Forcomputingefficiency,analysisof thetheoretical 3D models continued to bedoneat1/18scale. • I investigated and applied multiplenumerical methodsof analysis,and compared theirresultsto oneanother and to thewind tunnel data, in orderto ensurethattheoreticalmodelingwould continueto return themostrealisticand accuratepossibleresults.Alongwith thegradualfine-tuningof methods,the teamcontinuedto modify and remodel thedesigns forboth thefrontand rear wingbased on theCFD calculationsI wasrunning. • Thefinal wingdesignswereremodeled atfull scale,and thesemodels were run through ANSYS Fluentagain forfinal analysis.Thiscomprehensively validated their expected aerodynamicqualities and confirmed thefinal improved design. PROPELLANT& FIRINGMECHANISMREDESIGN: 5.56x45mm NATORound& M-16 Rifle Our teamdesigned analternativepropellantto traditionalgunpowder.Attheend of theproject,wehad designed around thatisboth fireand shockresistant, and 60%lighter than aconventional5.56x45mmNATO round butjustaseffective,aswell asanelectronicfiring mechanismwith which to fireit. Iserved primarilyasthe Solidworksspecialistand aided heavily with advanced math.Theprojectwascompleted in threemonths. • The team did someresearch and calculations,and agreed on a mixture of RDX, plasticizers,and a filler that behaved very similarly to gunpowder in explosive forceand velocity.This newformula requires less volume than gunpowder to resultin thesame explosiveforce,savingweightand space. • SinceRDX is shock resistantand our formulacould not be fired by conventional means,wedesigned an electronic firingmechanism. Theteam altered key components of the M-16 mechanismso thatthe firing pin didn'tmove, and instead becametemporarily electrified in order to fireeach round,thus making the improved round usable.
