DCSF 19 Microservices API: Routing Across Any Infrastructure

Microservice architectures can be difficult to implement. Specifically how to route to the a service correctly and ensure that traffic is spread across all instances of that service. What happens in a cloud environment where it is normal to lose and gain service instances as a part of daily operations? How do you configure something to be able to consistently route to your service when you don’t even know where your service is running!? At Docker, we developed our own highly available and automated API server on top of HAProxy with deep integration with Consul. Our API server acts as a service discovery and load balancing service to ensure availability in a highly dynamic environment. In addition to running such a complex application, we need to support thousands of requests per second while being able to monitor every request that comes through--that is no small feat!
In addition to running a highly available API server, we also recently migrated it from running natively on Ubuntu 14.04 to run all components inside of containers by using Kubernetes with Docker Enterprise. With the containerization journey came some benefits along with new challenges that were not foreseen.

DCSF 19 Modernizing Insurance with Docker Enterprise: The Physicians Mutual ...
Physicians Mutual, a 117-year-old Nebraska-based insurance company, had worked on modernizing its systems for over a decade. In such a complex industry, any IT refresh can seem like a never-ending journey. The existing application architecture made it difficult to scale or refresh applications individually. Everything was bundled, forcing the IT team to take a "one size fits all" approach that limited legacy modernization and business agility.
To "untie" the bundle and create a more agile and responsive environment, the IT team determined that containerization and Dev/Ops were the answer. In 2017, the company piloted a microservice architecture and an automated pipeline on Docker Engine (CE) to deliver the new corporate API. Following the successful pilot, the company relaunched 11 mission critical services on Docker Enterprise, paving the way for a complete transformation of the company's application architecture. CDK 2.0: Docker, Kubernetes, And OSE On Your Desk (Langdon White)
Scale changes everything. What once was quite adequate for enterprise messaging can't scale to support "Internet of Things". We need new protocols, patterns and architectures to support this new world. This session will start with basic introduction to the concept of Internet of Things. Next it will discuss general technical challenges involved with the concept and explain why it is becoming mainstream now. Now we’re ready to start talking about solutions. We will introduce some messaging patterns (like telemetry and command/control) and protocols (such as MQTT and AMQP) used in these scenarios. Write Powerful Javascript Modules To Make Your Apps DRY (Brian Leathem)
Large-scale Javascript applications benefit from a modular approach that let code be reused both within the application and across repeated implementations. In this session, we'll look at the modular approach used to build reusable Javascript modules in the Red Hat mobile field workforce management application (WFM) showcased in this year's Summit middleware keynote demo. Reusable modules for WFM are packaged as node package manager (npm) modules, providing a consistent format for both server and client sides using Node.js and Browserify. Modules are loosely coupled using the Mediator pattern and they broadcast user actions and state changes giving the application and other modules the opportunity to hook into those events. Additionally, visual components are packaged in a framework-agnostic manner, providing reusable UI components. You'll leave this session understanding the challenges faced when building reusable modules for large-scale applications, and the solutions employed in building out the reusable WFM modules.

This session explains how JBoss Data Grid (Infinispan) can be used as a high performance data storage and how to use Apache Spark analytics to avoid data silos.
When building microservices it’s a common practice to use a separate data store per service so that it can scale together with the service. Even if this scales better and enables individual release schedules per services it also leads to more data silos.

Delivering an app or service fast and frequently to production isn't the same as delivering the app or service fast and frequently to its intended users. Before an app is actually 'live' it has to run the gauntlet of production deployment that stands between it and real, live users. While DevOps has helped organizations make huge strides toward continuous delivery in dev and test environments, the production environment remains a very real obstacle in realizing continuous deployment. The biggest hurdle in that obstacle course is a narrow definition of DevOps that fails to include a broad set of technologies and tools outside the Dev and Ops domain. Sorry, there is no free lunch—distributed applications are complex. You can embrace any trends such as microservices, but developing a distributed application is a challenge. Why? Distributed systems have many reasons to fail: technically they’re complicated, and the theory behind distributed systems is also complicated. Vert.x is a toolkit for building reactive distributed applications on top of the Java Virtual Machine in Java, JavaScript, Groovy, Ruby, or Ceylon. Vert.x does not hide the complexity of distributed applications; it lets you manage it. Vert.x applications are able to manage failures, can use several protocols and interaction styles, can handle heavy loads, and can cope with most of the requirements of modern applications.
Microservices with Docker, Kubernetes, and Jenkins

A lot of functionality necessary for running in a microservices architecture have been built into Kubernetes; why would you re-invent the wheel with lots of complicated client-side libraries? Have you ever asked why you should use containers and what are the benefits for your application? This talk will present a microservices application that have been built using different Java platforms: WildFly Swarm and Vert.x. Then we will deploy this application in a Kubernetes cluster to present the advantages of containers for MSA (Microservices Architectures) and DevOps. The attendees will learn how to create, edit, build, deploy Java Microservices, and also how to perform service discovery, rolling updates, persistent volumes and much more. Finally we will fix a bug and see how a CI/CD Pipeline automates the process and reduces the deployment time.

Red Hat Software Collections, OpenShift and the Red Hat Container Development Kit open up many new possibilities for Python developers targeting Red Hat Enterprise Linux. At the same time, the wider Python ecosystem is undergoing two significant transitions - one being the ongoing migration from Python 2 to Python 3, and the other the shift to correctly validating HTTPS connections by default. Node.js is a very popular framework for developing asynchronous, event-driven, reactive applications. Red Hat JBoss Data Grid, an in-memory distributed database designed for fast access to large volumes of data and scalability, has recently gained compatibility with Node.js letting reactive applications use it as a persistence layer. Thanks to near caching, JBoss Data Grid offers excellent response times for data queried regularly, and its continuous remote event support means data can get pushed from the data grid to the Node.js application instead of having to wait for the data grid to serve it. In this session, we'll show how to build Node.js applications that use JBoss Data Grid as a persistence layer.

Businesses are speeding up development and automating operations to remain competitive and to get large organizations to scale. Project based monolithic application updates are replaced by product teams owning containerized microservices. This puts developers on call, responsible for pushing code to production, fixing it when it breaks, and managing the cost and security aspects of running their microservices. In this world operations skill-sets are either embedded in the microservices development teams, or building and operating API driven platforms. The platform automates stress testing, canary based deployment, penetration testing and enforces availability and security requirements. There are no meetings or tickets to file in the delivery process for updating a containerized microservice, which can happen many times a day, and takes seconds to complete. The role of site reliability engineering moves from firefighting and fixing outages to buiding tools for finding problems and routing those problems to the right developers. SREs manage the incident lifecycle for customer visible problems, and measure and publish availability metrics. This may sound futuristic but Werner Vogels described this as “You build it, you run it” in 2006.

Next, policy enforcement needs to integrate with developer workflows. Lastly, policies need to contain corrective action that is as close to the developer as possible. KubeLinter solves these problems by linting Kubernetes YAML files and Helm charts at the source: the developer.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
