2. WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE BEATLES?
We all know The Beatles as one of
the most famous British band
consisted of John Lennon, Paul
McCartney, George Harrison, and
Ringo Starr. Their songs were and
remain number-one hits all over
the world and their influence on
popular culture was—and
remains—immense.
But history of their band is much more
interesting than you expect. There are a
lot of facts you probably don’t know
about them.

3. THE BEATLES ARE THE BEST-SELLING
BAND IN HISTORY
• The Beatles are the best-selling band in
history, estimating sales of over one
billion units
• As of 2012 they have sold 177 million
units in the US, more than any other artist
• In 2008, they topped Billboard magazine's
list of the all-time most successful artists
• They hold the record for most number-
one hits on the Hot 100 chart with 20
• They have received 7 Grammy Awards
from the American National Academy of
Recording Arts and Sciences and 15 Ivor
Novello Awards from the British Academy
of Songwriters, Composers and Authors
• They were collectively included in Time
magazine's compilation of the 20th
century's 100 most influential people.

4. BEFORE LENNON/MCCARTNEY THERE
WAS MCCARTNEY/LENNON
If you pick up a Beatles album today, you’ll notice the songs are credited
to Lennon-McCartney, in alphabetical order, thanks to a longstanding
agreement between the two songwriters whereby each would get full
credit no matter who came up with the tune or lyric first. But this
alphabetical listing was not always the case.

5. ERIC CLAPTON ALMOST REPLACED
GEORGE
For five days the Fab Four
were a lonesome trio. George
Harrison decided to bow out
after months of personal
differences with his fellow
bandmates. On January 10,
1969, Harrison quit the band.
His announcement caused
John Lennon to quip, “If he
doesn’t come back by Tuesday,
we get Eric Clapton.” Harrison,
of course, came to his senses,
and returned to the band.

6. MICHAEL JACKSON OWNED THE RIGHTS
TO THE BEATLES’ SONGS
In 1984, ATV’s 4,000-song music catalog was put up for sale, and Michael
Jackson outbid all other prospective buyers for it, including Paul McCartney,
who wanted to buy back the rights to the Beatles’ songs. So, for $47.5 million,
Jackson acquired the publishing rights to most of the Beatles songs.

7. THE INITIAL ALBUM COVER FOR
YESTERDAY AND TODAY WAS BANNED
The original album artwork
featured the four smiling
members of the band dressed
in white butchers’ overalls
covered with mutilated plastic
baby dolls and slabs of raw
meat. Copies of the “butcher”
cover were pulled and
replaced with a more fan-
friendly photograph.

8. THERE WAS A “FIFTH BEATLE,” AND HE WAS
THE INSPIRATION FOR THEIR MOP TOPS
Stuart Sutcliffe was the original bassist for the band during their heady
Hamburg days. It was Sutcliffe and Lennon who named the band The
Beatles. Sutcliffe left the band in August 1961 to enroll in the Hamburg
College of Art.

9. LET IT BE WAS NOT THEIR LAST ALBUM
Although it was released in a year after Abbey Road, Let It Be was actually
recorded in early 1969, making it officially their penultimate album. The
band broke up shortly before the album’s release. In 2003, a new version of
the album, titled Let It Be… Naked was released.
