Our Master Honen
Kiku TV: March 12 at 8:00 pm
The English version of the animated
depiction of the life and teaching of Jodo
Shu founder, Honen Shonin, entitled “Our
Master St. Honen”, created by our Grand
Temple—Chion-in, will be shown on Kiku
TV on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 8:00
p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
This movie is part of Jodo Shu’s ob-
servance of the 120th Anniversary of the
arrival of Jodo Shu’s pioneer ministers—Rev.
Taijo Matsuo and Rev. Gakuo Okabe (in
1894).
The movie was shown around the same
time in March 2015 but the animation was
only in Japanese. So please make every
effort to make time to watch this interesting
movie!
VISITATION BY TAISHO UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO, JAPAN

Eleven students from Josai
International University of
Chiba Prefecture, Japan also
came to Jodo Mission on Feb-
ruary 14, 2016. They were
accompanied by Professor
Sadayuki Tokoro. The stu-
dents were very much inter-
ested in meeting temple
members. They too enjoyed
the spam musubi! While en-
joying refreshments, they
were able to talk to our mem-
bers. They enjoyed Maui dur-
ing their visit and they want to
come back to Hawaii.
Jodo Mission was privileged to have visitors from two universities from Japan on Sunday, Janu-
ary 14, 2016: Taisho University Professor Jundo Nagashima and coordinator Toshimichi
Sakurai accompanied 16 students to Hawaii. It is so nice to be so young! The future Buddhist
ministers and nuns of Tendai, Shingon and Jodo Shu. Bishop Gensho Hara is an alumnus of
Taisho University and the students heard a lecture by Bishop Hara . Rev. Norimasa Nakamura,
visiting graduate student studying at the University of Hawaii, is also an alumnus of Taisho Uni-
versity. The students were so happy to be in Hawaii and they enjoyed our spam musubi!
Nehan-e Service (memorial service for Shakyamuni Buddha) was held at this time and the stu-
dents were fortunate to see the beautiful scroll of when Buddha passed away. This scroll is
taken out once a year for this memorial service.

Spring Higan-e Service
The word “Higan” literally means “the other shore” in Japanese. One
shore represents this world which we are in, and the other shore “Higan”
represents Amida Buddha’s Pure Land. The river represents the bad
mind we all possess. The concept is that we practice the teaching to
reach the other shore across the river.
We have two Higan seasons in a year. One in the spring, the other in autumn, as Higan is
held during the week of the spring and autumn equinox. Shan Tao, one of the high ranking
priests of Jodo Buddhism in China said that the sun sets due west during the equinox thus it is
a good opportunity to think about Buddha’s Pure Land which exists far away in the west, as
well as appreciate our ancestors who are also there.
Please join us in crossing the river to the other shore as we think about Buddha’s Pure
Land and respect for our ancestors. Our Higan Service will be held:
Sunday, March 27 at 10 am
On that day, Chutoba prayers will be conducted during the service. If you request a
Chutoba, please fill out the form on this page, and send it to or drop it off at the Jodo Mission
office. One Chutoba is SEVEN dollars. Please make your check payable to “Jodo
Mission of Hawaii.” Page 3

Tonkatsu Sandwich: Have you ever eaten a
tonkatsu sandwich? It is almost like eating tonkatsu
with rice, except it is between two slices of bread.
Chinatsu Maeda (left photo; husband is
Tatsuji Maeda of Japan Memorial) will
be here to help make tonkatsu sandwich
for the Fujinkai-sponsored Food Fair on
Sunday March 13, 2016 . Food Fair
will begin at 10:30 am (after 10 am
service) and will end at 12:30 pm.
Photo on right is a sample of what the
tonkatsu bento will look like. The slices
of pork in this sample is pretty large and quite
filling! As you can see from the photos, it is fried,
patted down to get out
the excess oil and a
special tonkatsu sauce
is poured on the
tonkatsu. Very
delicious!

General Membership Meeting
On Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the General Membership Meeting, Presi-
dent Jon Riki Karamatsu thanked the membership for their support of the temple
events not only in monetary contributions but also volunteering their time and en-
ergy for the recent mochi making in December, Bon Dance in August and Bazaar in Octo-
ber. He read a list of 19 new members in 2015. He asked for everyone’s continued sup-
port in 2016.
He spoke of gratitude in Buddhism and to focus on what we do have—get some sun-
light, go walking, this is a beautiful world, think positively. There is a lot of positive things
in life, don’t dwell on the past and go forward. Things that are troubling you may not be as
bad as you may think if you just try to think positively! Go walking around the block or try
your sense of smell with aroma therapy you might feel better.
Rev. Narashiba announced that 2019 Jodo Shu will celebrate 125 years in Hawaii.
In commemoration of this event, a tour to Japan in 2019 is being planned with a visit to
the Grand Temple Chion-in. The tour will cover the path which St. Honen took. So his sug-
gestion is to save your money and let’s go!
Shinnenkai—New Year’s Party: At the Shinnenkai, we did not have any Hyakusai
members (100 year olds). There may be a few 100 year olds members out there who for
some reason or another could not attend. Whoever did not attend the New Year’s Party
missed out on a very nice party. There was lucky number, and of course BINGO and won-
derful prizes. And the food was delicious! Aki Nishiyama and ladies did a wonderful job of
nishime, miso tako, sushi, sekihan, fried mahimahi, BQ chicken, gunlo mein, vegetable
tempura, potato-mac salad and wonderful deserts!
We had entertainment by Duane Miyashiro and his wife and
Sophie Narashiba playing the koto. There was
special song where you could hear the wood-
pecker tapping and the river water swishing.
Then there was BINGO and lucky number.
Below Jo Ann Matsuo worked with Skyler,
Sophie and A’Marie to call out BINGO numbers
and Skyler, Sophie and A-Marie passed out
wonderful prizes! Please join us next year for
our annual New Year’s Party!

What is “Perpetual Memorial
Service?” (Eitaikyo)
This record of a perpetual memorial service and
is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of
death occurs for a person listed on this record, the
ministers pray for that individual during the morn-
ing service. The prayers will continue each year for
as long as Jodo Mission exists.
Anyone can be included in it. You may put your
own name on the list, too. This also helps when it
is difficult to have memorial services. We also wel-
come you to attend the morning service at 930am.
How to apply
Stop by the office, and fill out the application
form. Each name costs $200. After the application
is accepted, the name will be listed on the record.

Taijo Matsuo and Rev. Gakuo Okabe (in 1894). The movie was shown around the same time in March 2015 but the animation was only in Japanese. So please make every effort to make time to watch this interesting movie!
  • 2. VISITATION BY TAISHO UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO, JAPAN Page 2 Eleven students from Josai International University of Chiba Prefecture, Japan also came to Jodo Mission on Feb- ruary 14, 2016. They were accompanied by Professor Sadayuki Tokoro. The stu- dents were very much inter- ested in meeting temple members. They too enjoyed the spam musubi! While en- joying refreshments, they were able to talk to our mem- bers. They enjoyed Maui dur- ing their visit and they want to come back to Hawaii. Jodo Mission was privileged to have visitors from two universities from Japan on Sunday, Janu- ary 14, 2016: Taisho University Professor Jundo Nagashima and coordinator Toshimichi Sakurai accompanied 16 students to Hawaii. It is so nice to be so young! The future Buddhist ministers and nuns of Tendai, Shingon and Jodo Shu. Bishop Gensho Hara is an alumnus of Taisho University and the students heard a lecture by Bishop Hara . Rev. Norimasa Nakamura, visiting graduate student studying at the University of Hawaii, is also an alumnus of Taisho Uni- versity. The students were so happy to be in Hawaii and they enjoyed our spam musubi! Nehan-e Service (memorial service for Shakyamuni Buddha) was held at this time and the stu- dents were fortunate to see the beautiful scroll of when Buddha passed away. This scroll is taken out once a year for this memorial service. VISITATION BY JOSAI INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
  • 3. Spring Higan Chutoba Form (彼岸会中塔婆申し込み用紙) Your Name(お名前) : Phone(電話): ______________ Name of Deceased (亡くなった方のお名前): 1. 2. 3. 4. One Chutoba is $7 X Total of Chutoba = Total $ (中塔婆1本7ドル) (本数) (合計) Please make checks payable to “Jodo Mission of Hawaii”. DEADLINE: Sunday, March 15, 2016 FOR OFFICE USE ONLY Order accepted by Date accepted / / (In person/ Mail / By phone) Received by Date paid / / (Cash/ Check # ) Write Spring Higan-e Service The word “Higan” literally means “the other shore” in Japanese. One shore represents this world which we are in, and the other shore “Higan” represents Amida Buddha’s Pure Land. The river represents the bad mind we all possess. The concept is that we practice the teaching to reach the other shore across the river. We have two Higan seasons in a year. One in the spring, the other in autumn, as Higan is held during the week of the spring and autumn equinox. Shan Tao, one of the high ranking priests of Jodo Buddhism in China said that the sun sets due west during the equinox thus it is a good opportunity to think about Buddha’s Pure Land which exists far away in the west, as well as appreciate our ancestors who are also there. Please join us in crossing the river to the other shore as we think about Buddha’s Pure Land and respect for our ancestors. Our Higan Service will be held: Sunday, March 27 at 10 am On that day, Chutoba prayers will be conducted during the service. If you request a Chutoba, please fill out the form on this page, and send it to or drop it off at the Jodo Mission office. One Chutoba is SEVEN dollars. Please make your check payable to “Jodo Mission of Hawaii.” Page 3 Higan Service March 27 at 10 a.m. ____ I plan to attend service ____ I do not plan to attend
  • 4. Tonkatsu Sandwich: Have you ever eaten a tonkatsu sandwich? It is almost like eating tonkatsu with rice, except it is between two slices of bread. Chinatsu Maeda (left photo; husband is Tatsuji Maeda of Japan Memorial) will be here to help make tonkatsu sandwich for the Fujinkai-sponsored Food Fair on Sunday March 13, 2016 . Food Fair will begin at 10:30 am (after 10 am service) and will end at 12:30 pm. Photo on right is a sample of what the tonkatsu bento will look like. The slices of pork in this sample is pretty large and quite filling! As you can see from the photos, it is fried, patted down to get out the excess oil and a special tonkatsu sauce is poured on the tonkatsu. Very delicious! Page 4 HAWAII STATE JODO SHU FUJINKAI SCHOLARSHIP Namiye Nakamura Scholarship The Hawaii State Jodo Shu Fujinkai offers a $1,000 Namiye Nakamura Scholarship to a Hawaii high school graduate or a member of the temple who wishes to further his/her education toward a de- gree or advanced degree in an accredited college or university. • 5. General Membership Meeting On Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the General Membership Meeting, Presi- dent Jon Riki Karamatsu thanked the membership for their support of the temple events not only in monetary contributions but also volunteering their time and en- ergy for the recent mochi making in December, Bon Dance in August and Bazaar in Octo- ber. He read a list of 19 new members in 2015. He asked for everyone’s continued sup- port in 2016. He spoke of gratitude in Buddhism and to focus on what we do have—get some sun- light, go walking, this is a beautiful world, think positively. There is a lot of positive things in life, don’t dwell on the past and go forward. Things that are troubling you may not be as bad as you may think if you just try to think positively! Go walking around the block or try your sense of smell with aroma therapy you might feel better. Rev. Narashiba announced that 2019 Jodo Shu will celebrate 125 years in Hawaii. In commemoration of this event, a tour to Japan in 2019 is being planned with a visit to the Grand Temple Chion-in. The tour will cover the path which St. Honen took. So his sug- gestion is to save your money and let’s go! Shinnenkai—New Year’s Party: At the Shinnenkai, we did not have any Hyakusai members (100 year olds). There may be a few 100 year olds members out there who for some reason or another could not attend. Whoever did not attend the New Year’s Party missed out on a very nice party. There was lucky number, and of course BINGO and won- derful prizes. And the food was delicious! Aki Nishiyama and ladies did a wonderful job of nishime, miso tako, sushi, sekihan, fried mahimahi, BQ chicken, gunlo mein, vegetable tempura, potato-mac salad and wonderful deserts! We had entertainment by Duane Miyashiro and his wife and Sophie Narashiba playing the koto. There was special song where you could hear the wood- pecker tapping and the river water swishing. Then there was BINGO and lucky number. Below Jo Ann Matsuo worked with Skyler, Sophie and A’Marie to call out BINGO numbers and Skyler, Sophie and A-Marie passed out wonderful prizes! Please join us next year for our annual New Year’s Party! Page 5
