John Lennon was born in 1940 in Liverpool, England during a German air raid of World War II. He had a chaotic childhood as his parents fought and divorced, sending him to live with his aunt. As an adult, Lennon became involved in the peace movement, writing the song "Give Peace a Chance" in 1969 during his honeymoon bed-in protest of the Vietnam War. The song became an anthem of the peace movement. In 1980, Lennon was tragically shot and killed in New York City by Mark David Chapman.
