Jamaica was originally inhabited by the Taino people, but their population declined due to disease and forced labor after the Spanish colonized the island in 1494 and established sugar plantations worked by African slaves. In 1655, the British took control of Jamaica from the Spanish and developed a profitable sugar industry relying on slave labor. Jamaica gained independence from Britain in 1962 and continues to face challenges while also making cultural contributions to music, sports, and cuisine.
