Purpose of the Paper (Examining the Production of Contemporary Historiography) - The goal
of this paper is to allow you to analyze how “historiography” is an ongoing process largely
influenced by the news media. History is a subjectively generated product. History incorporates
the biases and viewpoints of those who produce it. The news media today is a key source in
providing us with “meaning” connected to newsworthy “historical” events. In fact, the news
media is in fact a major part of the process that generates "history.” Although news media
reporters and editors frequently claim that they are presenting “just the facts," the way in which
these “facts” are presented often carry a number of biases that strongly influence public
perception and interpretations of current events.
For this assignment, you are going to pick a specific, single international event and examine how
this event is presented by different news media sources from around the globe. You are being
asked to compare the articles you have selected for this assignment and discuss how the differing
ways in which the event you have chosen actually reflects more than the "plain" facts, but rather
reveals complex layers of social values, assumptions, biases, beliefs and meanings by each of
your articles' authors.
Selecting a Topic
1) First, select a single international news event that has occurred in the past 60 days. Since the
purpose of the paper is to address international issues, the event you select for this assignment
must have occurred OUTSIDE of the United States (although the issue may INCLUDE the US

throughout your time as a CAS student, you have been exposed to various developmental theories and practices that align with them. One way that we can connect theoretical understandings with developmentally appropriate practices is through the spaces we create for children and adolescents at-risk.
Develop a classroom or community center/plot of land floorplan where there is intentionality behind every inch of the space. Label each area with its purpose and what area of development it is meant to foster. Be specific, go beyond saying, "Cognitive, Social-emotional, Language, or Physical development". You should have a minimum of 4 pages:
1. A cover page (1 points) where you list your name, student ID, dat, "HW3" and then tell me about the space you are designing and for what age group and population.

For the culminating project for this class, you will
have an opportunity to produce a 3-4-page
reflection paper and a 2-3-minute audio recording
that moves beyond popular political and media
representations of refugees and immigrants.
There are 2 parts to this final project and both
must be submitted by Sat. December 7th 11:59pm:
PART 1: The Paper
A 3-4-page single-spaced essay that draws on materials posted in module folders throughout
the semester---you may also draw on the books What is the What and The Far Away Brothers.
• Your essay should present a clear thesis, a several points about how media
representations of refugees and immigrants has changed over time.
• How would you describe the common understanding of refugees, communities and
citizenship in the U.S.? What role does media play? Would you change media
representation? How so?
PART 2: The Audio Project
You will produce a 2-3-minute audio statement for your classmates to hear. In this statement
you may respond to these questions:
o What do you think most people believe about refugees in the US?
o How do you think refugees and immigrants are represented in the media?
o What are your personal experiences with refugees or immigrants (if any)?
In summary, you will carefully consider how the media represents refugees and immigrants in
the news and popular culture, then review the module folders for the most useful materials that
would help you construct your arguments and points. You will then produce a paper and an
audio piece about these reflections.
Some Suggestions for Writing
Find representations of media items in the news, movies, news websites and stories that
depict refugees. For example, the Syrian conflict as well as Eastern European refugees,
and displaced populations from West Africa (climate refugees) or Latin America (political
unrest) have been profiled heavily in the news.
• Be sure to document where you find these stories and images of refugees
• Create a thesis statement on what your observations are for these media stories.
• Develop an outline of your arguments and main points—it is useful to use headings to keep your
thoughts organized.

I. Attention: I can't breathe, my arms are tingling, I'm really dizzy, and it feels as if
my heart is about to fly out of my chest. When this happened to me three years ago
at an outdoor concert, I was really frightened. At the time, I had no idea what was

I did additional research for this speech from sources such as the National Institute

people affected most often by them, and the options for treatment.

I. Panic attacks are a severe medical condition with a number of physical and mental

suffer from panic attacks.

strike women twice as often as men.
2. Half the people who suffer from panic attacks develop symptoms

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, please read Chapter 5: Water, in Turk and Bensel’s Contemporary Environmental Issues textbook (2014). In the second major essay, you were asked to seek a modern social issue that interests you (perhaps

Begin your paper by discussing the moral issue in question: giving to the poor. Perhaps you will spend a couple of sentences on this. Then explain that this is something Peter Singer discussed in his 1973 essay “Famine, Affluence, and Morality.” In a sentence, explain what Singer argues. Then, tell the reader what you will argue. throughout your time as a CAS student, you have been exposed to various developmental theories and practices that align with them. One way that we can connect theoretical understandings with developmentally appropriate practices is through the spaces we create for children and adolescents at-risk.
Develop a classroom or community center/plot of land floorplan where there is intentionality behind every inch of the space. Label each area with its purpose and what area of development it is meant to foster. Be specific, go beyond saying, "Cognitive, Social-emotional, Language, or Physical development". You should have a minimum of 4 pages:
1. A cover page (1 points) where you list your name, student ID, dat, "HW3" and then tell me about the space you are designing and for what age group and population.
· Ages can range from 4 year old's to 18 year old's
· Populations can range from a low-income classroom in an urban, suburban, or rural area to a targeted population (e.g., LGBTQIA+, sexual assault survivors, individuals with learning differences, undocumented youth, etc.)
· Overarching goal of the space you are creating

*** You do not need to be an artistic genius to do well on this assignment. It is most important to demonstrate your intentionality in curating spaces for children and adolescents at-risk. Importantly, it needs to be clear that you thought through different processes that impact development.

For the culminating project for this class, you will
have an opportunity to produce a 3-4-page
reflection paper and a 2-3-minute audio recording

representations of refugees and immigrants.
There are 2 parts to this final project and both
must be submitted by Sat. December 7th 11:59pm:
PART 1: The Paper
A 3-4-page single-spaced essay that draws on materials posted in module folders throughout
the semester---you may also draw on the books What is the What and The Far Away Brothers.
• Your essay should present a clear thesis, a several points about how media
representations of refugees and immigrants has changed over time.
• How would you describe the common understanding of refugees, communities and
citizenship in the U.S.? What role does media play? Would you change media
representation? How so?
PART 2: The Audio Project
You will produce a 2-3-minute audio statement for your classmates to hear. In this statement
you may respond to these questions:
o What do you think most people believe about refugees in the US?
o How do you think refugees and immigrants are represented in the media?
o What are your personal experiences with refugees or immigrants (if any)?
In summary, you will carefully consider how the media represents refugees and immigrants in
the news and popular culture, then review the module folders for the most useful materials that
would help you construct your arguments and points. You will then produce a paper and an
audio piece about these reflections.
Some Suggestions for Writing
Find representations of media items in the news, movies, news websites and stories that
depict refugees. For example, the Syrian conflict as well as Eastern European refugees,
and displaced populations from West Africa (climate refugees) or Latin America (political
unrest) have been profiled heavily in the news.
• Be sure to document where you find these stories and images of refugees
• Create a thesis statement on what your observations are for these media stories.
• Develop an outline of your arguments and main points—it is useful to use headings to keep your
thoughts organized.

I. Attention: I can't breathe, my arms are tingling, I'm really dizzy, and it feels as if
my heart is about to fly out of my chest. When this happened to me three years ago
at an outdoor concert, I was really frightened. At the time, I had no idea what was
going on.
II. Topic: My doctor told me later that I had experienced a panic attack.
III. Credibility: I have learned a lot about my condition during the past three years, and
I did additional research for this speech from sources such as the National Institute
of Mental Health and the American Psychiatric Association as well as others.
IV. Preview: Today I would like to inform you about the nature of panic attacks, the
people affected most often by them, and the options for treatment.
(Transition: Let's start with the nature of panic attacks.)
I. Panic attacks are a severe medical condition with a number of physical and mental
symptoms.

A. As defined by the National Institute of Mental Health, panic attacks involve
"unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical
symptoms."
1. The attacks usually come out of nowhere and strike when least
expected.
2. Their length can vary from a few minutes to several hours.
B. There are a number of symptoms common to most panic attacks.
1. Physical symptoms include a pounding heart, shortness of breath,
lightheadedness, and numbness or tingling sensations in the arms

2. Mental symptoms include acute fear, a sense of disaster or
helplessness, and a feeling of being detached from one's own body.

II. Panic attacks affect millions of people.
A. According to the American Psychiatric Association, six million Americans
suffer from panic attacks.
B. Some groups have a higher incidence of panic attacks than do other groups.
1. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that panic attacks
strike women twice as often as men.
2. Half the people who suffer from panic attacks develop symptoms
before the age of 24. (National Institutes of Health)

SELF ESTEEM IN YOUTH
Self-esteem is defined as how one feels about oneself.1 It may be either high or low depending upon a personal assessment of self. Healthy self-esteem is essential for success in every area of life. It is one of the most dynamic variables in youth development.

It has been observed that children experience a decline in self esteem during adolescence years which is a critical transition period for them. Faculty Perceptions Of Research Rewards
This study surveyed 320 faculty members from 10 business schools to examine the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards that motivate faculty to conduct research. Of the thirteen rewards studied, receiving or having tenure is the most important reward, while getting a possible administrative position was the least important. There were significant differences in the importance of these rewards between tenured-untenured and between male-female faculty members. Faculty perceives a strong link between research productivity and the attainment of the rewards of tenure and of promotion. However, in the minds of the faculty, the link between publications and the reward of salary increases is not strong. Associate professors reported lesser importance than either full professors or assistant professors on nine of the thirteen rewards and perceived a weaker link between research productivity and achieving the reward. This implies that the associate professors are the least motivated faculty rank to perform research. There was no significant difference in the number of journal articles either published or accepted for publication within the past 24 months by tenure status, gender, or faculty rank.
B Rules for cataloguing journals (print and electronic), and serial monographs
A serial is defined as a continuing resource issued in a succession of discrete parts, usually bearing numbering, that has no predetermined conclusion. Examples of serials include journals (and e-journals), magazines, directories, statistics, annual reports etc. (AACR Appendix D-7)
These can be divided into 3 types for the purposes of inputting on SWIMS
(1) most journals need to appear in journal listings but are not loaned individually, and therefore need only a Journals catalogue record with indication of the range of holdings. This includes e-journals – see B1-B10
(2) those which need to appear in journal listings because you have a “run” of holdings, but some locations also choose to add each issue to the catalogue for loan as books (whether shelved with the bookstock or the journals). These are journals where each issue usually relates to a specific subject, sometimes known as serial monographs (eg Clinics in Laboratory Medicine; Selected Readings in Plastic Surgery; Orthopedic Clinics of North America) – see B1-B10, and B11 (p7)
(3) those which are published serially, but would not generally be included in journal listings, and are often shelved with the book stock (eg directories, statistics, annual reports; BNF; Recent Advances in….) – catalogue according to Section A (Rule for books…)

Journal of Global Infectious Diseases (JGID) a peer-reviewed Semiannual international journal is being published under the auspices of the International Infectiologists Network .
The journal’s full text is online at www.jgid.org With the aim of faster and better dissemination of knowledge, we will be publishing articles ‘Ahead of Print’ immediately on acceptance. In addition, the journal would allow free access (Open Access) to its contents, which is likely to attract more readers and citations to articles published in JGID.

One-Hour Citation Quiz for the Journal of International Wildlife Law and Policy, This is a short quiz of your ability to cite according to the Bluebook, focusing on the types of sources typical for an international law journal: books, periodicals, international treaties (conventions), and Internet sources. Please look at the inner cover “Quick Reference” of the Bluebook as a reminder and a summary of these citation forms. Please take the quiz and finish it within one hour. Use only a Bluebook or ALWD manual. Do not communicate within anyone else about your answers in completing your answers.
