Page 2 September 13—Keiro Kai and Grandparents’ Day The Intermediate YBA and Sunday School will honor our Keiro mem- bers (all those 80 years old and older) on Sunday, September 13, at 10 a.m. Please join us if you are able to come. Also, younger generation, please bring your parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles who are 80 years and older to join this event! It will be a special treat for them! What I’ve Felt These Past Three Months by Koichiro Narita I am Koichiro Narita from Japan. I worked at Jodo Mission of Hawaii as a volunteer from May to August 2015. In these three months, I had so many great experiences at Jodo Mission of Hawaii. I would like to share two things that left a strong impression in my mind. First, my one biggest project at this temple was preparing for Obon service with Jodo Mission’s minister Yubun Narashiba. There are three things to do for Obon preparation. First, we need to shave old toba and make it clean. Second, we set the base for toba. And then, we set toba on the base. Everything is really new for me. I didn’t know what a minister needs to do to prepare for Obon even though I had spent most of my lifetime in one of biggest Buddhist coun- try Japan. The number of toba was approximately 500. So it was tough work but also fun work. Because Narashiba sensei taught me various things as well as work in preparing for Obon ser- vice, this experience really inspired me and I would like to keep it in my mind as a rewarding experience in Hawaii. Second thing is the relationship between Hawaiian people and Buddhism. One day, I went to a public funeral with Narashiba sensei. The funeral was Buddhist style but there are differences compared to a Japanese one. The deceased was in the army, so there was an army ritual in middle of the funeral. I’ve never experienced those things. I felt the style affected by culture. That was interesting for me. I have spent great time at Jodo Mission of Hawaii and I will remember all which I experienced here.
- 3. BON DANCE (August 14-15, 2015) THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our Bon Dance held on August 14-15, 2015. There were so many, many people helping behind the scenes and we really appreciate all your hard work. It is with everyone’s help that we can continue to do this event. Without someone arranging with the bon dancers, getting the yagura up, arranging for the stairway to get on top of the yagura, someone setting up chairs so people could sit down, someone getting the omamoris, someone selling the omamoris, bon dance towels, happi coats, kimonos, parking attendants from the Kiwanis Club, making and sell- ing andagis (Okinawan donuts), someone making and selling the wonderful Jodo Mission special shaved ice, someone making and selling musubis, spam musubis, someone making and selling chichi dango, someone ordering and selling saimin, someone making and selling grilled BBQ sticks, someone making and selling sushi, soba salad, turkey jook, noodles someone making and selling hot dogs, chili and rice, someone making and selling waffle dogs, hamburgers, peanut butter floats, someone washing dishes and more dishes, someone making sure that all the trash cans were not overflowing with trash, someone answering the many questions people called about, including “how do I get to Jodo Mission?” or “where can I park?” Thank you also to the many, many dancers who came and had fun dancing. Thank you to the taiko group Dragon Beat which began each day of the Bon Dance with wonderful spirit! Thank you to the person or persons who made the teru teru bozu for Saturday night. Did you notice that the weather was much better on Saturday than on Friday? We hope everyone had time to catch up with old friends, made new friends, got together with your relatives! All our food booths sold all their food before the end of the Bon Dance. That is great! Wasn’t the food great and the prices great! We understand that some people were disappointed that certain food items were sold out and we apologize for that however part of the problem is manpower so for all those people who want to help, please let us know for next year! Thank you to everyone who came to our Bon Dance, especially those who came on Friday evening when it rained hard at one point. SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT YEAR! - 4. Page 4 Yagura Set Up Photos: Yagura set up is not that easy. It takes a lot of manpower to make sure each pole is secured correctly and to make sure the foundation is strong enough to hold the singers and taiko drummers. These photos below were from 2014. This year your photographer was busy in the kitchen and apologize for not taking photos. THANK YOU to everyone who did come to help on August 9, 2015. Magnet Sweeper is used to try and get as much of the nails from the O-Toba take down as possible so no one will get hurt dancing around the yagura. Mr. Shindo shows the magnet sweeper is strong enough to hold a cup full of nails! Thank You Message from Bon Dance Chairperson by Burt Lum A BIG Mahalo to all the hands that came together to make the 2015 Jodo Mission Bon Dance such an incredible celebration of life. Everyone who participated from the crew who setup the yagura, the food preparers, the dancers, the taiko drummers, the BBQers, the shave ice crew, the Kiwa- nis Club parking detail, the ono andagi, the awesome musicians, the lists goes on and on. Watching the Bon Dance unfold was a beautiful dance of harmony. As I watched the Bon Dance throughout the night I couldn't help but think how we join together as a community, from different ethnic backgrounds and different religious groundings to celebrate each other, our ancestors and our ohana. The Bon Dance is a mirror of our life. Thank you for being a part of this wonderful experience. Let it shine through you each and everyday. Let compassion rule and let's come together again in 2016 to cele- brate Obon!

One shore represents the world we are in, and the oth- er shore “Higan” represents Amida Buddha’s Pure Land. The river represents the bad mind we all possess. The concept is that we practice the teaching to reach the other shore across the river. We have two Higan seasons in a year. One in spring, the oth- er in autumn, as Higan is held during the week of the spring and autumn equinox. Shan Tao, one of the highest ranking priests of Jodo Buddhism in China said that the sun sets due west during the equinox thus it is a good opportunity to think about Bud- dha’s Pure Land which exists far away in the west, as well as appreciate our ances- tors who are also there. Please join us for our Higan-e service and think about Amida Buddha’s Pure Land and our ancestors. When the date of death occurs for a person listed on this record, the ministers pray for that individual dur- ing the morning service. The prayers will contin- ue each year for as long as Jodo Mission exists. Anyone can be included in it. You may put your own name on the list, too. This also helps when it is difficult to have memorial services. We also welcome you to attend the morning service at 8:30am. How to apply Stop by the office, and fill out the application form.
