2. Hope is the thing with feathers – Emily
Dickinson
"Hope" is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the
words -
And never stops - at all -And
sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
I've heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet, never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
La "speranza" è la pennuta creatura
Che si posa nell'anima -
E canta melodie senza parole -
E non smette mai - proprio mai –
E dolcissima - nella Brezza - è udita
-
E violenta dev'essere la tempesta -
Che possa confondere l'Uccellino
Che così tanti riscaldò -
L'ho udita nella landa più gelida -
E sul Mare più remoto -
Eppure, mai, alla Fine,
Ha chiesto un briciolo - di me.
3. The meaning of the poem:
Emily Dickinson describes hope as a bird with
feathers that perches in the soul. Where it
sings without words and pause. The song of
hope sounds even in the Gale and in the
coldest places. She says that she hears the
bird of hope “in the chillest land” and “on the
strangest Sea” but it never leaves her alone
and it never asks for a crumb of her, even in
the worst conditions.
6. Figurative language
Methaphor=Hope is the thing with feathers (bird)
Alliteration = strangest sea, the repetition of “s”
sound.
Personification = Hope perches, sings, and asks
7. HOPE
HOPE IS A BIRD
HOPE IS OBJECTIVELY AN ABSTRACT
THING, BUT EMILY CHANGE THIS FACT.
HOPE HAS FEATHERS
HOPE PERCHES IN THE SOULHOPE ASKS, SING, FLY
8. The poem as a paint
Artist: Vincent van
Gogh
Place: Van Gogh
Museum
tecnique: Oil color
Period: Impressionis
m
Subject: Auvers-sur-
Oise, Triticum
I associate the Van Gogh’s paint “Wheatfield with Crows” at the Dickinson’s poem, because
the subject of the paint is a flock of birds that fly in freedom on a land and this remind me
at the desciption of the “hope with feathers” that fly and perches on her heart. In the
background we can see a storm that looks like the gale described by Emily in her poem.
In both of them we can find the description/illustration of nature.
9. Personal opinion - conclusion
Personally, i really like this poem. I think that
Emily Dickinson is a very good poetry beacuse
she works with just some elements that are
semplicity, elegance and love of the nature,
that make her poems really special.
She created important poems that we will
always read gladly.
Like Emily, i love nature and i can pass even
hours thinking at it listening to music.
