I've spent several years working in fully distributed agile teams and I've learned that the distributed setting highlights the need to get to the essence of agility. Having then spent time with co-located teams that profess to be agile I've found that applying the distributed mindset can help break the often in-grained and dysfunctional approaches that sometimes foster. So, what I may have thought of as being a limiting factor in distributed development before, I have now found to be an advantage. I think there are some interesting ideas that I can put forward. Learning outcomes would be: * how distributed agile techniques can be applicable in a co-located setting * how going distributed can be an effective way to address problems in a non-agile stagnating culture * there is a balance that can be reached after the initial switch to a distributed approach Part of the talk will be to present recipes that work well in a distributed setting and then explore why that's the case and then suggest how that might help the general case. The underlying theme here is that the more 'extreme' the setting the more important it is to get to the real essence of agility in order to succeed. By doing this we learn how to be more agile in general.

Background <背景>
A deadly earthquake and tsunami devastated northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011,
claiming some 16,000 precious lives and displacing over 300,000 people.
As residents banded together in an effort to rebuild the country, the Mainichi, one of
Japan's leading national newspapers, thought about how it could extend a helping hand to
the survivors.
The challenge was finding a way to help people in shelters after the disaster with no
Internet or television access, no electricity, and no mobile phone coverage.

3. Solution <解決策>
Our proposal was to deliver newspapers to the
survivors using conventional methods.
This may sound simple, but in reality, there was no
other way to reach the people in shelters: Technology
was of no use.
The Hope Newspaper: Special Edition was designed as
an interactive newspaper for people in the disaster
areas. Mainichi employees who visited shelters to
distribute the newspaper gathered the opinions of the
people there and compiled the information they wanted
into articles.
The newspaper was edited to reflect the perspective of
survivors, and designed with cheerful images. It was
highly praised by survivors as reflecting their true voice.

4. The Hope Newspaper Daily Edition <「希望新聞(日刊)」について>
At the time of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, the Mainichi established a Hope Newspaper
section in its daily newspapers to give people earthquake support information. A Hope Newspaper
section was also carried in daily papers after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami,
and contained similar support information. In contrast, The Hope Newspaper: Special Edition was
born as an independent newspaper that incorporated cheerful news and messages of support.
