Redcliffe was first inhabited by Indigenous Australians and was established as a convict settlement in 1824 but was abandoned two years later due to a lack of fresh water. In the 1880s, Redcliffe became a seaside resort as people sought to holiday on its safe, sandy beaches. Access to Redcliffe improved with the opening of the Hornibrook Bridge in 1935, connecting it to the mainland and allowing the population to grow.
