the US).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. The Horrors of the Jewish Holocaust What if there was a choice on whether to be Jewish or Non Jewish, to either be Jewish and fight back or to go with the flow, and to be Non Jewish and fight back or go with the flow? Being non jewish and going with the flow would be the smart choice, if survival is the goal. In that time period being Jewish was awful. Being Jewish basically meant you were an outcast. During the Holocaustit would have been better to not be Jewish and to stay out of the way, or go with the flow. Even though being Non Jewish and not fighting back is the easiest way to go, being Non Jewish and fighting back is the most sincere thing to do. Fighting back is a great thing to do too. If the Non Jewish people are fighting back they could be saving peoples lives which is great; however, taking the risk of fighting back can affect more than just one person. Sure if the Non Jewish people are fighting back they could be helping the Jewish people which is a great thing. If your Non Jewish and fighting back then they could also be considered heroes in the long run, and maybe could convince the Nazis to stop harming the Jewish people. There is always a possibility that if the Jewish people would have fought back that maybe the black and white issue would not have happened. Yes, fighting back is the most sincere thing to do, but if survival is the key then fighting back shouldn t be done. Staying out of the way and not making more problems is honestly the smart thing to do. Simply going with the flow is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Film Analysis Of The Film Edward Scissor Hands Essay The film Edward Scissor Hands by Tim Burton is seen as a modern day fairytale with the story of a young man being pulled out of a solitary life into a large town that has a very social community. When you look closely at the film you can see that it has many deeper meanings and emotions that are displayed themes throughout the film, some of these are: appearance vs reality, Conformity /sameness and Self discovery. Throughout this film we see the theme appearance vs reality which is shown many times. For example, at the start of the movie we see the mansion which makes the film look like a horror film but when you see it you are surprised since it has a big colorful well kept garden and it makes it look a lot less intimidating. The most noticeable example of this theme is Edward, when you first get a glimpse of Edward we see him in a dark corner inside his mansion. He is spotted by peg who is trying to sell make when she first sees him she doesn t feel threatened by him, then she sees that he has a lot of features that make him look like a dangerous person some of these are, sharp scissors/blades as hands, scars on his face, pale skin and dark clothes with black untidy hair, when she sees these she tries to leave the mansion but Edward tells her not to go. • 6. Discuss The Impact Of Globalization On American Football Globalization has long been attributed as one of the main factors contributing to the overwhelming popularity of football around the world. Through this process of global diffusion, football has managed to reach across borders and cultures to amass an astounding 3.5 billion fans from all over the world (McGowan). Globalization has also provided football with another gift: migration. This particular effect is highlighted in European football with the rise of increasingly diverse national teams. Immigration in Europe has always been substantial, but after World War II many Western European countries saw an increase of people crossing their borders. Migrations to various European countries have continued to rise exponentially in the 21st century... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was a definite loss of identity as Germans tried to move on from the war. The rebuilding process was not going to be easy. And as history had it, it took a miracle for the German people to finally be able to claim a new national identity. The West Germanynational team s win in the 1984 World Cup was the start of a new era for the German people, it mark[ed] the beginning of Germany s rebirth as a gradually more self confident nation... (Krauss 3). Thus their national team became their new source of national vitality and symbol of strength. When Germany became officially reunited in 1990, the West German national team had just won another World Cup months before, marking a historic moment in Germany with another, and strengthening the connection between football and Germany. This is still true today, but the team that won the country s first World Cup and the team that won their most recent 2014 World Cup could not be more different. That squad boasted an impressive selection of foreign heritage players. Among them were Mesut Г–zil (Turkey), JГ©rГґme Boateng (Ghana), Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose (Poland), Shkodran Mustafi (Albania), and Sami Khedira (Tunisia). • 11. Gender Roles In Rebecca Solnit s Cassandra Amongst The... Hysteria derives from the greek work uterus. That notion refers to women everywhere having to live by the myth of gender roles. Most of the time these stereotypes turn into name calling which result in a harassment of words sticking long enough to the point where it s deemed as normal. The significance of that myth by people who endure verbal attacks correlates to how the rest of the crowd then perceives the judged. The consequences that follow are in the form of reputation creating these social norms that are unfair. In the tale Cassandra Amongst the Creeps, author Rebecca Solnit exemplifies the topic of how myths create social norms with the setting stone story of the goddess denying a Gods sexual request. As a result the curse of disbelief and tainted credibility of women was made normal as that myth stayed alive throughout history even to this day. In conjunction to Solnit, Lauren Holmes author of Barbara the Slut exhibits the modern setting of a high schoolto portray how impactful perceptionand credibility derived from that myth are. Both authors entertain how certain attitudes perpetuate future problems that can destroy characters esteem. Barbara s scarred credibility was in result of other people s false conscious of her character. • 15. Four Signs Of Groupthink Groupthink is a theory of social interaction involved with methods of group decision making, originally developed by Irving Janis, a social psychologist, in 1972 (Communication Theory). Groupthink was initially described by Janis as the thought processes of people engaged in group decision making with a deep desire to conform to in group members гѓјrequiring extreme loyalty to group values and the exclusion of those deemed part of an out group . In situations when groupthink occurs, the need for members of the group discussion to conform their ideas to those of the group overpowers the individual s need to evaluate group choices critically, whether or not one fully agrees or supports an alternative answer (Psychology Today). There inlies danger... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first of these signs of groupthink named Out , due to the nature of the phenomenon, arises when people disagree with majority consensus receive accusations of doing so purposefully, resulting in conflict from the argumentative nature of the situation (Janis). This ties into the Direct Pressure on Dissenters trait, which details how group members will threaten/ put pressure on those expressing opposition to majority opinion to persuade them not to contradict the expectations of the group. This then leads into the next phenomenon of groupthink called Self Censorship . Self Censorship, produced by pressures to conform, explains that, when a member believes they are the only person who has a certain belief, they self censor for fear of being outcast from the group. Instead of speaking out, they keep their thoughts hidden from othersгѓјnot wanting to be a dissenter or seen as disagreeable. • 16. Economic Inequality And Its Effects On Economic Growth The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer is an aphorism elicited from the topic of economic inequality. Over the past decades, economic inequality has been rising and at an increasing rate, expanding the gap between the rich and the poor. The direct relationship between inequality and poverty has shown that while inequality increases, so too does poverty. Increased inequality is harmful for economic growth and its effects also bear social implications. Although there are arguments on the consequences of wealth redistribution and its unintended impact on economic growth, wealth should be redistributed to reduce inequality and poverty, sequentially leading to more economic development and a higher standard of living for society. Economic inequality occurs in two forms: income inequality and wealth inequality. There remains a dispute between whether income inequality or wealth inequality should be the focus to reducing economic inequality. Considerable attention has been given to income disparities, however, it is important to realize that simply addressing income inequality will not adequately address the gross disparity between the poor and the ultra rich. For example, Bill Gates is estimated to earn around $7 billion per year (estimates vary wildly depending on how his income is calculated). However, even if this income was taxed at 100%, Gates would still have in excess of $70 billion in accumulated wealth. Gates could continue spending a million dollars per day, ... • 21. John Stuart Mill s Final Chapter Summary Mill begins his final chapter by trying to cover the meaning of justice, by coming up with a list of things that are frequently classified as just or unjust. He examined what justice is and says that it is the concept of the moral rights of an individual. He talks about so many solid examples of injustice. Firstly, it is unjust to deprive one of his legal rights, violating one s moral rights, everyone should receive what the deserve whether good or bad, break contracts and be partial. Mill differentiated other outlines of moralityfrom justice through the idea of a perfect duty. Fences written by August Wilson and Death of a Salesman written by Arthur Miller are two plays that could be considered very different in terms of their plot. The plots of both plays contain two very different cultural backgrounds which affects each protagonist differently. If the reader or audience looks past the plot into the theme and symbolisms used they can see that the plays are more similar than they are different. Analysis Of Anthem, By Ayn Rand Is dystopian fiction, unremittingly bleak, leaving no room for hope, or is it a positive warning to persuade us to speculate about the world that mankind has created. On the surface, dystopian fiction is a bleak, depressing genre that offers a detailed and destructive presentation of the very worst of social alternative , but in actuality it is a means of speculation that reveals to the audience the real threats in society. It extrapolates contemporary socio political trends taken into extremes , which compels its audience to re examine the values of their society, resulting in an optimistic tale that gives the audience hope to escape their pessimistic future. Anthem by Ayn Rand (1937) is a detailed portrait of a collectivist society overstated for the purpose of satire and storytelling. As a politically conscious writer, Rand writes to communicate to her audience her political perception into the destructive psychology of collectivism. This exposes the audience to the risks of conformity, along with providing means to avoid this dystopian imagination crystallising into reality. Dystopias are a hyperbolic view of a familiar society s values, and assert that total control is harmful to the individual. From there, he tells his account of his expulsion from school and his subsequent lonesome journey throughout New York, all of which happened leading up to his voluntary admission into the sanitorium. Most of the novel s adversaries argue that the book should be banned due to its vulgar content including the constant use of profanity, the apparent thoughts of violence, and the descriptions of sexual activity. On the contrary, I believe that this novel should not be banned because it brings attention to mental illness. The most valid argument supporting the banning of The Catcher in the Rye is the abundant usage of profanity. The novel is composed of a variety of negative language which helps define Holden s character. Salinger uses multiple words with negative connotations such as: lousy , bastard , sonuvabitch , and phony . It is no surprise that three of the top five words in The Catcher in the Rye goddam , hell and damn are curse words... (Taylor). So, in a perfect world nobody should approve of this ... I was dragging my feet when it came to getting ready to start school in the fall, and I knew I wasn t ready. I approached my mom with the idea of flying out to California and get to know my familyand grandparents there better. 3 weeks later I was on a planeflying to Sacramento, as all my friends began their freshman year of college. I ll admit it was tough to see all my friends take the next step in life and I was a couple thousand miles away with nothing planned out. I decided to take that weekend and head to Lake Tahoe. It literally was a breath of fresh air for me. I was at (debatably) the most beautiful lake on earth. Things seemed clearer to me after that trip and I was able to remind myself that not everyone takes the same path in life, and we definitely won t all end up in the same place. I took the rest of those few months to be outdoorsy, paddleboard, hike and ride horses. When November came and it was time to come home, I was ready. The asteroid that hit 65 million years ago was approximately 6 15km in diameter, hit the earth with the force of five billion atomic bombs. Singleton EDU 7253 Legal Environment of Higher Education May 28, 2015 Abstract Because of recent court cases such as O Bannon v. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the issue of whether intercollegiate student athletes should be compensated for their athletic appearances on behalf of colleges has been featured in the news and been the subject of much scholarly writing. This literature review will focus on the major themes discussed in peer reviewed journals and law reviews as well as the main judicial opinions on this issue to this point. As colleges and the NCAA continue to battle over the appropriate role of profit and amateurism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other themes that are pro compensation include redefining amateurism and worker s compensation and liability issues. The fourth stream of literature focuses on various reasons that intercollegiate athletes should not be paid to play, mostly viewpoints that consider the use of the Sherman Act within intercollegiate athletics to be judicial overreach. The Sherman Antitrust Act Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act, in part, states that every contract, combination... or conspiracy, in the restraint of trade or commerce... is declared to be illegal. (Sherman Act, 2006). This law provides a comprehensive charter of economic liberty aimed at preserving free and unfettered competition as the rule of trade (Northern Pacific Railway Company vs. United States, 1958; Reiter vs. Sonotone Corporation, 1979). It relies on a fundamental belief in supply and demand (Baum Research Development Company vs. Hillerich Bradsby, 1998). There are two main ways by which a plaintiff could challenge the NCAA s no pay rules under Section 1 of the Sherman Act. First, the plaintiff could argue that the no pay regulations signify a type of wage fixing that damages not only the market for the student athletes skills but also the value of college sports as a whole. Second, the plaintiff could argue that the NCAA rules create an unlawful group prohibition of those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conservation and Preservation at the Turn of the 19th Century Missing Works Cited The environmentalist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries presents a picture of America at the time: torn between the desires to expand while seeking to protect nature. Although all members of the movement sought to protect nature, there were two predominant schools as to how to go about this. In their two philosophies, they created two methods for human interaction with the wilderness. The conservationist movement can be called the utilitarian movement, and sought the greatest good for the greatest number over the longest term. He had learned... that trees are a crop... Pinchot brought the gospel that forestry was the art of using a forest without destroying it... [He] preached that through the use of proper methods a forest could be both harvested and preserved. (McGeary 23) This conviction reveals the underlying theory to all of the conservation movement, that nature should be viewed in the confines of its economic value. For example, Pinchot s policy did not allow for the continuation of old growth forests, but demanded that they be cut down and let new trees to grow back in their place. He clashed repeatedly during his career with conservationists who were basically devoted to preserving the trees. (McGeary 87) To understand where the motivation and passion to protect the environment was developed, one looks to the rapid deforestation of East Coast old growth forests at the turn of the century.
