Jordan is a country with many historical and natural attractions. Some of its main draws are Petra, an ancient Nabatean city carved into rose-colored rock cliffs that was rediscovered in 1812; historical sites from Biblical, Roman, and early Islamic times located around the country; and Wadi Rum, a desert landscape featured in Lawrence of Arabia. Jordan has a population of 5.7 million and tourism contributes 12% to its GDP, with its capital and largest city being Amman. Other sites of interest include Jerash with its well-preserved Roman ruins, the Dead Sea with the lowest elevation on Earth, and Mount Nebo from which Moses viewed the Promised Land.
