OSGi components are called bundles and can be exported and imported by application bundles.
OSGi implementations like Apache Felix or Eclipse Equinox provide a runtime container which controls the lifecycle of bundles.
Even though OSGi is hardware independent, it is based on the Java Virtual Machine and as such extends the concepts of the underlying Java language.

Migrating a JSF-Based Web Application from Spring 3 to Java EE 7 and CDIMario-Leander Reimer
This talk is a detailed case study about the migration of a JSF-based web application from Spring 3 to Java EE 7 and CDI. It is presented at the JavaOne 2014 conference.
At first sight this didn’t seem to be too difficult. Both technologies are based on similar concepts and provide similar mechanisms for dependency injection (DI). So migrating pure annotation based bean wiring from Spring to CDI was obvious and straight forward.
But the deeper we looked into the source code the more Spring specific code we found with no direct and easy mapping in neither of JEE7, EJB3 or CDI available. Some of the problems and challenges we were confronted with were:
- How to migrate XML based bean wirings?
- How to migrate FactoryBeans?
- How to migrate AspectJ based AOP proxies?
- How to implement Spring profiles for environment based wiring?
- How to implement custom bean scopes?
- How to implement custom Spring XML schema notations and wiring?
- How to migrate code that is built against Spring APIs?
- How to migrate unit test based on Spring Test?
To answer these questions the talk will present the patterns and strategies used to map, transform and migrate the different concepts from Spring 3 to JEE7with CDI. The talk will discuss the changes and implications of the migration on the system’s architecture.

In the fall of 2010, Duke University Libraries launched the YBP ePreferred approval plan to actively increase the library’s eBook collection in support of the library’s current strategic plan Goal 2.1 to “increase access to digital scholarly content in all formats.” After experience with firm ordering eBooks from YBP and a series of changes to the library’s complex approval plan, Duke began adding a variety of scholarly eBooks to the library’s collection using the ePreferred approval plan. The pilot was assessed to determine if building the eBook collection via the approval plan meets the library’s needs. Cost implications, eBook use and feedback from librarians and patrons also played a role in assessing the effectiveness of the pilot. Providing access to these eBooks via the library’s catalog was a key challenge .

OSGi continues to take over the landscape of Java-based infrastructure products ranging from Integrated Development Environment (like Eclipse), Application servers to enterprise Java systems and now setting horizons at Cloud infrastructures.
In this talk we will see how and why OSGi matters for enterprise Java systems. As a dynamic module system, the session will show how OSGi allows developers to modularize applications to create truly reusable components for enterprise scale. Features like strong modularity, versioning support, declarative services, the run-time ability to add, remove & update modules to build server-side enterprise applications will be discussed.
The session will deep dive into what’s new in OSGi enterprise specifications and how persistence, transaction and dependency injection support like Blueprint Container services addresses Enterprise use cases. The session will illustrate how OSGi Remote Services coupled with SCA configuration services enables creation of distributed, federated service model for heterogeneous systems. Along with above enterprise specifications, specific implementations like Apache Aries will also be highlighted.
The talk will also brief how OSGi is poised to one of key technology for Cloud computing where software components and services can be deployed, managed, dynamically provisioned with enterprise security within cloud based computing infrastructures.

Based on Oracle Coherence the ODC departs from the trend set by most caching solutions by holding its data in a normalised form making it both memory efficient and easy to change. However it does this in a novel way that supports most arbitrary queries without the usual problems associated with distributed joins. The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

On the provider side, the BillingServiceImpl is another POJO implementing a Java interface for which a service is registered by the Blueprint container when the Billing bundle is started. By default beans are created with “singleton” scope which means only a single instance is created by the container. If the bean maintains any state then it can be declared with “prototype” scope so that the container creates a new instance each time it needs to inject the dependency into a client.
Here is a simple example of an eCommerce bundle which contains a “shop” bean which uses a BillingService provided by another bundle. The Blueprint container locates the Billing Service provider and injects it into the shop bean at runtime. OSGi services are dynamic so if the service provider can be changed then the blueprint container is able to dynamically rewire the reference to a new service without impacting the shop bean instance.

BP4 - Separate API from implementations BP5 - Share services not implementations BP6 – Make bundles loosely coupled & highly cohesive BP7 - Use Blueprint If you show the source code, the following three best practices can be included: BP1 - Use Import-Package instead of Require-Bundle BP2 - Avoid split packages BP3 - Version bundles and packages
