John Cabot was an Italian explorer who sailed for England in 1497. On his first voyage, he landed on the coast of Newfoundland and claimed the land for England, discovering the rich fishing waters of the Grand Banks. He was attempting to find a northwest passage to Asia in order to trade goods and become wealthy. His voyages helped expand European knowledge of the North American coastline.
