Mission Statement
Pine Manor College prepares women for inclusive leadership and social
responsibility in their workplaces, families and communities. We pursue this
goal through: integration of an outcomes-based curriculum and co-curriculum
demonstrated by portfolio presentations; active, collaborative, applied liberal arts
learning; and college-wide mentoring teams and community partnerships–in an
environment that celebrates diversity and respects the common good.
History
Pine Manor College is a four-year liberal arts college for women, that also
offers a coeducational master’s program leading to a Master of Fine Arts
in Creative Writing. Originally established as a post-secondary division of
The Dana Hall School in Wellesley in 1911 by the late Helen Temple Cooke,
a pioneer dedicated to preparing women for successful lives, the College
offers Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. The College moved
to its tree-filled 60-acre Chestnut Hill campus in the mid-1960s. In recent
years, U.S. News & World Report has repeatedly cited Pine Manor College
as one of the most diverse private liberal arts colleges in the country. Today,
dedicated faculty and staff provide a collaborative, personalized, dynamic
learning environment, where students are involved in the excitement of
discovery, creativity, and problem-solving. Students acquire the analytical,
ethical, and interpersonal skills necessary for leadership and are provided
with guidance and mentoring networks to make sound choices about their
studies and careers.
Alane Karen Shanks, Ed.D.
On July 15, 2011, Alane K. Shanks became the tenth president
of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. Dr. Shanks has
over 25 years of experience at both private and public institutions of
higher education in the Boston area. Prior to assuming leadership
of Pine Manor, she served as Vice President for Administration and
Finance at Roxbury Community College, where she implemented a
multi-year strategic plan that placed the College on the strongest
financial and administrative footing in its history. Earlier, Dr. Shanks
served as Associate Dean for Educational Administration and Finances
at Harvard Medical School. She has also worked as a higher education
consultant serving clients such as Wheelock College and Yale University.
Dr. Shanks’ dissertation research was a program evaluation of 30
years of affirmative action in student recruiting and retention at Harvard
Medical School. Since receiving her doctorate, she has conducted a
research study on best practices in recruiting, retaining, and promoting
faculty of color in the training of health professionals. This scope of
experience demonstrates her proven commitment to promoting broad
access to high quality public and private education for all students.
As a member of the American Educational Research Association and
the New England Resource Center for Higher Education, Dr. Shanks has
published and presented a variety of papers. She earned her Doctorate
of Education from the University of Massachusetts Boston, her Master’s
in Management of Human Services from the Heller School at Brandeis
University, and her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the
University of California at Santa Barbara. She lives in Brookline, MA,
with her husband Jeremy Solomons and their two sons, Eli and Jared.

Presidential Medallion
The Presidential Medallion was donated to the College in 1956 for the
investiture of President Frederick C. Ferry, Jr., by Margaret Hobbs Traylor,
a trustee of the Dana Hall Schools (including Pine Manor) from 1949-1958 and
of Pine Manor Junior College from 1963-1968. Since 1956, it has been passed
from hand to hand at the inauguration of each new president as a formal symbol of
the continuity of Pine Manor’s history and of the responsibilities, privileges and
authority of the office of the President.

Helen Temple Cooke had little formal
education, no diplomas of any kind,
no college degrees, and no financial security
when she came from her home in Rutland, VT,
to Wellesley, MA, in 1894, at the age of
twenty-nine. More than fifty years later, when
she retired at the age of eighty-six, three
well-known schools were monuments to her
genius. (Tenacre Country Day School, Dana Hall
School, and Pine Manor.) Ten thousand young
women from every state in the nation and from
many foreign countries had attended one
or more of these institutions, which offered
educational opportunity from the primary grades
through the first two years of college. On her
ninetieth birthday, April 13, 1955, which she did
notlivetosee(shediedtheprecedingday),hundreds
of letters paid tribute to the high standards of
living and learning created in these three schools
and to the enduring gifts bequeathed to “her girls”
by a dedicated life.
