Jamaica is an island country located in the Caribbean Sea, approximately 500 miles south of the United States. The terrain is varied, with mountain ranges and low coastal plains, and the highest point is the Blue Mountain Peak at 7,388 feet. The climate is tropical, allowing for unique weather patterns.
The first inhabitants were the Arawak Indians, but they died out after European colonization in 1494 brought Spanish settlers and African slaves. Today, Jamaica has a population of over 2.6 million people, 90% of whom are of African or African mixed ancestry. The culture was influenced by African, Spanish, East Indian, and Chinese ethnic groups.
