John Cabot or Giovanni Caboto was an Italian mariner.He was born in about 1450 and he died in 1498. Born in  Genoa, Italy Has many different names; historical records and letters call him Zoanne, Juan, or John Cabot  He grew up in Venice as a young boy He has three sons named Ludovico, Sebastian, SanctoBackground Information
VoyagesOn his 1st voyage, Cabot, his son, and 18 other crew members left Bristol on May 2,1497 on the Matthew. He landed on the Newfoundland coast where he claimed the land for England.When he returned to England from his first journey, he told stories of the marvellous fishing grounds called the Grand Banks.For his 2nd journey he sailed in 1498 with 5 ships and 300 men, he sailed southward as far as Chesapeake BayRepresented England

Purpose Of ExpeditionCabot was inspired by Christopher Columbus’s journey and wanted to make his own voyage to the Orient.John Cabot wanted to find the riches of Asia and bring it back to Europe. He was attempting to find a the northwest passage which was a new route to Asia He wanted to be a famous explorer and have the glory of finding Asia.He thought that he could trade in Asia and get rich off the goods
