Collins is pursuing a graduate degree in marketing communication at Franklin University. He was born in Nigeria to a Christian family and grew up in southern Nigeria. He received a private Catholic education in Nigeria and earned his bachelor's degree before working as a teacher and restaurant manager. Collins chose Franklin University's MCM program to become a top media professional. His family is very supportive of his graduate education goals. As an international student from Nigeria, climate and financial constraints may present challenges but Franklin University has a tradition of helping students succeed.
1. Personal Background
I was born to a Christian family of Chief and Mrs Mofunanya, a family
of 6 children. I hailed from the eastern part of Nigeria but grew up in
the southern part of Nigeria. The largest city in West Africa. Growing
up is not easy because, I was not born with a silver spoon.
I grew up in an environment where education and is a core
influence to my personal life. I am the 5th child of the family, last boy,
so I was shown much care and love, even though I am the stubborn
type. My family never relents in caring, loving, guiding and directing
me in my upbringing. In a short summary, I would say that my growing
up has been nurtured and nourished with culture, environment,
education and Christian value.
Educational Background
Education is an important tool in the growth of a child. I was given the
best education by my parent. I attended a catholic private primary
school, moved on to the secondary school which is a high school, also a
catholic private school. I graduated and got admitted into a federal
polytechnic school because I was too young for university.
Graduating, I worked for a while before I finally got admitted into
the university studying language and linguistics. Today I’m in Franklin
University pursuing my graduate study.
2. Professional Background
I don’t have much experience professionally. After my bachelor degree,
I did a year service to the nation, which is a prerequisite for my
country’s educational program. I worked as a teacher in a high school. I
also worked as a supervisor /manager in a quick service restaurant. I
left the job to pursue my dream in a broadcasting company. I worked
has a reporter until my move to America to pursue my graduate
education

3. Purpose of Graduate Education
Collins English dictionary defined education as the act or process of
imparting knowledge, especially at a school, college, or university:
education is my profession. Collins English dictionary also described it
as a particular kind of instruction or training: university education.
It is important to think of the future, pursuing a graduate program
is a thing I have always had a passion for. There are many personal
reasons a person or individual might pursue a graduate degree, there are
also common reasons too. I chose to pursue my graduate program
because of the following reasons:
Career opportunity, networking, increase in option and
professional prospect, improve in career, personal satisfaction, desired
professional field, experience, better job and salary scale etc.
Why I Chose MCM Program of Franklin University
Franklin University is rich in historical background of serving students
and helping them to achieve their aims and goals, even with their busy
schedule. The long standing of helping adult students that span more
than a hundred years has made them distinct. Its expansion to different
states and even outside the shores of American indicates the institution
mission and its student friendly approach. For this reason, the
institution has enrolled more than 300 international students.
Choosing the MCM program of the school has been my desire to
be a top media practitioner and earning a living as a media professional.
4. Franklin University gave me the platform where learning would be
easy and less stressful. The marketing and communicating department
of the school has produced great practitioners in the professional world,
who are holding the flag of the school higher. That exactly is my
motivation.
Personal Swot Analysis
Applying a swot analysis base on preparation and attributes shown to
be an important success factors in graduate education. For a person to
be successful in graduate education, there are some consideration to
would be undertaken.
I have many attributes, which are my strength, to be the important
success factor in my graduate education. A bachelor degree holder is
motivated to pursue a graduate program for much personal reason,
depending on their personal perspectives. I am motivated because it
would help me in getting a better paid job; it will give me a career
opportunity, increase my knowledge, achieve my set goals, and
network with like minds and people from other works of life etc.
Lovitts and Nelson (2002) reviewed a number of factors
impacting graduate student success by focusing particularly on why
student did not persist in the graduate program. Such factors are climate
and fit, types of financial support, bad program, faculty role etc. I could
deduce from these write up that the factor mentioned above is my
weakness in pursuing my graduate education. As an international
5. student, climate and weather condition, economic constrain are
personal problem, which is a weakness.
Bain (2004) understand that, student success comes majorly from
the classroom and from the professor communicating to the student that
they care about their research as they have an investment in them not
only as student but also human beings. This investment demonstrates to
the student that lecturers want the student to succeed and will do
everything to help. This shows a great opportunity for me, because
going through the success story of Franklin University, it has been a
tradition for all staff of the school to help student achieve their goals.
But in most cases, students are posing with the threat of external
forces. Ranging from inferiority complex, segregation on educational
quality and preference
Personal Environment
Personal environment such as family members, home setting,
community and neighborhood, workplace and country.
My family holds an important stand on my research. They believe
in the core values of education. Education is as important as food is
important to our health. Stephen j, Farina, Daniel Ness (2005, p 794)
describe family as a systems theory. Said in “family system theory, the
family is viewed as a sum of its parts; the family comprises of a full
unit, which consist of different parts, that is, different family members.
Family membership is an interdependent phenomenon. All family
members are in some way affected by what occurs to each person
6. member. That which affect one part of the whole, affect all”.
This best describe my family, we are in one accord. They believe
that when any of the family members obtain or gain a certificate,
everyone in the family has attains the standard. In view of this, my
home setting ensures each and every member of the family has a
degree certificate. Been educated is the key factor. Growing up in a
society, a child learns basic values, perceptions, wants and behaviors
from its community and neighborhood. I could categorize my
community and neighborhood as averagely influential community,
where education set the pace for each person. So growing up in such
community has impacted an educative lifestyle, which as enacted the
desire to gain more information and certificate.
In the UN report of the world population prospects, the 2012
revision predicts that Nigeria’s population is expected to surpass that
of the USA in 2050 and it would be the 3rd most populous by the end
of this century. With this indication, survival and sustenance all
depend on once knowledge and skill acquisition. For my tribe to be
acknowledged as the business oriented people, these needed been wide
knowledgeable in business matters, which could be increased mostly
through an education.
Personal Demography
As I have said earlier, my tribe/race is best described as the business
oriented people in the country, but I grew up in the southern part of
the country, where education means a lot. It’s the core value of the
geographical area. This has really motivated me and influences my
graduate education.
In my country, it’s a believe that graduate educational programs is
meant for elderly ones. But in recent years, there has been a change in
7. such belief.(Kotler and Armstrong 2014, p 74) explained in their book
“principle of marketing” the different groups of age grade. Through
their differentiations, I fall under the millennials. Technology has
been prominent in my graduate studies because its motivate, enable me
to learn and gain more experience in general perspective. Also
through the use of technology, I could be able to apply and received
admission to Franklin University from my country. I was
motivated in my place of work back in Nigeria. I looked up to some
exception individuals who are professional in media field. As a man, I
am required to work hard, strive in all aspect of life, in order to build a
family and provide for them.
Psychologically, I want to be esteem and recognized in the
society. Motive which is a need that is sufficiently pressing to direct
the person to seek satisfaction (Kotler and Armstrong 2014, p 149). I
have always been motivated to focus more on my education, to learn
and gain more knowledge and skills. My attitude towards my graduate
education has been eager and massive, with the believe that advancing
in my educational level will put me in a better position in life.
