John Lennon was born in 1940 in Liverpool, England and raised by his aunt and uncle after his parents separated when he was young. He was a founding member and singer for the iconic rock band The Beatles along with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. After the Beatles broke up in 1970, Lennon pursued a successful solo career and released politically and socially charged songs about peace, equality, and anti-war ideals. In 1980, at age 40, Lennon was fatally shot outside his New York City apartment building by Mark David Chapman.
