Music Video Analysis
JESSIE J – NOBODY’S PERFECT
Music Video
Camerawork and Editing
In Nobody’s Perfect the video
portrays the fantasy movie Alice in
Wonderland (2010). The song was
released the following year
suggesting that the artist and
directors was inspired by the film.
The mid-shot around the table
represents characters in Alice in
Wonderland and their quirky attire
resembling characters at the tea
party.
Before the song starts there is a
voiceover to set the scene of the
music video to associate the song
with the story concept. As the
voiceover say “look into my eyes”
the artists looks directly into the
camera lens to make a close up. The
close up focuses on the artist centre
of the frame making the hallway
unfocused in the background.
Both these mid shots show the main
artist swinging back and forth from
reality to fantasy using jump shots
represent and distinguish real life and
imagination. The use of jumps cuts
illustrates the fictional universe that
Alice in Wonderland is set in.
The editing of the music video
made the following of the lyrics
hard to follow. This implied the
upbeat energy the artist has in
performing their music.
Jumping from different scenes
and setting keeps the audience
enticed into the video as there
is erratic changes from the hall
corridors to wonderland.
Camerawork and Editing
The camerawork appears to be shaking as if the video was filmed on a
handheld but that added to the impact on the audience as it links with
the Alice in Wonderland concept but this also captures the emotions the
artist’s lyrics that are trying to be expressed. Across the music video
there are many zooms mainly focussing on the artist but other zooms
helps the audience visualise the feel of being part of the music video.
However, the purpose of the shakiness of then camerawork fulfils the
song title being that the intent of the video was to emphasise the
nothing is perfect this is why the Alice in Wonderland theme was
appropriate for the video as the director has decided to go against the
conventions of music videos and decided against making another generic
music video with little effect on the audience.
The editing in the music video portrays the production values of the
music video. The video uses CGI effects in the video to bring fantasy to
life. An example of this is house and gates at the beginning of the video;
the gates and the house gives the impression that the house is haunted
making the Alice in Wonderland concept more realistic as it constructs
the idea that the video is mysterious and unpredictable.
Another example of CGI effects is the ‘aaaahh’ lyrics coming out of Jessie
J’s mouth at the tea party this resembles the caterpillar Absolem
character in the Alice and Wonderland.
Editing and Music
The performance elements of the music video showed lip syncing especially the hallway scenes
as this is where the scene acting is at its calmest and less flashy. The tea party is the main
narrative and the hallways were specifically for performance.
The music throughout the video is consistently upbeat but starts low then the pitch
progressively increases and stays the same pitch throughout until the clanging on bells which
breaks the instruments and vocals to emphasise the narrative of the video. Then the music
continues to have a consistent pitch till the end. The tempo of the song works well with the
video as the lyrics are sung fast which is conventional of music videos this suits the music video
well as the narrative is all about upbeat and being a dance anthem.
Mise-en-Scene
Costume – the costumes follow conventions of the typical music
videos of the pop genre. The colours and designs are bold and
striking to the audience. The designs of the costume makes the
artist look confident and sexualising to draw the audience’s
attention. The colour of the costumes such as black, cream, white,
red, blue and green conveys conventions as they are popular
colours amongst the majority of music videos. The colours white,
red and black in particularly play a part in the narrative
representing the queen of hearts, cards and the white queen
creating synergy amongst both film and music.
Lighting – the use of lighting starts dark and constructs a dingy
and creepy feel amongst the castle and the hallway making the
contrast between the Alice in Wonderland theme and the music.
At the bridge of the music video the lighting is high key as the
scene is filmed on scene in a studio this is evident in the
swimming in black ink and the other studio scenes filmed in a
black background.
