Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891 while looking for an indoor game to keep his students occupied on a rainy day in gym class. He was born in 1861 in Ontario, Canada, had two wives and five children, and worked as a physical education professor. Naismith wrote the original 13 rules of basketball and the game has since become one of the most popular sports worldwide before he died in 1939 in Lawrence, Kansas at the age of 78 from a brain hemorrhage.
