Abstract: IT Teams know the drill. New security bulletins, new issues, new patches to deploy. Schedule another maintenance operation and prepare for system downtime.
There is a better way to do things. Live patching has been around in the Linux Kernel for some time now, but adoption has not been ideal so far - either because of a lack of trust in the technology or just lack of awareness - or sysadmins just enjoy interrupting their workloads or users.
Live patching consists of two aspects. First, there has to be a mechanism for function redirection in the kernel. As in many things, the kernel actually provides three different subset of tools that provide this functionality - kprobes, fprobes and Livepatching. Secondly, Live Patching relies on a set of tools to generate the actual patches to deploy, replacing the old code with new one. This is arguably the most involved part: you need to fit your new code in the proper space, you can’t overwrite other unrelated code and you need to maintain compatibility with other functions. If you change your parameter list, for example, its game over - something will break in the worst possible way.
In this talk we’ll go over issues like Consistency model, patch generation, deployment mechanisms and identify situations that are ideal candidates for live patching instead of traditional patching operations.

Continuous delivery is a powerful concept, but hard to achieve. One of the challenges is automating the setup of environments and the deployment of the Java EE applications. We have looked at and used quite some tools like for instance Chef, Puppet, Vagrant and Nolio. All tools had one thing in common: we had never used them. Why should we invest time in mastering those tools? There is a perfect alternative in Jenkins, a tool most developers are familiar with. Besides the basic Jenkins buildserver capabilities it offers quite some useful plugins like the Build Pipeline plugin. To setup environments the popular Docker project is used. Docker allows you to create containers from any application. Only some knowledge is required for the setup of the containers. Snap CI enables software teams to do Continuous Delivery (CD). When practicing CD, the goal is to automate the deployment process and build software in such a way that it can be deployed to production any time. As a deployment tool, Snap CI cannot have downtime. If it did, our users would not be able to deploy their own software. We had to change Snap CI’s architecture to ensure zero-downtime and we chose to do blue-green deployments to achieve it. In this approach, we had to maintain two instances of our system: one active instance, and one inactive instance. Based on our experiences, we will share some tricks of the trade from the numerous challenges we faced such as: making the application aware of whether it was active or inactive, handling data migrations, and babysitting long-running jobs.

Tools for unit testing, building applications, analyzing software quality and planning release scopes are an essential aspect of modern software development. With GitHub and "pluggable" external services there are lots of options to move these aspects into "the Cloud". For open source projects this is a viable alternative to on-premise solutions. In this talk I will present and demonstrate the CI lifecycle of some of my recent projects hosted on GitHub where I tried to integrate modern tools (e.g. Gradle, npm, bower) and external services (e.g. Travis-CI, Code Climate, Coveralls, HuBoard, AmazonSNS, NMA). The benefits and limitations of those services will be honestly illuminated. I am not affiliated with any of the providers mentioned, so this talk will not end up as a marketing show! Instead, the audience is supposed go out of this talk with some new things to try out with their own GitHub projects while hopefully being able to avoid some of the ramp-up difficulties.

Snap CI enables software teams to do Continuous Delivery (CD). When practicing CD, the goal is to automate the deployment process and build software in such a way that it can be deployed to production any time. As a deployment tool, Snap CI cannot have downtime. If it did, our users would not be able to deploy their own software. We had to change Snap CI’s architecture to ensure zero-downtime and we chose to do blue-green deployments to achieve it. In this approach, we had to maintain two instances of our system: one active instance, and one inactive instance. Based on our experiences, we will share some tricks of the trade from the numerous challenges we faced such as: making the application aware of whether it was active or inactive, handling data migrations, and babysitting long-running jobs.

Tools for unit testing, building applications, analyzing software quality and planning release scopes are an essential aspect of modern software development. With GitHub and "pluggable" external services there are lots of options to move these aspects into "the Cloud". For open source projects this is a viable alternative to on-premise solutions. In this talk I will present and demonstrate the CI lifecycle of some of my recent projects hosted on GitHub where I tried to integrate modern tools (e.g. Gradle, npm, bower) and external services (e.g. Travis-CI, Code Climate, Coveralls, HuBoard, AmazonSNS, NMA). The benefits and limitations of those services will be honestly illuminated. I am not affiliated with any of the providers mentioned, so this talk will not end up as a marketing show! Instead, the audience is supposed go out of this talk with some new things to try out with their own GitHub projects while hopefully being able to avoid some of the ramp-up difficulties.

Write Powerful Javascript Modules To Make Your Apps DRY (Brian Leathem)
Large-scale Javascript applications benefit from a modular approach that let code be reused both within the application and across repeated implementations. In this session, we'll look at the modular approach used to build reusable Javascript modules in the Red Hat mobile field workforce management application (WFM) showcased in this year's Summit middleware keynote demo. Reusable modules for WFM are packaged as node package manager (npm) modules, providing a consistent format for both server and client sides using Node.js and Browserify. Modules are loosely coupled using the Mediator pattern and they broadcast user actions and state changes giving the application and other modules the opportunity to hook into those events. Additionally, visual components are packaged in a framework-agnostic manner, providing reusable UI components. You'll leave this session understanding the challenges faced when building reusable modules for large-scale applications, and the solutions employed in building out the reusable WFM modules.

Reactive Distributed Applications with Vert.x

Sorry, there is no free lunch—distributed applications are complex. You can embrace any trends such as microservices, but developing a distributed application is a challenge. Why? Distributed systems have many reasons to fail: technically they’re complicated, and the theory behind distributed systems is also complicated. Vert.x is a toolkit for building reactive distributed applications on top of the Java Virtual Machine in Java, JavaScript, Groovy, Ruby, or Ceylon. Vert.x does not hide the complexity of distributed applications; it lets you manage it. Vert.x applications are able to manage failures, can use several protocols and interaction styles, can handle heavy loads, and can cope with most of the requirements of modern applications.

A lot of functionality necessary for running in a microservices architecture have been built into Kubernetes; why would you re-invent the wheel with lots of complicated client-side libraries? Have you ever asked why you should use containers and what are the benefits for your application? This talk will present a microservices application that have been built using different Java platforms: WildFly Swarm and Vert.x. Then we will deploy this application in a Kubernetes cluster to present the advantages of containers for MSA (Microservices Architectures) and DevOps. The attendees will learn how to create, edit, build, deploy Java Microservices, and also how to perform service discovery, rolling updates, persistent volumes and much more. Finally we will fix a bug and see how a CI/CD Pipeline automates the process and reduces the deployment time.

It’s no news that containers represent a portable unit of deployment, and OpenStack has proven an ideal environment for running container workloads. However, where it usually becomes more complex is that many times an application is often built out of multiple containers. What’s more, setting up a cluster of container images can be fairly cumbersome because you need to make one container aware of another and expose intimate details that are required for them to communicate which is not trivial especially if they’re not on the same host.
These scenarios have instigated the demand for some kind of orchestrator. The list of container orchestrators is growing fairly fast. This session will compare the different orchestation projects out there - from Heat to Kubernetes to TOSCA - and help you choose the right tool for the job.
