Ivan IV, also known as Ivan the Terrible, was Russia's first Czar who ruled from 1533 until his death in 1584. He expanded Russian territory significantly. Ivan was a harsh and violent ruler who had thousands of nobles executed, taking their land and money. He established a personal kingdom separate from the lands ruled by nobles, exhibiting a desire to consolidate power. While Ivan expanded Russia's territory, his brutal actions against nobles and executions earned him his nickname "The Terrible".

for the nobles.

7. Execution of the boyars (nobles)
• Ivan hated the boyars (noble men).
• He personally killed 3,000 of them, took their
land and money.
• “Humiliate the ancient nobility and turn
them into men of service.”
