This document describes a role-play activity to help language learners develop sociolinguistic competence. In the role-play, a secretary and manager discuss the manager needing the secretary to stay late to help with a work project. Learners first predict the relationship and discussion, then perform the roles themselves. They then compare their discussion to a model conversation, analyzing differences in social relationships and linguistic forms between the languages. The goal is for learners to understand how social roles influence language use.
