This scene is in the film because it gives us an insight on how Colter Stevens was
feeling before he died and how desperate he would have been to have one last
conversation with his father. The phone call may also represent the relationship
between Colter and his father before he passed away as they were not talking to each
other because of a disagreement between the two. This helps the thriller as it takes
the audience’s focus off the action of Colter/Sean finding the bomber and preventing
the bomber from causing this destruction taking place.
Representation in this Film
• How are different groups are represented in “Source Code”?
Men are shown to be the most important on screen as the only woman on the train who made
frequent appearances was Christina. Apart from her, it was only men who were made most of the
appearances when on the train. This could reflect the idea that what men say or do is more important
to the audience than anything which women may do
In Source Code, ethnic minorities are shown in some areas to have high positions within society as Dr
Rutledge who organised the entire mission as a top scientist and he is a black man. Also, there was a
man and a woman both of african-american ethnicity who are both dressed very smartly. This could
indicate that they are a part of middle class backgrounds.
Laura Mulvey
In Source Code, women are not presented to be passive as Sean Fentress’ girlfriend,
Christina is shown to be quite curious and eager to find out what he was up to
rather than just accepting his behaviour towards her. This can be seen within this
clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLB0qd3DyDc
She begins to question what Sean’s motives are while on the train but he prevents her
from any further questioning by kissing her at the end of the video. This can reflect
the idea of women being viewed as ‘objects of male erotic desire’.
