It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

Jodo Mission of Hawaii Hanamaturi Service
Jodo Mission of Hawaii will have its Hanamatsuri Service on Sunday,
April 8, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. This service is to celebrate
Shakyamuni Buddha’s birthday. He was born on April 8,
566 B.C. in Nepal. His parents were King Suddohona and
Queen Maya. On that day it is said there were flowers
blooming, celestial birds singing and sweet gentle rain bath-
ing the baby Buddha. Part of this service is the display of a
Hanamido with a Baby Buddha statue in the middle (photo
at right). At the Hanamatsuri Service, each
person may pour sweet tea or amacha over
the Baby Buddha, just like when he was
born. There will be singing for this happy occasion.
After the Hanamatsuri Service, we will have games for
children and adults, i.e. Jan Ken Po (rock, paper, salt—there
are many ways to play this game) or matching memory game, etc. Adults and
children can play these games. There will be prizes and refreshments.
Please join us for this happy Hanamatsuri Service on Sunday, April 8, 2018
at 10:00 a.m.

less problem)! Please separate your
donations by categories (clothing,
kitchen utensils and dishes, toys,
trinkets, books) and please mark the
categories. Jodo Mission will not pick up your donations. Thank you for your understand-
ing.
Please note that what you may call “junk” may be another person’s “pot of gold”.
Any fruits or vegetables that you would like to share,
please bring them to the temple on Saturday, May 5.
Any plants that you would like to donate, please bring
them to the temple on Saturday, May 5.

IMPORTANT: If you see anything suspicious, please go to the
temple office and tell them what strange person or things you
saw. While visiting the temple, whether it is for a service or if you are visiting the Noko-
tsudo or Columbarium, etc., if you see any strange person(s), please go to the temple office
to report what or who you saw and where you saw the person or thing. This is very im-
portant! This is for the safety of everyone.
From time to time, there are a lot of people on the temple property: we have visitors
who come to the temple or people attending classes in the Social Hall or Ikoi Hall or up-
stairs above the Social Hall. We also have tenants in the back apartment building or con-
struction workers working on the renovations or repair people servicing equipment—
strangers may be scouting the place out whether by car, bicycle, motorcycle, or just walk-
ing or running. Please be aware of what’s happening around you and re-
port any suspicious people or things to the temple office! Thank you for
your cooperation.
JODO MISSION OF HAWAII
Youth Retreat
On Sunday, March 18, 2018, the Sunday Schools of
Haleiwa and Betsuin started the day with an early
service at the Betsuin, then went to the Honolulu Zoo
for an outing. Bishop Narashiba and Rev. Ezaki of
Haleiwa and other parents also went on this outing.
For some children, it was their first time. They had a
wonderful time and very educational. They had to
read some of the information. After
the outing, Bishop Narashiba said he was so
impressed with the Honolulu Zoo and how
clean it was and how it was not smelly at all
with all the animals. There was a huge tank of
koi fishes and in the center was an enclosed
tunnel of glass and net and when the children
stood up, they were right next to the giant koi
fishes. The Honolulu Zoo really has a lot of
new things that everyone should take the time
to visit! All Sunday School students and parents
had a wonderful time!

DEN DEN MUSHI PANEL THEATER GROUP
On March 4, 2018, we were treated to a wonderful performance by four students
from Shukutoku University Panel Theater of Chiba, Japan. The four students
were: Tomomi Kuroe, Kana Sukegawa, Saki Mizuno and
Yudai Takahashi. Their performances included music
from a few Disney films like Under the Sea from The Little
Mermaid and songs
from Aladdin and
Moana, etc. While here
at the Betsuin, they
were coached by Stuart
Nago. They visited the
Himawari Learning
Center and the preschool children just enjoyed
themselves. This year besides Oahu, they visited
Kauai and went to a couple of preschools and
care homes. Because time was limited, the Den
Den Mushi students were not able to enjoy
refreshments and visit with those who attended. THANK YOU DEN DEN MUSHI!
We look forward to your visit next year!! [More photos on page 6]

Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai
On February 25, 2018, Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai had their General
Membership meeting and New Year’s Party. Welcome addresses were given
by Bishop Yubun Narashiba and Kyodan President Jon Riki Karamatsu.
They both thanked the ladies for their many years of dedication to the temple
and that Fujinkai has always been there to assist the temple. Photo on right
was the floral arrangement made by Yukari Narashiba for the Fujinkai Service
and General Membership meeting.
After the ceremonial and business portions, the ladies moved to the Social
Hall for a wonderful New Year’s party with food prepared by the Fujinkai
ladies: chirashi sushi, sekihan, kuromame, nishime, shoyu chicken, stuffed pin-
wheels, baked salmon with imitation crab, namasu, vegetable salad, fruit salad,
and zenzai . Fujinkai is noted for their food and with everyone’s help such
wonderful dishes are produced (see right photos). Don’t they look so ono!
The Keiro women and supporters (all over 80 years old; oldest 97) were
honored with a container of sekihan (azuki beans with mochi rice) or happy
rice. These Keiro women
have worked hard for so
many years for our temple!
With all their aches and
pains, they still come to the
temple to help in whatever
way they can. Arigato
Gozaimasu!
Gail Masaki had a memory game of things having to do with “Girls Day”
and the winner who remembered the most was a Keiro person, Tomoko
Hisamoto who is 94. Everyone then played Bingo and went home with prizes
and food. It was a nice party! The only thing missing were more Fujinkai
members. Next year we hope to see more Fujinkai ladies!

What is “Perpetual Memorial
Service?” (Eitaikyo)
This record of a perpetual memorial service and
is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of
death occurs for a person listed on this record, the
ministers pray for that individual during the morn-
ing service. The prayers will continue each year for
as long as Jodo Mission exists.
Anyone can be included in it. You may put your
own name on the list, too. This also helps when it
is difficult to have memorial services. We also wel-
come you to attend the morning service at
9:30am.
How to apply
Stop by the office, and fill out the application
form. Each name costs $200. After the application
is accepted, the name will be listed on the record.
