2. Introduction Jonathan Edwards was a very talented writer in the 1700’s. Edwards used many different styles of writing. His work differed from many other writers in his time tremendously. He mostly wrote about many topics relating to Heaven and Hell, God and the Devil, sin and sinners. He chose to write about these things because he was a well known preacher. His story that was most known by his readers is called “Sinners in theHands of an Angry God.”(Edwards, Jonathan)
3. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” This work of literature is a sermon written by Edwards, that had been preached in 1741. Edwards most popular work of literature Used many types of figurative language including: metaphors, similes, imagery, repetition, and parallelism. Edwards continually wrote about all the bad consequences that could come out of missing out on church, never about the good.
4. Jonathan Edwards Anne Bradstreet Always positive when writing or speaking of Heaven. Thought that her possessions were of help to her while alive , but would gladly leave them behind when she passes. Focused on the negatives of Heaven. Cared only about worldly possessions, and wished to be able to take them with him into his after life. Edwards Differed from Fellow Writers in his Time.
5. Jonathan Edwards William Bradford Believed that if something bad happened to a person, that they must have committed a sin to deserve that sort of punishment. Edwards interpretation of the Bible is, “The people that chose to sin, must be punished.” Shared the same belief of Edwards in what constitutes a persons sin. Believed if a person sinned that the punishment they received should be very harsh. Edwards Favored FellowWriters of his Time.
6. Quote: “The wrath of God is like great waters that are damned for the present; they increase more and more, higher and higher.” Edwards continually spoke about God’s power. God had the ability to take you into his hand by allowing you into heaven or he would open his hands and drop you into the fiery pits of Hell. Edwards believed that God would turn on all humans at some point in life. Edwards believed that all humans will be refused into heaven by the powerful God.
